I was there with you all at 5am CST watching the whole thing go down. Needless to say, I needed a change of pants. It was awesome. but after I woke up now, reality hit me. I have 2 shitty laptops and no desktop to upgrade. So that leaves me to build a new PC. I'm guessing someone out there who has seen the gameplay vid (which was so righteous btw) knows a little bit about graphics. I want to keep this a budget PC, because I'm still a college student, but at the moment I am working full time and can afford the parts.
So, what do you think I should shoot for, in regards to specs? I don't want to skimp on this! It must play 100% on highest settings!
What do you think? This is a fair price to me. But is it overkill? Not too much overkill? Again, I don't want to skimp on this, the best game of all time.
Thanks! Sorry if I seem to ramble a bit, I'm still a little jittery from the announcement.

Diablo 3 PC (Built and ready to rock!)
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit
Proc: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8500 @ 3.16GHz; Overclocked~3.8GHz
RAM: 8 GB G.SKILL (4x2 GB)
GPU: EVGA Core 260 (896 mb)
Well considering D3 isn't going to be cutting-edge graphics, I'd say 4GB Ram and Quad Core are DEFINITELY overkill. However, I'm not going to say don't get it because simply put, buying anything less at this point is a waste.
I would wait on it, let the prices of Quad Core normalize as it becomes the adopted norm for new PC's and then buy a higher-end one as we approach the beta of Diablo III. 4GB ram is overkill, and can only work if you're going to go Vista 64 bit, but then again you won't ever have memory issues. I think 3GB with even Vista is fine.
As for video card, I would wait on it. AMD is coming out with efficient cards that are looking to reverse the growing trend of making video cards bigger, hotter and more power-consuming. I think you'll find in the coming generations of video cards, efficiency will increase dramaticaly along with graphic-computing power.
I have an AMD Athlon 5600+ Dual Core with 2 Gigs RAM and 8800GTX MSI Nvidia card. I'm sure I'll run the game on pretty much max settings. I'm wondering if they will make widescreen resolutions native, because if they don't, my 47" LCD is gonna have to be retired when it comes out.

Good thing I don't take your tips on buying hardware. Shame you spent all that time giving advice that you wouldn't necessarily follow yourself.

The Barbarian is from Arreat, a very cold snowy mountain top, but they are much tougher than normal humans, so they don't need warmth.

Where are Barbarians originally from? Sumeria, or more specifically Mesopotamia, AKA Europe. Think the Alps and the Pyrenees
Sighs. Wait until D3 is released, a cheap PC then will run it fine.
True.. Thanks for the feedback. I thought this too. Now all that's left is to save up.

if you really must build your pc NOW then go for the 8800gt you have in your cart, best bang for ur buck imo, and cant go wrong with evga graphics.. also, you wont need quad core for d3, but with the new 45nm core 2 quads priced at $260, i'd shoot for one of those (not the old 65nm you have in your cart). for ram, get some modest ddr2 ram, 2x1GB sticks should be plenty, i recommend corsair's xms2. for a hdd, as long as its sata and something over 7200rmp your fine. the psu you're lookin at is a big pricey, you can get a 650watt BFG psu for $44, or better yet, here is a different coolermaster 650watt for $80 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171014. The case you choose it really up to you, just make sure you really like it, because you're gonna be using it everytime you rebuild your system.
If you're getting a PC for Diablo 3, do not get a PC yet, it would be stupid.
Regarding whoever said you can't go wrong with eVGA, that's pretty dumb to say. They are among the cheapest in quality and hence in price, which means the highestly likelyhood of something going wrong. After about 6-12 months of use I think it was, a video card I had had a cap blow on it, and since eVGA had like a short ass warrenty, it couldn't be replaced.
8800GT is one of the best buys right now. But it would be stupid to assume it could run Diablo 3 at high settings, especially if you consider high settings to be high resolution (above 1.5MegaPixels) with high anti-ailiasing, in which I would guarentee it would not be smooth.
CPU will probably not be too important considering it's a 3D game which emphisizes graphics, and doesn't have to deal too much with physics or ridiculously large armies. So any good deal now would probably be adequate (like the intel E8400).
Quad cores are overrated right now because they can't make use of 4 cores well, as opposed to dual cored CPUs. Dual core CPUs for now have much faster processing power, making them excellent. I suppose down the line quads will slip past them though, but eehh...
ya not even all programs can use dual cores yet, so in quad cores, the other cores just sit there, and maybe do something not related to the task your doing
you will be able to get much cheaper ram sticks and they will still work fine
they'll work fine but typically their cas latency will be higher... and their timing slower... but i found a bitchin deal for ya :P: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145184 Same speed, same timing, same cas latency plus corsair is way more reliable. ($50+ off with rebates)
I also forgot to add that you have everything for your build... except a monitor. what use is a desktop without a monitor? Get a glossy screen if you live in a cave, or keep your comp in a dark place, because they make the colors really pop out and shine. otherwise, i recommend a samsung.

you're obviously don't know what you're saying, EVGA is on of the top card manufacturers, along with BFG and XFX. Yeah they're so shitty, that why they won so many customer choice awards right? and saying that a CPU wont matter because a 3D game emphasizes graphics shows that you know nothing about how the GPU and CPU communicate. If they keep the graphics the way they showed them at WWI then a 8800GT would perform very smoothly.
Intel 2140 + Arctic Freezing Pro 7 overclocked to 3.2GHz $70
Gigabyte DS3L $90
8800GT 512 $100
2GB G.SKILL $35
If you want to spend more on anything, CPU is most important. Get the E7200 or something.
Intel has been leading AMD for a while, perhaps due to some shady strategies, but AMD is back now with some great CPUs and the new ATI 4850 and 4870 cards that outperform nvidia's comparable models.
As was said wait for prices to drop even more. However if you wanna buy the PC now get at least 3gb of Ram and an Intel Dual core processor. Also at lesat a geforce 8800 GT with 512MB of ram :).
Don't buy an 8800GT unless it's like $150 or so. I don't know if Nvidia dropped the price on them like they did their 9800s, but it doesn't seem that way by current prices. You can get 9800GTXs and ATI's 4850 for around two hundred with the 4850 offering slightly better performance (I'd definitely recommend saving up an extra wad of cash for the 4850 if you were thinking of the 8800GT) . If you're buying now then I'd recommend an X38 board if you can afford it or a cheap P35 if you're on a more strict budget. If you want to SLI eventually then the 750i would be the chipset to go for. Of course you have plenty of time until D3, so you could just wait and see what technology has birthed by then.
Good thing I don't take your tips on buying hardware. Shame you spent all that time giving advice that you wouldn't necessarily follow yourself.
A little rude, no?
Firstly, the OP states he has a PC configured for approximately $900.00 which at the time of Diablo 3' release will be more than enough to buy 3GB of RAM as well as a Quad Core and a decent video card. When I bought my system, Quad Core wasn't out and the 8800GTX was the best card on the market. That's why my now almost 2-year old computer is going to still run Diablo 3 on max settings in 2-3 years' time.
Secondly, sure you can buy a cheap computer in 2-3 years that will likely be better than top of the line today but if you spend a little more, you can get a lot more bang for your buck and increase the longevity of your computer.
I appreciate all the comments everyone. I've chosen to wait and am setting up a plan with my bank to put away $100 a month into savings. By the time the game is out, I should have enough to build an awesome computer for D3.
I'm going to wait for now.

AMD Phenom is recommended.
Nvidia 8500GT. Even a 7600 GT can run it i bet.
Nvidia 9000 Series is better.
2GB of ram.
3GB if you want to.
I doubt its going to require more then 2GB.
Obviously some memory.
Those are the specs that D3 will most rely on,
OH and get a decent motherboard.
