Does a subwoofer have to be one of those separately installed boxes? Cause my car's stereo has quite a bit of bass but it's all just the regular standard sound system that came with the car.
Hard to tell because, my stock RX7 came with a BOSE sub. If you mentioned what kind of car you drove, I could answer you better? But some stock systems have tons of base, without subs and only speakers... so I would say no, while other would argue. Technically If it wasn't designed specifically for Base, it is not a sub woofer.
It's tough to say tho because is the vehicle itself not an enclosure?
If I can give you one piece of advice....Unless you are rich, do not put too much base into your daily driver..... unless you want it to break down faster. Usually a single 10 or 12 inch sub is more than enough base to cause your vehicle extensive damage.
we just installed subs in my friends car, they were 2 12" jackhammers with a 1200watt jackhammer amp for $400(circuit city was having a going out of business sale) but you could get a bigger watt amp, but i dont know why you would need any bigger, we have to turn them way down cause they are just too loud
have a lot of friends that are into audio competitions.. one of them got their yukon stolen... 153.5 dbs..
but they are just gunna buy an escalade truck...
um.. if u need hlp with anything. feel free to pm me..Note.. car audio stores overprice EVERYTHINGGG

I have two 12" JL's with 2 10" JL's (seperate boxes both rubber surround)
1200W Rockford amp, w 800W Rockford amp
Stinger 1 farad cap.
I used to go 4x4 with all that shit in my jimmy...when it was cranked people could hear me coming on the trail for miles. Inside, you could set a cigarette on my dash and it would break in half... I'm sure I caused an avalanche or two :D, but since then they just sit in my closet collecting dust. All that base literally destroys so many things in your vehicle it's ridiculous.
I was thinking of throwing the 12's back in this summer and keeping the base down,.. Ill post up some pics soon...
Ever heard of a brand called MB Quart?? Not too shabby either.
There are very very few companies I will touch in the car audio world. I'm INSANELY picky.
Honestly, my front components are the only product Pheonix Gold makes that I would pay for at this point. The RSd65c's are damn good components for the money. The amp for them is a piece of shit Visonik but I already have it so I might as well use it.
Amp is an AudioQue 1200D.
Head Unit is a Kenwood eXcelon KDC-X692.
I need to design the box, but I'm not sure how I want to do it.
Well I was looking to replace my stock stereo with a new headunit but I don't know anything about car audio.. Any suggestions on a fairly cheap headunit?
Post pics. I want to see what you guys got if you got it.
I'm purchasing my gear now.

As for whether a sub needs a it's own box, no, they don't. Some subs are meant to work outside of a sub enclosure. These are known as free air subs.
There are many kinds of boxes, all with different strengths and weaknesses.

Actually, the best systems I've ever heard can hardly be heard from 20 feet away.
I'll have a single 12" Fi Q getting about 1000-1100 rms in a sealed enclosure for the best note transition.
While it won't be as loud as two 12" subs, it's going to sound a lot cleaner.
I can't afford to deaden the car at the moment, but hopefully in the future.

just make sure you do the install yourself! paying some unqualified jackass to break your car never suited me.
I can walk you through the process and even tell you what wires to connect, aside from getting a filler plate, the job is relatively easy.
If you can change a car battery, you can hook up a deck in one day no problem.
