DBZ is stupid. All that getting stronger and going super saiyan or whatever is completely retarded. Not to mention, the characters look stupid on top of the completely ridiculous flying around shooting beams all over the place... blech.
On a a more positive note:
Ergo Proxy has incredible animation but seeing as how I'm only a half of an episode into the series, I cant comment on the story. Visually, it is very appealing.
Death Note has great animation as well. I'm 6 episodes into the series (out of 37) and I can honestly say that it is by far the best anime I've ever watched. The story is amazing, the character design is appealing due to it being based on realism instead of the super tall spikey hair (DBZ) and giant eyes (DBZ as well). VERY VERY GOOD. It's smart and I really enjoy it. If you haven't seen it. Check it out. You will NOT be disappointed.
I watched the first half of the first episode of Samurai Champloo and enjoyed it, although not as much as Death Note. I'll continue to check out the series.
As for others, I haven't had a ton of time to check them out.
DBZ was a kid show, and as a kid show it was the greatest. kids dont want to see new ideas, they just wanna see super siayan lvl 123456789. They wanna see goku save the earth and beat the seemingly unbeatable boss character. As for Death Note, its good but i dont like the ending, and if I had a little less respect for you I would spoil it. Have you never enjoyed DBZ?

The first time I ever saw it, I immediately decided it was stupid. Nothing has made me feel like it should be in any other category than stupid.
I appreciated DBZ mostly for the reason that I enjoy linear storylines. It happened completely by accident that I would start watching Goku summon his Spirit Bomb to attack Frieza. And I'm like, "God this is dumb. Yet....I'm strangely curious if this attack is gonna work." So I'd watch it the next day to see if it did work. Unfortunately, the show is actually so slow paced that little ground is actually covered in each episode. There would be like 2 minutes of fighting and 20 minutes of trash talking. But for some reason I just started tuning in each day to watch it cause I really wanted to see how it would all end.

The reason I decided to dislike it was because they never really ended anything, it just kept going and going until it got old. It was my very first anime as a kid, unless you count Sailor Moon (which I only liked because of the long legged girls). I recently tried to watch both of those series over again and just couldn't....

I recently watched the first season of Bleach and that was pretty good. Bummer that it left you hangin at the end though.
