Think of the world like a game of monopoly mixed with a game of risk. The oil fields in Asia are like boardwalk and park place. Now in risk what do you do in order to take a high value area? You gain a foothold on an area near it and build your forces. Much like America has built its forces in Iraq and neighboring countries. In this game there are 3 major players, China, Russia, and the UN. China and Russia are the closest to Boardwalk. Leaving the UN in the cold. UN realizes that it must gain a foothold near Boardwalk in order to stand a chance at attaining it before Russian or China. Thus the Iraq war. The current situation with Russia and Georgia is just a move by Russia to take Boardwalk. This leaves us in a sticky situation. We either have to engage with Russia much sooner than we had planned or risk losing a valuable area.
you mean the US? the UN is just an IGO, has no need for oil, let alone land mass.
and speaking of the UN, if the UN had any sniff of the US oil-poaching, which they didnt, we can clearly say oil is at least 3rd on the list of priorities, it is on the list though. OPEC controls most oil prices and oil distribution. even if we invaded iraq, suadi arabia, and venezuela, we would not see any change, only have the world glaring at the US.
the real reason, the US claims that iraq was a threat, and due to the treaty agreements from operation desert storm uno, the US had the right to invade if and only if, there is a discovery of weapons of mass destruction, and disruption. meaning a direct threat to the US. the UN did not grant sanctions to take out sadam, first priority, so the US used its treaty agreement and declared that iraq had weapons. the UN inspector found none, the US found none, no one but sadam himself knows if there are actually weapons there. hes dead now because of the crimes against humanity he committed on his citizens.

the US wants russia to pull out. actually 'demanded' is the correct word.
By UN I meant US and all its backers. We wont benefit at the pump, I never said that. However the people selling it would benefit immensely. When they benifit the price of the dollar goes up and we are richer inturn.
There were no WMDs. They would have used them if they had them.

What happens when Russia refuses?
nothing.
the US and its allies might go to the UN to set sanctions and get everything right, or they could do the wait and see, or put trade sanctions up. various alternatives to conflict.

its always a delicate operation when human rights are in play too.
Nothing?
I'm all for that, but do you really think Russia would have invaded a free country without fully understanding and accepting the repercussions?
I hate to be a "glass is half empty" kinda guy, but things like this usually tend to go downhill.
the reason for Russia's invasion i posted a couple pages back; a BBC link.
but Russia fully knew the consequences of military action without UN approval against a sovereign state.
what do you think might happen?
The Kremlin is notorious for misinformation. It's not beyond them to lie to gain a foothold. Were talking about a leader who kills journalists that criticize him.
At worst, WW3 of course. At best, things work themselves out. I have doubt for the latter.:(.
