I really feel like talking about Elfen Lied lol. Not the famous guy on the forums with the most posts, but the anime that he got his name from. A while ago when I wasn't posting on the forums, I would always read 'Elfen Lied' on the top right corner of the front page and wonder what it meant. So I googled it, found the anime, and watched the first fewish episodes (about half). I don't know why I didn't keep watching the rest, just got distracted, I suppose.
But, I really liked it. Its really cool, and mighty gory. And the vectors are really cool. I really just wanna hear someone rant about it lol, preferable Elfen himself, since he's such a fan.
I love the theme song too, especially the crescendo around 0:51.
Actually, this is a pretty good rant about it (from Wiki):
In the comments made by director Mamoru Kanbe on the Elfen Lied website, he intended for the anime to question and discuss values based on the way in which humans divide each other by difference, as well as the belief that atrocities such as those committed by Lucy in the series are strongly influenced by the way in which people are treated by their fellow beings. The series frequently discusses the events and treatment which define the human character in such a way, and the problems which arise from discrimination, as well as the wild contrasts between compassion and vengeance between fellow humans, through the strong vengeance of Lucy compared with her past memory of Kohta. Many of the themes are mentioned at the teasers at the ends of episodes in the series.
The first seven minutes of the first episode are known to be some of the most provocative of anime, containing nudity and strong graphic violence.
Themes such as genocide and the attempts to "purify" the earth from each other also appear in the anime between diclonii and humans. Both species feel the need to populate the earth with their own species and wipe each other out. Kanbe quoted this in relation to the desire of humans to cast each other out and segregate each other.[18]
Throughout the series, there is a great deal of nudity, blood and gore, extreme graphic violence as well as psychologicalviolence. One of the most prevalent motifs of the series is the humanity of the diclonius, especially contrasted against the inhumanity of ordinary people. One reviewer described the series as "devoted to quite a few of the darker, more callous factors of human nature".[15] Throughout the series there are various incidences of human sadism, casual beatings, cruel experimentation, and outright killing.
Unlike other anime which distinctively fall into a specific subcategory, Elfen Lied does not fall under any specific genre, containing elements of horror, comedy, drama, romance, action, science-fiction, and suspense. A majority of the episodes contain graphic amounts of violence and gruesome deaths. There is also a lot of female nudity and serious thematic material such as child rape and torture. The series also sometimes has strong language; the word "fuck" is used several times throughout in the English localization. Compared to the other anime of its time, the series is very radical, bold and daring in terms of its plot and content. The series juxtaposes many different tones and genres and was described by a reviewer as "mixing insane amounts of violence with a heavy dose of 'ultra-cuteness.'"[19] The series balances its darker themes with romantic sub-plots as well as many comic moments. Elfen Lied has been described as similar to, or borrowing elements from Chobits, 3x3 Eyes[8] and Gunslinger Girl.[19]

As I have stated multiple times, I've used this name longer than I've known about this series.
I read the poem from which the series derives it's name before I knew about Elfen Lied the series. (The poem appears in the manga but not the anime). Elfen Lied translates to Elf Song. The poem is about an Elf.
Now to discuss this awesome series, first I'll just say I'm rather sick of trying to defend this series from the people who seem to think it's Hentai, just because it has nudity. IT ISN'T HENTAI IT"S ECCHI.
The best and possibly easiest way to distinguish between the two is Hentai will always be porn, just in cartoon form. If you see a penis, and not just a "light up" genital area, you are watching Hentai (porn), Bible Black or Night Shift nurse for example. Elfen Lied is more like Berserk, or Ninja Scroll, nudity but not really over sexually explicit scenes.
Ok that's that out of the way.
Not really sure how it was I learned of this series, probably something like typing in "most violent anime" into google and seeing which ones come up the most (Elfen Lied, Berserk, Hellsing). I do not regret that decision.
The series is great despite is short length, 13 episodes, which is quite sad as the manga goes on a lot further and would push it to about 26 episodes. I think they cancelled it or something, like they did with Berserk (One episode short of the end of the series/season).
This series definitely has it's fair share of gore and violence but it's philosphical stuff is good too, and the odd few references to the Elfen Lied poem. A sub-class of Diclonii, the ones that cannot reproduce, and instead pass on the virus through their vectors, are called Silpelits. Silpelit is a character from the poem.

The best scene is the one where that chick gets cut to peices, and im not just saying that becaus it was gory but because of the character interaction following the dismemberment.
Gukuk! Gukuk!
At night in the village the watchman cried "Eleven!" A very small elf was asleep in the wood - just at eleven! - And he thinks that the nightingale must have called him by name from the valley, or Silpelit might have sent for him. So the elf rubs his eyes, comes out of his snail-shell house, and is like a drunken man, his nap was not finished; and he hobbles down, tip tap, through the hazel wood into the valley, slips right up to the wall; there sits the glow-worm, light on light. "What are those bright windows? There must be a wedding inside; the little people are sitting at the feast, and fooling around in the ballroom. So I'll just take a peep in!" Shame! he hits his head on hard stone! Well, elf, had enough, have you? Cuckoo! Cuckoo!

It doesn't say what kind of "elf' he is, but in german folk lore you have lots of little evil sprites people are always bashing so the little bastards don't cast spells on them. Gremlins, Kobolds and err whatever that other one is.

Elfen Lied is one of my favorite anime of all time which incorporates a perfect blend of horror, action, romance, and psychological aspects and if you are fan of Elfen Lied.

Fuck you, I'm a dragon.
wow, I'm surprised that its not where you got your name from though.
but now I have to look up this poem...
