Just wanted to get some feedback on what the public thinks of Dr. Michio Kaku? He has written a few books and made many appearances on many TV shows.
To me, this man is the reason I am still alive today, I think he is one of the most dedicated, intelligent individuals on the earth today, as well as a big part of the small group that I think is on the right track.....
Right now I believe the only thing hindering society and decreasing our chances of survival (attaining type 1) are religious people and/or politicians.
What do you think? Have you read any of his books? Seen him on TV? what's your opinion of him, and his viewpoints/beliefs?
well, i think that even when science manages to explain everything people will need some spiritual background to survive. As in an ethical code. Its been too often in history that people with knowledge and power started playing god. Thats the one thing i give to Christianity (even though i'm not a follower of any particular religion). The ethical code Jesus came up with and (supposedly) died for.
Science is the way to make life easier. But its also a way to end life pretty easily too. You need to reach a certain level of maturity (as a human - not the maturity thats needed to just survive) to be a responsible scientist.
Dr. Kaku stated " it almost appears as if our universe was fine tuned to support life"
If that is not evidence of god I don't know what is.
Maybe our God.. is nothing more than a superior alien being, with intelligence unconscionable by humans.
I truly believe that this is the generation that will decide if we as humans, fail and die out, or succeed to type 1 status, as do many physicists.
That being said, the transition is directly dependent on the cooperation of the majority of the planet, with religion out of the way, we are only left with the much larger task of convincing the world governments of our good intentions...
Isome say, why bother you are born and you die (welcome to life no one ever gets out alive) we wont see this transition happen in our lifetime so why bother.
I for one would like to see us reach type 1 by the year 2060, but with religion and government continuing on the crash course it's on, I am sorry to say that it does not look good, 50/50 shot we will make it... we are almost at the point of no return, the sooner the public realizes this, the sooner we will start to make some serious progress.
It is going to take an event of such cataclysmic proportions, to finally make everyone realize that science is the new religion, and must be pursued for us to survive the critical transition from type 0 to type 1 status.
I don't know. Whenever any dogma is made to rule a people (as evidenced in religions in the past, and now growing scientific dogma), people suffer. No idea should be suppressed, and no one with differing views from yours deserves to be belittled. But that's what will happen- I see it enough on these forums and others. People are becoming the same monsters that the staunch Catholics were in England hundreds of years ago. It's not until people realize that religion is just a facet of reality displayed in a different language that, I think, in my *opinion*, we will be able to move forward as a unified being, but still as individuals. It's our individuality that makes us different, and, in my *opinion*, human. For the most part.
In my opinion, it is completely wrong (atheism) but also completely necessary to save our hides.
At least with atheism though, progress of type 1 is not hindered it is in fact sped up.
The question is not whether a certain religion is correct, right or wrong but it is a question of (is this religion in fact doing anything positive to help us survive certain death, or is it pushing us deeper into the grave, by slowing the process of type 1 transition.)
right now the answer is obvious for those who are not oblivious to the facts ( the recent facts)
it is completely wrong (atheism) but also completely necessary to save our hides.
Save our hides from what? And how is a religion without morals going to save us? Atheism only sprouts another branch of fanatics.

What is progress of type 1 and why do we need that type of progress, specifically?

Certainly.

Revealed religion and atheism are the same thing in this respect. Neither of them will bring humans together, neither of them allow room for intelligence and wisdom.

All i am going to say is there have been discoveries within the last six months that are forcing us to re write every physics book on the planet. You seem to be far to ignorant on this subject, and since I don't feel like explaining it,(very, very long explanation is required) I will refer you to this man, if you really want to know...
Dr. Michio Kaku.
Whatever I have left unclear, this man will reveal to you.
I strongly suggest you research it a little, as I found him to be the most entertaining public speaker of all time.
Science leads to agnosticism at most, never to atheism...
If it's a very long explanation, why start this thread? You've got nothing to say.
Since you treat me this way, I suggest you read Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man + The Age of Reason. It may get you out of your warm physics bubble.
I just wanted to see that the general public thought of Dr. Kaku as most people do not even know who he is, I feel he not getting the recognition he deserves.
I enjoy reading your thoughts and opinions, especially regarding my hero.
I don't mind Dr. Kaku, he's a scientist and I respect them. I do, though, mind spreading of false ideas, such as "because the universe is <insert the newest scientific theory here>, God cannot exist". There are two positions that, I believe, an intelligent person can take:
1. Positive agnosticism. We don't know what's out there. Afterlife is probably not in the world's agenda. Let's make the most of our existence and not spoil that of others:
"Now that we know that the only thing on the other side of the sky is more sky, the idea of an afterlife has finally been slid into the history books alongside the rest of the quaint and forgotten religions. With heaven and hell gone we are faced with the necessity of making a heaven or hell right here. What with societies and metatechnology and allied disciplines we have come a long way and life on the civilized worlds is better than it was during the black days of superstition. But with the improving of here and now comes the stark realization that here and now is all we have. Each of us has only this one brief experience with the bright light of consciousness in that endless dark night of eternity and must make the most of it. Doing this means we must respect the existence of everyone else and the most criminal act imaginable is the terminating of one of these conscious existences." (James Bolivar DiGriz, The Stainless Steel Rat)
2. Deism. God(s)' existence can be derived logically. But God does not interfiere, hence we should work by ourselves, for ourselves. It can also be derived that human cooperation is intended judging from natural processes, and it leads to more success than human hostility/singularity aka survival-of-the-fittest mentality:
"My religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable superior spirit who reveals himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble minds. That deeply emotional conviction of the presence of a superior reasoning power, which is revealed in the incomprehensible universe, forms my idea of God." (Albert Einstein)
"We are made for cooperation, like feet, like hands, like eyelids, like the rows of the upper and lower teeth. To act against one another then is contrary to nature." (Marcus Aurelius Antoninus)
So far, I have yet to be presented with any other philosophy that makes the slightest sense and benefits humanity. Either of those two, if followed, would lead society in the right direction, and they allow enough room for people of varying beliefs and philosophies, rather than shutting a person into "do this, this, and that". With any belief or philosophy, you can't just forget about human nature.
Type 1, if we're talking about the same thing (maximum use of Earth's resources) is not anywhere near as important as media familiarity and human unity as one singular species.

Some useful background information can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Understanding_Media
Especially if you scroll down. What you need to understand is that he's not talking about mass media as much as he's talking about mediums of human interaction.

I found it pretty amazing.
The Age of Reason: Being an Investigation of True and Fabulous Theology
by Thomas Paine
Basically a deist manuscript. Philosophy of reasonable viewpoint and existence. Too bad most of us fail to follow half of it.
Both of these books are old, the second one is from colonial times. If you're not able to reframe and apply old knowledge to new situations, I suggest you don't touch them. Many people prefer things to be spelled out before them, but I want to see ideas as they have been developing, otherwise I can't see room for understanding.
Right then, let the reading commence, I thank your for sharing that information with me, as I am on a quest to attain as much knowledge as possible in hopes to one day be a part or the crowd that helps save out planet.
In the meantime, I would like to keep getting feedback on how the public feels about Michio Kaku, and his theories.
Yea, Dr Kaku is probably one of the greatest beings of all time, rivaling, in my oppinion at least, Steven Hawkings. And it's true, religion (I didn't say any specific religion, thus breaking no rules!) and terrorism and arrogance are three of the major problems this generation and possibly our children will have to face in achieving a Type One civilization.
Think about it though, once we reach Type One, achieving Type Two and Type Three will be so much easier...
(On a side note, I hate you. You have the greatest avatar ever. I rate it 25/10. Highest rating I've ever given.)
LinkX, I don't know, I mean, there's tons of people with religious convictions that never hurt anyone. I think you just mean extremists, and extremists of any sort are bad.

True, but you cannot ignore a major catastrophe.
When the world is ending I'm sure they will be all ears.
I guess everyone is not interested in accumulative knowledge and constant expansion though, until the time comes when you need to be.
Do you honestly feel that we are making progress, currently, or are we digging ourselves a deeper hole?>
It is up to us to change to the world, and our kids are the most important generation to ever live,
Without change we are in fact doomed, and I am sorry to say but right now, I think religion is only dragging us into and early grave.
In my opinion, it is completely wrong (atheism) but also completely necessary to save our hides.
