Well im set and ready to see 300 on friday what about u guys?
Anybody wanna shed some light on the persian/spartan empires to get everyone excited?
anyways this movie looks SICK (no pun intended) looks like non stop fighitng with lots of gore and blood.
Anyone think it will be up there with BRaveHeart? maybe...though i dunno as Braveheart is one of the best movies ever
anyways share your'e thoughs on this upcoming movie. Im damn excited to c it friday
I wish I knew more about this period of history. The only thing I really know about the Persians now is that they make up the majority of Iran's population. At any rate, I am really excited to see this film too. Frank Miller has the most interesting directing style.
i'm never excited about movies that have something to do with ancient greek history (i'm Greek even and i get upset when they do things wrong - see Troy, Hercules etc).
Anyway, about the historical background it wasnt exactly a "Spartan - Persian War" but more like a greek-persian war (in history this series of wars is called the Persian wars). Spartans had a tradition as the strongest warriors in the ancient world so they did 2 things:
1. they never built a wall around their city since they said its their brave warriors that keep the city safe and no walls.
2. they never fled a battlefield.
for the 2nd point they remained in Thermopyles (thats the location of this battle). One of the 2 reigning kings of Sparta (there used to be always 2) as the general (Leonidas) and 300 men. There were also 700 locals that are always forgotten in history and kinda gets me pissed off since they had not the spartan custom and only stayed of bravery.
Anyway, there was supposed to be a battle there that held for weeks and had nearly 2 millions persians killed before the greeks were betrayed (not too sure of the number tho). Even though the persians won they lost moral and were defeated shortly after by the rest of the greek alliance.
Also as a side note, Persia was the strongest economical state during that time and was as a country. Greece was more from independent cities that had alliances with each other (or differences that were put aside to defeat the common enemy).
Angus the peasant saw the necromancer raising the rotting remains and ran away. Since then he told the tale of how he narrowly escaped the necromancer he called "juicy bones".
Interesting. So what ultimately became of the Persian empire?
in the end of the Persian wars they kinda got completely defeated. They still had some economic power but they didnt get the power they had ever again.
what did they do wrong with troy and hercules?
about Troy i'd say 4/5 of the stuff they said were historically incorrect. Like Agamemnon didnt die there (quite a few ancient greek tragedies were written about how he was killed by his wife and how his daughter wanted revenge etc etc). Achilles died right after he killed Hector (so he didnt enter the city). The war lasted 10 years and not only a few days. Well, thats some of the biggest mistakes they made.
About Hercules... nothing of what we see in the tv shows at least is right (mythologically). In ancient greek mythology he only did 9 great accomplishments (there's a certain term for it in greek that i dont know in english) and then got killed. He was a demigod and it was suspected that he was "promoted" to "full god" after his death.
Eh, what do you expect though. Hollywood films and historical accuracy have never really gone hand in hand. Albeit, I find it frustrating as well.
Especially with Braveheart. I was disappointed that they didn't show that brilliant Scottish pike formation where you got around ten guys standing shoulder to shoulder in a circle extending these pikes so the other army cannot get close to you. I know I'm not articulating the tactic very well plus I couldn't find a picture of what I'm talking about.

SICK...SILVER Inferno Crusading Knights ... Coming to Diablo 3 Realm Near You!
I really wish to see this movie, but as usual I probably won't. DVD seems to be more likely for me.
And I don't care how good of a tactician, location, training or morale you have, there is no way that 300 can stand up against a million when they are both on the same technological level. Not even if the enemy commander is an idiot.
If they are on different technological stages though, no problem. Just drop a hydrogen bomb and go home
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
but 300 totally did stand up to a million, its a historical fact, thats what makes it so badass. location made all the difference in the world, there were in a mountain pass something like 20 ft across, so the persians couldnt surround them, and they could take turns up front versus resting.

as i stated before the 700 locals that fought together with the 300 (so a total of 1000) keep getting "forgotten".
Anyway, Leonidas did choose the location very carefully. During that time Thermopyles (the location of this battle) was a small path. Spartans were fierce warriors and with the persians not able to take advantage of their numbers they naturally kept loosing.
