That doesn't mean you can't still get a good idea at least of what you would do. Me? I'd play racquetball, then go swimming.
no i meant whether or not youd go,
like you can talk it up and play mind games, but you dont actually know until presented with the reality of actually being chosen to go. it happens alot in the armed forces i hear.
and i get the feeling everytime i get in a plane to fly oversees, like ive been wanting to go, but it just hits me only when i plant my butt into the seat.

Hmm, it wouldn't be too hard to asses the cost/benefit analysis of going. I think probably the hardest factor to decide on would be with my personal life. Would my girlfriend come? Would she want to even go? Would I bring any family? What would I do with my existing job. School would be easy to put off on. My current job, just because I'm fortunate enough, I could probably tell my boss I'm quitting for six months and she'd still take me back after being gone for six months.
Like, a feeling of "I'm not sure what I'm getting in to now that I'm here" type deal? Regrets would be normal, or at least looking back, especially if you're isolating yourself to an island for six months.
By the way, did it say if you would be alone or not?
it feels kinda like waking up really really cold really really suddenly. to me at least.
in the army and such guys will sign up thinking its all 'hollywood' and they go through camp and get all chummy, but then when war comes around, its like im not ready for this sh*t...
it would suck to be alone. they give you a 3 bedroom house...i cant think of any reason for the other 2 than guests

I can't understand how the majority of people, unless they actually are making more than 100 grand every six months, can consider this a total waste of their time, which you would.
Well, just as you'll never understand programmers, who work much harder than most people who get 200k. You'll never understand people who go into tech and art fields instead of law and business.
i dont see how you guys are turning this into a bad thing.... i would take this job in an instant company or no. Sure it might end up like the shinning but probably not as the interwebz would be with me
I would take this, I have virtually no responsibilities right now and I dont think people would even notice if I went. Theyd just be like "since when did you get a tan?"
That being said. I'd probably get fired. I imagine they'd be looking for someone with that type of super happy personality for advertising, and a body they can take pictures of
go somewhere else where salaries are much lower (psychology, research, DoP, etc.)

Do you honestly see yourself doing that for 6 months?
Is spending 6 months away from my family, friends, home, and lifestyle worth 100K? Most certainly. I don't live in America or a European country or anything of that sort. I live in Lebanon, where making 20K a year makes you very VERY comfortable, with a very nice car, a home, and your kids in school/university. Of course, you will have to manage a bit (as do all people), but it generally makes you comfortable, even more s if your job has benefits. Now..making 5 times that some in half the time is just..wow. I'd certainly take the opportunity..more hastily so if I could take a friend, or just get internet or Diablo. I wonder how that would work (the entire blog writing thing and being all alone thing) since you need people to operate whatever mechanism there is to produce electricity and all that technical crap.
Bottom line, I'd take the opportunity in a heartbeat.

yikes... in canada you have got to make $60,000+ canadian to be comfortable... In British Columbia anyays
And besides, you're wrong anyway. I would go just for the six month vacation. The money they would pay me only makes it a viable option for me. In fact, they could offer to pay me just enough for me to break even by the end of it and I'd still like to go.
If you are willing to work hard, travel to or live in Alberta, have a strong back, and are somewhat intelligent, and are not afraid of a little nasty weather and hard work, my bro is looking for driller helpers....
average yearly pay ($86 000) first year ($100 000 + second year)
The oilfield is not for everyone, only the hard and strong need apply.
...OK... shrink is not the only psychology job out there... ok?

Why don't people just go programming, administration, or statistician? Those jobs are much nicer, safer, mentally-centered and pay just as much and more depending on your status...
I guess that is a good option, but for those of us who enjoy physical labor, laugh in the face of danger and are not particularly that well educated, there is always an available job at the rigs.
I couldn't imagine sitting at a desk or computer all day, everyday, I would lose my mind (or whatever part still remains anyway)
If you are interested though PM me with some info and I will see what I can do.

I feel the same way about the warriors I work with everyday, it may not be pretty, but right now oil and gas production are not slowing (sadly) and someone has to do it.
There really is no higher paying job for someone with only high school or less, out there in the world today. (discarding drug dealers, celebrities of course)
I once had a job doing inventory control for an aerospace company, I got fired for my constant , violent abuse of the technology (mainly the printer) I thought it was funny, but I guess the supervisor did not.
