Schools have just as much a right to teach the children Scientology as Christianity. Religion should be kept out of schools, period.
Schools don't really teach Christianity, they teach Evolution or Darwinism, you grow up always learning and hearing about evolution, it is soon embedded as what is true, even to those who believe otherwise. I had to stop analyze my beliefs because of growing up constantly hearing about Darwinism in school.
So if you don't want your kids to be taught Christianity keep them in the public school system.
If students hear Christian principles in school (rarely in my experience) it is due to the Teachers sharing personal beliefs, not them sharing required curriculum.
If you think religion should be kept out period, then maybe science or evolution should too, its pretty much a religion in and of itself.

In your narrow-minded, closed-boxed opinion, sure why not. I'm not saying that just Christianity needs to be taught. I'm saying everything needs to be- Buddhism, Transcendental Meditation, Taoism, New age, everything- all of it needs to be taught for truly open-minded people who make their own decisions.
Yep, anyone. Any idea. It should all be given equal value as a thought and ideal. At no point should anyone be coerced in to believing anything, but they should be taught all of it, and properly and without bias.
i have to disagree on one....Scientology...i know what they believe, i dont find it funny because of how outrageous it is, but because of its creator. Scientology is clearly just a religion designed for profit.

Which teachers are frequently sued for. "Oh, my God, what if my child learns something new in school? Wouldn't want that! Better sue the pants off the teacher so they learn their lesson and don't do their job!"

Yes, but as an idea it deserves equal representation, despite what decisions you personally have made on it. To skip out on any thought is to be biased against it, and in this day and age we can't afford that.

Equinox i understand your points about how you researched those things yourself but from the ages 3 to 9 there needs to be someone who hollds your hand through things.
Again, I do not mind guidance. I mind brainwashing. I mind forcing your belief on a new person. I mind imitation. I don't like it. Speaking of imitation.
I don't know what schools you guys went to but our school taught us transcendentalism, romanticism, realism, naturalism, evolution, Christianity, Buddhism, and everything else in Language Arts + Biology + teachers talking. I think the problem is that no parent teaches their kids that information, no matter what that information is and where it was aquired, is invaluable.
Quote from "Magistrate" »
You seem to be missing the point: BECAUSE THEY AREN'T ENCOURAGED TO LEARN ANYTHING ELSE! BECAUSE THEY ARE FORCED TO BELIEVE IT UNDER SCRUTINY OF FELLOW CLASSMATES, TEACHERS, AND ALL OF SOCIETY! BECAUSE IF THEY DON'T BELIEVE WHAT IS POPULAR TO THE PUBLIC, THEY ARE AUTOMATICALLY LABELED A RELIGIOUS ZEALOT OR PSYCHO!
There is nothing wrong with being a psycho, and that's what people should understand.
The best philosophy out there is Transcendentalism.

sigh...i didnt really think it was necessary evangelical flaw and corruption in bible based churches....
I dont think religion should be taught in the american school system along with evolution and be forced to read from propaganda history books. i think we should study in english, math, chemistry, art, and another language. but other stuff should be left out. and yes it would be nice to actually learn something, but i think that should be left up to college to mold those types of ideas.

Religion is a part of history, philosophy, and humanity. A person who doesn't know something about religion is highly uneducated. Evolution is a scientific theory, just as the theory of relativity and other things you learn in science. It should stay, it just shouldn't be like "it was 100% proven".
But the same kind of bias happens in college, and the bias is rooted in children in their youth and is unable to be removed afterwards. It all needs to be taught in youth.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly.

An impossibility. It would take hundreds and hundreds of hours to cover just the accepted religions. And the more rare tribal religions or even religions which are made up on the spot which number in the tens of thousands are all equally valid as Christianity.
And Umpa, stop pushing for evolution to be not taught in schools. Evolution is a scientifically backed model that, unless there really is a God that is purposely making it look like an illusion, is fact. Without this model, then whole fields of science like Biology collapse without a foundation or mechanism.
The laws of physics aren't 100% true, as they break down at the quantum level. Does that mean that physics at all should not be taught in schools? Come on

your missing the point, religion isn't taught because it is almost taboo in school, quantum physics...not so much.....religion and evolution live on the same plane of existence. They are like comic book characters. Evolution is Religions alter ego, teach both or teach none. dont half ass it

That's why AP classes are good... that's why good schools are SO FREAKING IMPORTANT. But fucking parents don't realize it. If you can't find a good school, homeschool. It's better than being brainwashed. I've been to a "bad" school once, I've been to CP classes, I've been to charter, I've been to schools where they have metal detectors and sell drugs. I know how they are diffferent.
It's bad that people agree with their existance, sit at one place, fear change, fear movement...
Obalobex, evolution is not a fact. Saying it is is equal to an evolutionary religion. It's a freaking THEORY.

ya, home school by a really good teacher would be beast, or even small groups of kids so that there is that interaction. besides the art program the level of exploration of education is why i like ap and ib and stuff. ib is international so it tends not to follow american standards as much

but it cant be in american schools, it simply cant. seperation of church and state.
Separation of church and state only covers the government, I.E. an established required church attendance like in Spain and religious dogma that used to be prevalent in the U.S. in its very early years. It does not ever suggest that religious ideas cannot be taught in schools.

Then make everyone go to school for more of their lives. Education is what separates us from animals. I'm sure no one would be apposed to a good thing like learning.
You should also take note of what I said earlier when I said "the basics of each area"- which I meant as the basics of each religious idea. Nearly every Third World religion is polytheistic, which can be accurately summed up in one class, or one quarter. Anything more than that that a student might want to know can be optional- like the specifics of said philosophies in the Third World religions specifically and not just in a general sense.

If you're not being forced to believe something, only forced to learn it, that is hardly a church affair. Homosexuality is a belief just like any religion and should be taught for open-mind purposes. If I build a church to worship Michael Jackson should homosexuality be removed from Washington or California's curriculum because it can be considered a violation of church and state? No, it's just an idea and theory, just like any other, that deserves being taught.
