What the hell is up with all the anime fans here? I mean, it's pretty childish unless your watching hentai porn (god forbid). Seriously, what the hell? Shoot me for this, but, go grow up or give me a good reason why as adults and old teenagers you should still be fans of anime.
Well I detest anime also, I know my avatar is anime, but the game makes up for it. Anyway, the only thing I don't like about anime is how their tv shows and comics go on and on, the story starts off great, but it keeps going. And plus some of the people in it are way too powerful, it's just overkill.
The game my avatar is from is not like that whatsoever, so it's all good.
Its so funny how teenagers at my school are obsessive with Japanese culture and anime.
All those anime kiddie shows on TV, all there manga drawing, all thei weird ass har styles and clothes. So stupid.
And its all horribly voiced over by americans.
Watch a Arnold Schwarzenegger film in Germany and laugh as his voice is replaced by a whimpy duetchman.
Same thing for these animes, they laugh at american versions.
Cus they know what were missing out on.
You grew up in USA.
If you like anime and japanese stuff so much just move there, thats what I tell them.
I'm in my mid-twenties and I would say I'm a moderate fan of anime. I've often said this of anime, but while the majority of it is brainless garbage, the rest of it tends to be exceptionally good. I suppose it partly depends on what your tastes are, but it also helps when someone can point you in the right direction of some good anime. I never would've thought I'd like Hellsing, but Elfen recommended it to me and I rather enjoyed it despite certain points where it lacked character development.
But my best example of late would definitely be Samurai Champloo. And I'm not talking the shitty English dub version they play on Adult Swim (yes, it may be snobby to prefer the subs over the dubs, but it simply is better to hear it in the original Japanese with a closer translation than what dub offers). At a glance, SC may appear like your standard sword fighting anime, but it's hardly just that at all.
What really pulls me in most with that show is the character development. You are following these three vagabonds (two samurai, and one teenage girl with a strong sense of duty) who meet through chance encounters and are working their way to a specific location that only the girl Fuu knows why they are really going there.
On the way, they get in all kinds of situations; some far fetched, others not so. Some focusing on the rubbish lifestyles of being a vagabond such as looking for something to eat, a place to sleep, or getting some action at the local brothel. Other situations are trying to get across checkpoints without a passport, entering an eating contest, or teaching a lesson to some young and rash taggers. All the while, if you pay attention, there is all sorts of wonderful social commentary in the show that raises questions about the way people lived then, and even the way people live now. I loved one of the more overt points the show makes about how styles in high fashion and trends tend to be born more out of idle eras. That was very true when I thought about it.
With everything that's going on in the background, there is still the main objective they all have of getting to this one location. The motivations for doing so become more clear as we gradually learn more about the story and characters in it.
The dialogue is often simple, yet strangely poetic at times. It is often funny and other times disturbing. It is an anime that doesn't take itself too seriously, yet takes its methods of conveyance very seriously. Best of all, most of the people in Samurai Champloo actually look like real people, as opposed to those ridiculous looking bubble people that are in most anime.
And yes, the fight scenes are pretty incredible. But no one shoots fireballs or lasers out of their eyes or anything.
This was such a good show for me, and at times it felt like I was watching live theater. So you see, I guess it's all about what a person gets from a show that makes them really enjoy it.
Didnt Samuel L. Jackson voice for the english version lol.
I remember seeing a commercial for it on adult swim a long time ago, and the animation did look top notch compared to something like Naruto.
Well, one thing I SERIOUSLY hate about animes is =
The mood is intense , someone had their baby stolen or something and someone got killed blah blah everyone is sad
then the comic relief part, where they just joke around and make stupid pun jokes. And then it feels like a comedy.
I'm not an anime fan myself, but I mean, why say grow up? It's just a show... and some of it is pretty cool like Inuyasha (that's the only anime I've ever liked... ohh, and Trigun is pretty cool)
But I don't go looking for Inuyasha and Trigun on TV or anything (Trigun doesn't are anymore though so whatever)

"Cards and flowers on your window, your friends all plead for you to stay,
sometimes beginnings aren't so simple, sometimes goodbye's the only way."
I watch some anime, but i tend to go for stuff targeted at my age bracket 18-25.
if your basing your arguements against liking anime on shows like pokemon, Yu Gi Oh, Shaman King, or MAR, then you probably need to exlore a few more series.
try something like Basilisk, Berserk, or Ghost in the Shell, they dont have any of the things people usually associate with anime, well kiddie anime anyways, "angry big Head" "sweat drip" "throbbing angry X's" "falling down in embaressment" "X or swirls over eyes when KO'ed" the usual crap you see in pokemon.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
I, "angry big Head" "sweat drip" "throbbing angry X's" "falling down in embaressment" "X or swirls over eyes when KO'ed" the usual crap you see in pokemon.
Thats exactly what I talk about.
The only "animes" I like are full feature film.
Princess Mononoke
Hayao Miyazaki is the master, but his new movies are shit.
Ghost in the Shell watched that with my brother
Samurai X I was told by my bro this was a TV show too, but DAMN
that movie was really gory and violent, and I loved it.
Apple Seed some sci-fi anime movie
Ninja Scroll
Gory and violent and sex filled, I liked that one too.
WOW, I didnt know I've seen so many anime flicks.
These are "adult" like, and gory and violent.
Not
"I SUMMON BUNNY DEVOURER OF THE BLUE EYED EAGLE"
card game series.
This one time I saw a really bad third rate american comedy so therefore it all sucks. You have to be a complete baby to watch any film produced in Hollywood.
Seriously, saying an entire industry is crap based on a few movies/shows makes you incredibly narrow minded and pretty thick.
You obviously didnt read mine or elfen's post then if you think I'm saying that.
I'm betting he's referring to the topic starter, not you...
There's really not much more to add to what's already been said. One cannot judge until they've experienced something in some way or another. There are a lot of fruitcakes out there that like to dress up like their favorite anime characters sometimes, and even though I love me some anime I'll still go and make fun of those people. Anime fans are not all the same, and neither is one anime compared to others.
There are good series and there are bad ones. There are long ones that never end, and there are 12 episode long series. If you want to understand why people like it so much, try watching something good. If you don't want to put forth the effort than you shouldn't feel the need to rag on people who do watch anime.
I only watch the subbed japanese versions of animes its kinda like reading a book but with moving art. It seems that alot gets lost in translation, and that for some reason english versions "softened up". I mean I just saw a naruto jap ver that had some guy telling naruto he had pussy *wonders how that will be translated*. Its all perspective, you may see it as childish but sombody else might find it refreshing(except cosplay that shits for fags). I try to watch the least amount of tele possible (most shows I watch on myspacetv) in order to avoid the subliminal messages, I advise u to do the same.
What the hell is up with all the anime fans here? I mean, it's pretty childish unless your watching hentai porn (god forbid). Seriously, what the hell? Shoot me for this, but, go grow up or give me a good reason why as adults and old teenagers you should still be fans of anime.
Its entertaining. You should get some knowledge on it before you make a thread about it. Not every anime is targeted for little kids you know. You can get into just like a story, movie, or book- its just displayed as a cartoon.
Try out Elfen Lied, or The Melencholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Elfen Lied is very serious, and alot more for a mature audience, where the second one is extremely hilarious. Its a but cute and stuff at some stuff, but most of the time its making fun of stuff, so I liked it.
Anime is regarded as cartoons, but they aren't just for kids. I enjoy me a good Full Metal Alchemist episode from time to time. They can be serious and extremely engaging, there are many animes out there specifically intended for mature audiences just because of the situations and the content such as death and language.
If anything, watch Elfen Lied. You will change your ideas about anime.
WHAT?!!!? WHAT?! WHAT DID YOU SAY?!?! -GASP-
DONT EVER EVER INSULT ANIME ( to thread starter )
Why anime is such a craze.
1. Gripping storylines that pulls the audiance in. ( NOT Pokemon, Digimon, etc. Basically MOST -not all- of the animes you have seen on T.V in DUB weren't really good anyways. After an anime series travels to the U.S, it loses much of its' side storylines; things that would be considered 'inappropriated' towards audiances in America )
Basically thats why anime is so awesome.
Now, just because anime is 'cartoon' doesn't mean it's for kids. The U.S pop culture has made all self-made cartoon kiddis. - Since when do you see tear jerking, slice-of-life moments, blood/gore, etc. in American cartoon? Since these attributes are hardly found in cartoon, you would expect foreign cartoon to be the same. For example, animes such as Elfen Lied, Death Note, Petshops of Horrors(<33), Tsubasa Resevoir Chronicles-THE MANGA-, and many many other more are not considered kiddish. A reason why America try to block anime that seem 'adult' (not meaning sex) is because they want to seclude themselves into believing that they are always right, and since cartoon is made for children, it should not have a mature storyline. I'm not saying everything single anime liscenser company is doing this, but think about this, will animes like Elfen Lied appear on a normal T.V channel, for the general public to see?
To Japan, anime is Hollywood, with a few exceptions of Japanese Drama.
Animes such as Naruto, Inuyasha, Sailor Moon, DBZ (<no offense, insert barf here>) and other super long animes may have corrupted your views on anime through the never ending side-stories( although some are good) that seem to go on forever. It's obvious that you can't go all the way to Japan just to see what other animes they have to offer, so you're stuck with the few selections that anime liscensers may think you would like.
The game my avatar is from is not like that whatsoever, so it's all good.
All those anime kiddie shows on TV, all there manga drawing, all thei weird ass har styles and clothes. So stupid.
