thank you fingolfin i could not remember the name of the other 700... its neat to wonder what would have happened if the army of 1000 who where guarding the pass didnt leave their posts... since they had such an advantage they might have been able to stop the 10,000 persians and we wouldnt have the story of the '300'

If you ever meet a hafling and a hungry dragon you dont have to outrun the dragon, you only have to outrun the hafling.
You guys have to remember that the movie was based off a graphic novel. That's why it could explain historical inaccuracies. I'm sorry to say I was a bit dissapointed. I think I expected way too much or I had bad seats. (Had to sneak in because I'm a minor with my friends, sat at wayyy front left) Good movie nonetheless. The beginning was pretty slow but the fighting scenes make up for everything else.

they left their posts in the movie? (if so first major historical inaccuracy spotted :P)
in reality there was a secret pass through the mountains behind the lines of the defenders and some local betrayed them to the Persians. Thats why they didnt stop them completely and only delayed them.
in the movie, the army of sparta wasnt allowed to leave there because of bad predictions from the oracle. however he took 300 men, the finest of the army, and went on since he couldnt take the entire army. and so the three hundred were doing great until the goat pass was given to the persians. as far as that i think, it was accurate.
Is it just me or did the "300" spartans look more like 80 spartans? Its wierd, no spartan had body armor yet I didnt see a spartan die until mid-movie. I wonder if their method of training warriors is accurate in the movie. All in all it was probably the best movie I've ever seen(but ill have to see it sober before I make that decision)
yea there was 300 but the screen showed at max 100 or less the whole movie. In actuality the day of the first battle(im talkin actuall history here) they killed nearly 10,000 men and lost 3 men. The Phalinx (spelling) technique of creating A shield and spear wall was perfected by the spartans and it was said they could not be beat while using that technique. in later years there phalinx technique would be beatin by other battle stratigies. Flanking with calvary and lighter support troops around the shield wall was one way of beating it as the shield wall could mostly only move forward left and right (no turning without breaking formation)
thank u, It is too said that for an even war the persians would have to have 3 times as many soldiers as the greeks. As the Greeks could kill 3 men(persins) for every one of their own deaths
good points Lord, very accurate. the phalanx was the ultimate technique for infantry. you would use shield and spear until the spear broke. at that point you would fight with sword while those behind and beside you attacked with spear. the men at the sides were the strongest and most crucial parts of the phalanx, for if they broke the enemy would have just enough of a gap to rip open the formation.
the technique of the Phalanx was used later tho. after the rise of the kingdom of Macedonia in northern Greece and just before Alexander the Great. At the time of Thermopyles this technique wasnt discovered yet.
Well, spartans, according to some picture I once saw in a history book, grouped in a line across the pass, round shields forward, spears over the shields. They didn't call their formation a phalanx, though. In fact, a phalanx doesn't need a narrow space to function.
10,000 to 3 lol, considering the Spartans had bronze shields and the persians only had wicker shields... what does a wicker shield protect you from?? small rocks?

from the history i read (and i like it so much i used to read alot :P) they brought 3 things to battle.
1. a shield they kept on their left hand.
2. a spear they used to throw on charge.
3. a sword for the actual battle.
now before the real Phalanx there wasnt an actual spear formation. In fact the spears used in Phalanx were around 5 meters long and the soldiers were out of reach for anyone trying to fight in close range, since there was a wall of spears around the formation. The ones used by the rest of the world before that time were shorter and were thrown (pretty much as like the ones we see in modern Olympics, only they used them to actually kill an opponent).
i had Rome in my hands a week after it came out. too bad my computer cant handle it as good as it does WoW. as soon as i get my new computer i know which game im passing again.
