Only thing that is better is the processor, which means squat in gaming now, because it's all about the card. If you don't have dual HD4870's, you don't have bragging rights. Even when you DO have duals, 8800 GTX in SLI would rape them till kingdom come.
If I'm not wrong - and by wrong I mean misinformed by my dealer - there is a 512 HD 4870 and a 1024 one, right?
Regardless. The memory in the 8800GTX is bigger (even if ATI has better memory capabilities). Though the HD4870 can be better at higher resolutions, I'm at 1280x1024, so I'm in no need of that perk offered by the 4870. It might be better, but only slightly. I'll tell you something though.
Oblivion, 4870 actually performs worse in certain situations than an 8800 GTX. The reviewers didn't properly benchmark the card for this game. Ironically, in interiors the 8800 GTX runs faster than a 4870 during heavy combat, even when the 4870 is overclocked. The 8800 also beats Oblivion in cities. The 4870 leaves the 8800 GTX behind by a fair margin out in the wilderness, which makes me think the 4870 is simply optimized to renders grass and trees. The exterior performance of the 4870 lead me to believe the card was a monster for this game. Maybe the drivers suck, I just don't see how drivers are going to raise these minimum frames by the same degree they do out in the wilderness.
So you see, you're more than set to go with an 8800 GTX. When you go SLI or Crossfire, it really isn't that big of a difference, because not one game nowadays requires that kinda rig.
Oblivion isn't a great game to make the comparison with. Look at other benchmarks. The memory on an HD4870 molests the memory on an 8800GTX. While there might be less, it's insanely fast.
You're talking about something really slight here, really. It might be better at somethings, but not at everything. I'm on that resolution on CoD, btw.

Well then I pity the fool who has a 15 inch monitor.
And yes, remember we're talking about the 8800GTX and not the 9800GTX. The HD4850 is slightly better than the 9800GTX and the 9800GTX is slightly better than the 8800GTX.
Plus, the HD4850 is $60 cheaper than it. It's an obvious choice. And you said that it's better at somethings, it's only worse than the 8800GTX and 9800GTX at Knights of the Sea but it rapes the 9800GTX and 8800GTX at everything else.

And if you really like to pick out one game to do a benchmark, let's do Call of Juarez! I think the 4850 even beats the GTX 260 there.
Looking great no?
I got along fine with this one Philips.
I got the new fan in the mail and installed it.
Cable management looks like crap but trust me, it's perfect for airflow.
Video, RAM, Processor.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Dude, seriously, give me another joke. It's a difference not even worthy of mentioning. In most cases, the 8800 GTX is better.

Are you serious?
The HD4850 even beats the 9800GTX.
Check out these benchies, loads of games in them.

Even in Crysis the 9800GTX gets beat, and you save a nice $20-$30 with the 4850.
Unless you're on 1024x768, the 4850 wins.
