This summer I'm going to be completely building my own computer for gaming purposes. I got to a State college here, and it doesn't cost a lot. I have a scholarship that covers tuition, as well as some grants. So each semester I pretty much get about 3k extra. (Surely that will go down each year, and I can't spend much of any as I'm MADE to put it my savings lol).
Anyway, when summers comes and I have a lot extra cash, I'm going to build my computer. I've compiled a list of selected parts I'm going to build it with.
I consider myself above average knowledge of building computers. I can build the computer no problem, but what I'm not good at is paying attention to all the fine details about the parts being compatible with each other before I buy them.
That's where you fine people come in. Below I'll list the parts I have, or am going to get, provided with a link to a page with specs.
Could you all please look over it and make sure everything is compatible/give me suggestions as to something better if there is (but I don't want to pay a fortune, mind you).
I'm buying the hard drive I'm buying because it comes in a bundle with Vista 64-bit for free. It's $190 for the hard drive and Vista. I could get them seperate, but that'd cost a lot more. But if I did I was thinking about the Western Digital 750GB HD.
I have no clue about that build as far as compatibility goes. But I know this one is good/cost effective. If you want my opinion: Go with this build. It will not cost too much more than yours... and is a sexy build for the mainstream market today... (also what I am using atm)
Processor: Intel E8400 or 8500 (these things are rock solid)
Mobo: GA-EP45-DS3R or Asus P5Q (both support the new 45NM tech, and are cost effective and well made)
Ram: Mushkin 4GB kit X 2 em2-6400
GPU: ATI 4800 series (4850 HD 512MB are cheap now)
HDD : Western Digital 640/750 GB (price and quality)
Optical drive : LG Super Multi Lightscribe drive (lightscribe owns) unless u need blue ray.
PSU : Corsiar HX 620W
Case: Antec 1200
This case will use the stock cooling, very sufficiently... trust me. If you follow any of this build go with the case! It is a monster, but it owns, best bang for buck gaming case I think, I am extremely satisfied with mine.
OS: Uhhh Vista 64 (SP2) I guess.... I have not experienced a major problem yet with yet.... I still don't like ANY OS I have encountered.
Btw I think there Is a similar thread to this somewhere....
OK sorry, I went back and checked my sales receipt and I got it for 169.99 brand new.
Compared to the case you selected, 100+15 for the fan.
So for an extra 55$ you are getting (in my opinion) a case that not only looks better, but a case that has been reviewed by many people to be on of the best cases available for that price. The same can be said for the parts in my list. (aside from how they look) but that really doesn't matter now does it?
In the end it's up to you but I recommend dishing out the extra 55$ for the Antec 1200, you won't be sorry you did, there is nothing wrong (that I know of) with the one you choose though. Just compare them side by side, the features everything, make your own decision, this is mostly all just speculation...come to your own conclusion and do what you think is right for you. This is just what I think.
k Lydeck you tell me how much you can spend and ill pick the best possible parts for you. iv built heaps of computers and spend a good hour at least reading about them.
*edit- also if ur building it around summer its a complete waste thinking about it now as heaps of stuff will change by then
Well, I'm not buying a PSU or GPU, since I already have ones right now. (Unless the system specs you pick out are too powerful for a 700w PSU, but try to keep it within that.)
I'm comfortable with spending about $600 on the rest of the system, not including the case.
also for a cpu cooler i would go with the thermaltake ultra-120 extreme as thats the best air cooler u can get. u would need to buy a fan as well, i suggest the sythe s-flex
Personally, I would look for a better motherboard and possibly a different processor. The Q6700 is a great processor, but there are other choices. I'd stay away from Asus, but that's just me.
Okay, so I bought 4 gigs of RAM but just found out it only works on nforce Mobos (SLI). Well, I guess I might get one of those, considering I've heard some decent things about them.
Memory is not made to chipset specifications therefore even SLI branded memory should work on any motherboard. As long as a board supports DDR2, it will support the memory you listed.
While not bad, I would not go with Asus. Their quality has been on the decline in recent years if you ask me.
Well, I put the memory in, and when I tried to boot the PC up nothing ever came up on the screen, and I waited for a while and rebooted, etc.
So I took one out and put one stick of my old RAM in (1gb)
I turn it on and it works fine. When I run a dx diag is says I have like 2046 ram, but the one chip is 1gb and the other is 2gb, so it should be three.
I dunno though. When I put my old ram in it worked, and when i had two new ones in it didn't, so something isn't working.
And on the back it says: "Interoperability with SLI-Ready nForce based motherboards.
I read something like it needs 1.8gz power and basic mobos only give 1.5 or something. I dunno. ~_~

Bolded parts I already have.

Motherboard: Intel D6451D Motherboard (Bundled with Processor)
RAM: 4GB OCZ SLI-Ready Dual Channel 4096 MB PC6400 DDR2 800Mhz
Graphics Card: Nvidea GeForce 8800 Ultra
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500 GB HD
Optical Drive: Sony DRU-V200 S/BR DVD/RW Drive, SATA
Power Supply: Game X Stream 700w
Case: NZXT Tempest ATX Mid-Tower Case
Extra Cooling: Aerocool Xtreme Trubine Black 120mm (1 or 2)
OS: Windows Vista 64-bit.

The case I have listed is somewhat the same, but without being $100 more.

I might also add, that it is far superior to the case you want in several ways. (Opinion/Fact)
link me to one in USD where I can buy it lol

Yeah I should have mentioned that too.... By then prices will fluctuate , A lot.
Thanks for pointing that out Num3n

well personally i dont like seagate drives as i just had one fail on me yesterday, literally...
other than thats its all good except for the motherboard, i really suggest going with asus say a board like this: http://ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=30418&vpn=P5Q%20Pro&manufacture=ASUS
also for a cpu cooler i would go with the thermaltake ultra-120 extreme as thats the best air cooler u can get. u would need to buy a fan as well, i suggest the sythe s-flex

Everything else is fine I suppose.

If you want to figure out exactly what to go with in terms of a psu, use these two links...

Is that a good mobo and cpu?
