Would you prefer to be a Samurai or Ninja in the aspects of way of life, warrior code, and their discilpline they presented to others.
For myself...I would perfer a Samurai. I have been raised in a military family and honor and discilpline is needed for my life and my household.
Samurai's were discilplined warriors, and at the time, were the most advanced warriors on earth. Think about it. Samurai's were equipped with hard leather armor, razor-sharp swords, and above all...battle hardened warriors. When the Samurai's were honoring their rising sun country...other countries were throwing boulders at each other with their clubs and crude broad swords while armoring themselves with mere cloth armor.
Besides the point. Ninja's were considered monsters to the Asian countries. While Samurai's honored each other and their foes...Ninja's would be rutheless...showing no honor. They would attack from behind you, then, disappeared into the night. They appeared into the war scene with weapons like none other. Claws attached to their fists, throwing stars, and throwing knives. Warriors such as Ninja's...not presenting themselves in battle but attacking when no one was looking...was considered dishonorable to the Samurai culture.
Samurai's followed the road of honor, duty and discilpline. For if they failed their lord, they killed themselves for reasons of "unworthyness" to serve their lord. Such an act was considered at the time to be honorable. So whenever they have shamed themselves...they killed themselves to re-gain their honor. Samurai's would also carry out their foes wishes before defeat. Such respect, devotion and honor is to be noted.
But everyone tell me what you think and bring strong arguements and facts to this discussion.
i could be a samurai like Rurouni Kenshin, or i could be a ninja like Gennosuke.
Kenshin
Gennosuke
but i guess that is anime/manga samurai and ninja. ninjas in anime/manga are often more honourable than their real life counter parts.
hmm shouldnt this poll be one or the other not both? i.e which do you prefer more?
im gonna say both. bot have their advantages

Ninja's to me sound like dirty, cheap- shotting, thieving scoundrels. While Samurai's are hardcore and follow procedures and have dignity in what they do. This being said I would rather be a Samurai. They use katanas or something right? The commiting suicide if you mess up seemed a little bit farfetch'd, because I believe you should be able to redeem youself in a different way.
yes Samurai most commonly use a Katana, or a wakazashi (not sure of the spelling) while Ninjas use a Ninja To. A Ninja To is slightly smaller than a Katana.

I prefer ninjas... being able to attack in the night is a skill of its own, if ninja were feared this much, there was a reason for it. I'm sure ninja were disciplined as well, in their own way, otherwise they wouldn't have the skill. To say that a ninja is dishonorable because he doesn't go into battle directly is just kind of non-realistic. Guarilla warfare rules over blunt warfare because it's a more intelligent way. In war, there is no cheating, no honor, it's more of an intelligence battle now, those who do not understand are behind times, as you can see in The Last Samurai... and those samurai could have moved on, switched their katanas for something new, but no, all they could do is commit group suicide. I'm not sure what ninjas did, but I know that to find a samurai in Japan now is very rare.
And a lot of samurai "honor" thing is out of order. How will it help their lord if they kill themselves? That sounds more like a fanatical thing, because now the emperor has to raise extra samurai, lol. A failed samurai is better than a no samurai. Samurai, you see, are not conservative. And if a samurai feels like cutting someone up who disrespects him, it is just plain low.
"When the Samurai's were honoring their rising sun country...other countries were throwing boulders at each other with their clubs and crude broad swords while armoring themselves with mere cloth armor." - I wonder what this has to do with ninja or samurai, this is more about techonological achievement, which samurai failed miserably at by staying with those razor-sharp swords up to the era of the razor-sharp bullets.
I chose Samurai on the basis of their basics. Let me explain:
Samurai: First of all they're on the right side of the law, makes life easier. Second, they have a code of honor, so if they follow it, you know how they will react to situations and what they aren't allowed to do. It gives a form of reassurance to other peope around them.
However, killing yourself is counter-productive. You cannot gain anything or improve anything by doing that. If you mess up, it feels more like running from the problems you've caused rather than doing somethinga about them. Honor is also pointless in general and unrational. They are rules that do not separate from situation to situation. Any law that is static and doesn't adapt is inherently flawed, since there are close to an infinite number of situations, but only a few rules. They have to be spread out then to fit into each offence. Not good.
A Ninja however is an assassin. Killing people in cold blood, being hunter as a criminal, outlawed... Not really attractive.
A Ninja To is slightly smaller than a Katana.
The Ninjato is quite interesting, because it isn't a scientifically proven fact that the Ninjato ever existed.
Tell me, why would you carry a weapon that only assassins use? Makes you pretty easy to identify, don't you think?
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
I would imagine a ninja has his weapon concealed. And if he's caught with it, there's a chance he was killed first anyway.
And surely an assassin can have a code of conduct. I'm not sure what the borders of it would be, but I'm referring to certain types of assignments he would refuse on the basis that it is too petty or too evil.

i was watching this thing on ninjas on the history channel and it said the used a smaller sword. im not sure if it was called a ninja to could have been a wakazashi or maybe a yamato, not sure, but in BGII a ninja to is smaller than a Katana.

wakizashi, ninja to katana, they are all swords, only difference is their length, weight and width of the blade. same with european swords. Broad sword, short sword, long sword.

Ninja's favored the shorter blade because of one main reason. Deception. The ninja stance is pointing the tip of the sword to the foe...while keeping the entire sword parrallel to the ground. This creates an illusion to the foe on how long the sword really is. If you were the foe...all that you will see is the cross gaurd and the tip of the blade. You will not beable to see the length of the sword if it is pointing right at your head.

Well you do understand that the Samurai era started in the 14th century...right. They have went through several beliefs. So if they believed that killing themselves for failure was absolute to regain their honor...then that is what they believed in .... please remember that my ancestors are Japanese and my grandmother pushed me to understand greatly of ancient Japan.

Yes, but to view that sort of ideology in a modern context, I'm sure even many Japanese can acknowledge that it was dumb. I mean, why not insist the Samurai go on living because surely he has skills and knowledge that are still widely applicable.
I would imagine their masters just told them they had to kill themselves if they failed in order to ensure better performance from them. And so occasionally someone would kill themselves and the rest of the Samurai would think, "Hmm, I hope I don't have to retain my honor through such methods. I better be a better Samurai."
And besides your own personal beliefs as a Samurai (as far as a code of conduct), what made these guys any more honorable than ninjas? They were both essentially in it for the money, right? A hazardous way to make a living, true. But probably the best you could do at the time if you weren't an aristrocrat. And I'm still not keen on the whole beheading thing just for not bowing to a Samurai. That just transcends common sense into the most primitive form of class seperation.
