I've noticed a lot of things over the years, in commercials, on building's walls, on my computer and out of people's mouths. "100 ways to please your man", "Are you happy with life", "do you need a career change?", "Is your life full of sin, maybe you should accept Christ into you life" and so on. Is it just me, but does everyone seriously think we're unhappy and dysfunctional? I mean come on, how many of us are really that fucked up and need help, 1%?... 10? Studies seem to show that most of us are going good, but why is this sort of publicity still around then?
To be honest, it's starting to piss me off.
To begin the discussion, I want to start with a simple question.
Do you think happiness is way too important in our society?

I like the life I lived, because I went from negative to positive.
You know very well who you are, don't let them hold you down, reach for the stars.
If you want to get down right philosophical, none of us are happy. Happy, sad, angry, or any of such terms expressing emotional feeling are loosely used. Here's what I mean. When you're happy, are you 100% happy? That is impossible. No one can be 100% happy, because to achieve that 100% of happiness, every single goddamn aspect of your life must be perfect. Most THINK they're happy, mainly because they're scratching the surface of that 100%..say 80% or something. We're never completely happy, sad, or any of these radical terms. That being said, happiness is important, more or less. The percentage of fucked up individuals exceeds 10%..actually..the percentage of people who AREN'T fucked up doesn't exceed 10%. Happiness is essential for such things as self esteem, morale, mood and such, that are bound to affect our lives one way or the other. Is it important for OUR life? Yes. Is our happiness important for other's lives? In a way, yes, since everything you do has SOME effect on other people. Ultimately however, everyone is selfish, and wants what's best for him/herself. Those ads hope to appeal to the part of the community whose self esteem level is low. Have you seen how many Self Help books there are out there? Have you seen how many websites there are to help you get a date, when all you need is a pair of balls and some nerve to go at it? That's it; people like to feed on other people's weaknesses and disabilities, in order to gain some financial, social, political, or whatever the fuck it is, benefit.
In a nutshell; yes it is.
Excuse the excess philosophy, it just interests me.

It's about perception. If your happy in your mind then you are happy. Emotion reason and senses are used to process knowledge and we determine what most of these mean by ourselves. They are relative terms that you decide, you cant put something like that into percents.
And to answer your question, no i do not think happiness is truly stressed. Maybe commercially but in terms of society the ideal life is spent working long hours to pay for the house that you dont live in, the vacation you never get and the car that drives you to work. Happiness has been obscured with the pursuit of materialism and the pursuit of happiness.
Most people are not happy at all.

Sure you can. Ever heard of "what you don't know can't hurt you" ? You think you're happy, you're happy, but in reality, you aren't. As long as you perceive yourself to be, however, you are. I'm talking on a more philosophical level..that goes over the conscious level of things. Your conscious state might be happy, but subconsciously, there's a chance that you're unhappy, or LESS happy.
I wouldn't say that happiness is too important in our society. I feel that most of the people out there are NOT happy, therefore it is a perfect marketing ploy to try and advertise something that "gives happiness", because since there are so many that aren't happy, they will listen and pursue that which is being told.
I personally am happy each and everyday of my life. No matter how much money I have, how many friends I have, or whether or not I have a good day. I don't care. I'm just glad to be alive and able to enjoy all the beauty that life offers.
Do you think happiness is way too important in our society?
Happiness is not important in our society. The most important thing is unhappiness, because only an unhappy person will fall for such advertisements as ones you described, and only unhappy people may be controlled. For further information, see NLP.

"You're gonna go far,
You're gonna fly high,
You're never gonna die,
You're gonna make it, if you try;
They're gonna love you."
"Come on you target for faraway laughter,
come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!"

I think a lot of those things you see are actually for products and services. Maybe we're unhappy. But what is happiness? How is it measured? Are you going to use Jimmy Carter's malaise standards, or base it off of income, or what?
I think individual happiness is important for me at least. If others are happy, then good for them. Collective happiness I'm not going to concern myself over too much because I think it is utterly subjective. And one society that claims to be unhappy, could arguably be way happier than some other society which is maybe poorer, or lacking in individual freedom.
But don't think of all this as just people telling you you're sad for the sake of it. There's usually an agenda behind it. Even if the media is telling you we are all sad, they are usually doing it for ratings or some other non-altruistic reason.

To find the truth, you must risk everything.
In a nutshell; yes it is.
