I wasn't trying to present it as fact but, rather, as opinion. I don't really think it's necessary to put "In my opinion" next to everything all the time. Some things are just too obviously opinion.
We don't KNOW anything for sure, so what's the point of making the distinction between something we KNOW (which is nothing) and something we're very sure about? Honestly, we're just getting into semantics now.
I'm not being super picky here. This isn't just a reason to nit pick. I simply feel that a lot of times we say things in a manner that SHOULD have "IMO" in front of it. It's like the saying goes "Once you say something so many times it becomes true" Hence why they say stuff over and over in advertising. But I digress. In my example I knew many people listening to the instructor were going to take what he said as fact because he did not say in my opinion. Why? Because he was the teacher. Students were going to take what he said and accept it. not all, but definitely some. when i made him admit that it was simply opinion he realized that what he said came off as if if was fact.
What you said may not be fact and even yourself may not feel it is fact but the fact of the matter is, you presented it as fact. how did that example relate? he was the instructor, people listen to him. Likewise, here your opinion is usually regarded with a little more weight than many of us so you are an influential power within the forum. So when somebody reads your post that you presented in the form of fact it could be misconstrued.
A lot of things are simply opinion and if you you get to the core everything could be regarded as opinion as you brought out. But I'm coming from a standpoint that fact does exist and there is a line between fact and opinion. So from that standpoint, that line should be drawn.

Right, so I'll just write "In my opinion:" before every single post I write here because you seem to think my ramblings have more weight than others'.
If you want to get technical, there's really no such thing as a fact. I can't present anything as a fact because facts don't exist. If someone chooses to believe what I say without doing any of their own research and simple takes my word at face value, that's their own fault. I don't think it's fair to heap blame on me for saying what I think. Others can choose to believe it or not. The fact of the matter is, I'm likely not swaying anyone's opinion here. Most people who don't believe what I say will continue not believing it. Most who do believe it will continue to do so.
You're putting way too much importance on one little post and, by doing so, are dragging this thread off-topic. If you really want to discuss the finer points of opinion and fact with me, do so via Personal Message. This is not the place for it.

That being said, can we please redirect the discussion back to the original topic: The Doomsday Predictions of 2012.
But damn ... I wish something WOULD happen. Some post-apoc world where you have to fight to survive just seems so appealing to me for some reason. Maybe it's something about living through what would be the most significant event in human history - that'd be cool.
I'm guessing some people are tired of the predictability of every day life on earth, and choose to believe in something uncertain and scary/exciting.
Personally, I don't think there is enough evidence to support a definite answer to whether the world will end or not, but it's very unlikely, so I choose to not worry. And if it happens, there's nothing I can do about it, so why waste my time worrying? :]
I think its basicly just another y2k but this time its y2k12 so there is no worries, except yah know the lochness monster will reveal itself, Big-foot will get a PHD and we will find robots on Mars, the usual.

I think people that are really into fantasy, video games and all that would find this type of thing appealing. I too would like something like that to happen, but only if i was the hero. Which would be unlikely. That is probably the key factor that would be missing, you wouldn't be the hero, but rather, the casualty. I think knowing something like this could happen is more appealing than it actually happening.
It would be like "Ok, cool...I killed some zombies. Can I go back to normal life now please?"

If you wish something would happen, your current life needs some improvement.
Well, I don't think anybody's life/world is nearly as cool as our favorite heroes from video games, movies, books, what have you. I think he was saying that the reality of things is so depressing and dull. I, personally am satisfied with life but when you watch a cool movie or play a cool game where the world is filled with all of this fantastic stuff you can't help but imagine how exciting it would be to live in a world like that. And this people, is why we have people that never stop playing wow. They hate their own life so much that a simple video game's virtual reality can trump their real one.

I'm a college student who has to keep a high GPA on spring break and isn't spending it at the beach. In all, this is the first week of non-stress in a while. Give a brotha' some leeway to think up something exciting.
Thanks for being 'that' person, though, Equinox. lmao
omg seriously you guys... the Mayans didnt predict that the world was going to end... its just when their calender ends...
annnnd apparently no one read what i said. i guess you guys really like to believe that the world will end. lol (or at least like to entertain the possibility)

Mostly because nobody cares to read what you said. We all know that it's all a bunch of speculation started by people on the internet. It's fun to speculate, though.

Am I supposed to feel sorry for you or something? Nobody made you go to college, nobody makes you keep the high GPA, nobody prevents you from spending on the beach.

It actually makes no difference what world you live in. New stuff gets old, fantasy becomes mundane, and your happiness is still defined by your disposition rather than anything else.
As an immigrant, I know this. USA seemed like paradise until like 2-3 years later.

I never asked you to feel sorry for me. I was more so wondering why you have to bring garbage like that into this thread.
This thread is about people talking about some supposed doomsday in 2012, and I go, "I wish xxxx would happen, it would be exciting." And then you come in with your intellectual bullshit and chime in something about people's life needing more if they wished for things to happen.
That's complete garbage and doesn't even relate to anything in this thread. It should be deleted for being off-topic, truthfully. And really, your latest post is off-topic as well.
ya i saw a purely scientific documentary on it in school a few years back and omfg jesus save us... its like a giant fucking bomb waiting to go off... O_O'
Volcanic hazards
The last full-scale eruption of the Yellowstone Supervolcano, the Lava Creek eruption which happened approximately 640,000 years ago[14], ejected approximately 240 cubic miles (1000 cubic kilometres) of rock and dust into the sky.[8]
Geologists are closely monitoring the rise and fall of the Yellowstone Plateau, which averages ?0.6 inches (about ?1.5 cm) yearly, as an indication of changes in magma chamber pressure.[15][16]
The upward movement of the Yellowstone caldera floor – almost 3 inches (7 centimeters) per year for the past three years – is more than three times greater than ever observed since such measurements began in 1923.[17] From mid-Summer 2004 through mid-Summer 2008, the land surface within the caldera has moved upwards, as much as 8 inches at the White Lake GPS station.[18] The U.S. Geological Survey, University of Utah and National Park Service scientists with the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory maintain that they "see no evidence that another such cataclysmic eruption will occur at Yellowstone in the foreseeable future. Recurrence intervals of these events are neither regular nor predictable

If there's one thing to take solace in it's the fact that we'll most likely have already passed on by time that thing blows.
What is it? I must now go google this thing. Sounds scary.

The galactic alignment is actually not at all a galactica alignment. It's actually something more like the Sun and Mercury and the Earth will line up or something like that. Nothing really all that big. It happens every X number of years.
They didn't really predict anything technically. It's just that the Mayan Calendar has these "stops" in that represent changes between different cycles. So yes, there is supposed to be a "change" but it's just representative of a change in eras. Whether it will manifest itself in some noticeable way or not is unknown (and very doubtful).
I think it is a big deal. It only happens every 26,000 years, when the sun and the earth align with the center of the galaxy.
If we are all going to die I am going to minimize Diablo 3 for a sec, come here and find this thread and necro the hell out of it with a "Looks like it was more than silly human superstition. See you guys in the next life. May we all play Diablo 3 in our eternal slumber"
