Well, Russia always used conflicts in former soviet republics for own purposes. And they did it in Georgia. The matter is that Osetia is a part of Georgia for the last 80 years. It was added to Georgia after it (Georgia) became part of Soviet Union. As it was mend before, many osetian people have been given Russian passports. It was done to justify future russian invasion to Georgia. Now russians can say that they defend their people from georgians. After proclaiming Kosovo independent, precedent was created. Now Osetia, Ajaria can say - we are independent too! Why not? If Kosovo can, so we do... Russia only plays on all these conflicts to weaken Georgia

230 years ago Osetia, which is now divaded into Nort Osetia and South Osetia, send an embassy to the imperior(tsar) of Russia, Ekaterina II. The embassy asked if Ossetia could be part of Russia and saved from hilinder raders. Ekaterina II agreed to protect that land as a part of own.
80 years ago the communist took control over old Russia Empire. The communist, follow the idea "how more efficiently control peolpe" (do you remember Cesar: divide and rule?), divided
Osetia in two regions. Two, becose there is a mountain ridge in the middle of Osetia.
South Part was given to Georgia.
17 years ago Geogria dicided to wipe of Osetians in south region and start war.
The Osetians were fighting well, but Georgia was bigger.
As 230 years ago Osetians came to Russians and asked for a help. After that the peacekeepers has came.
The history is repeating.
Yesterday the Osetians were fighting wery well, but Georgia was bigger, also it had an instructors and support from the USA. All together, they, once again, dicided to wipe not only Osetians, but peacekeepers too, becose they put obstacles in the way.
Now peacekeepers asked for help.
Russia is not attaking Georgia, Russia is trying to keep peace

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
Georgia is an independent state. And Osetia is a part of it. Idea with russian peacemakers is nothing more than fake. It's not a peaceful operation. It is a russian occupation garrison which controls russian interest in this region. As I mend before, idea with russian passports on a territory of another country is a dangerous speculation which leads to war. When Soviet Union broke up, it was decided in Belovejskaya Puscha by leaders of newly formed independent countries that borders will stay the same as it was during soviet times. So its not up to Russia to decide how borders of surrounding countries will change.

Read it carefully.
Only one thing I disagree with is that Georgian forces committed genocide. I suppose, it was "just" extermination of all who can move. The less eye-witnesses the harder to prove some facts.
No one of us really know the truth. But just think about: Russian reporters always were near military operations while reporters of CNN were in Tbilisy, far away from battlefront.

yea throwing a word like genocide around causes a lot of commotion, especially if used very loosely.
but if it does fall under the definition of genocide, then this is a case for the EU, NATO, and UN to handle.
heres a good article. i like how Putin describes 'genocide' thats an awfully big word being used quite liberally.
thats the closest to the truth i read in here from someone thats not from Russia.
i think that it is true that Russia did invade to protect South Ossetia. I also think its true that they didnt have to go too long (if they keep invading that is). But its still nothing i'm not used to see the military strong nations do. Hey, at least they're neighbors and they dont invade, say, Iraq just to stop them from selling oil to Europe in euro.
i think that it is true that Russia did invade to protect South Ossetia.
How would you explain the current invasions, and Russia's targeting of a pipeline? If Russia was protecting South Ossetia, they would have agreed on a ceasefire when it was proposed, and they wouldn't sign it later just to invade again!

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
Lets say they've been given the reason they needed to invade. And a genocide is reason enough.
The fact that, say, Kosovo was declared independent gave Ossetia the right to do so too. The Georgians attacked and tried to completely wipe them out. They bombed schools and hospitals. Thats when Russia attacked, and they're not kidding. I think thats what its all about. Showing how serious they can be.

Ah, but some sources say the Russians attacked first.

I doubt that the Ancient Macedonian Empire was Greek.
We all know that the Macedonian region was and it will always be Bulgarian.
You can say whatever you want, but it wont make it true. Its a historical fact that the Ancient Macedonian Empire was in the region that for thousands of years was (and still is in most of its parts - at least where the Empire started) Greek.
Also their names were Greek and have a complete meaning (even in modern greek language).
They may have conquered whats now Bulgaria, but it doesnt mean they're Bulgars. They just defeated these people.

The Putin is no longer the president. The main one is Medvedev, though Putin still has some power.
He's pulling the strings.
Update on the war: Georgia met Russia's demands, but they still bomb Georgia.
