So, as people might have noticed and I've reiterated in some threads, this forum is pretty barren at the moment. I've told the folks who are running the show it needs some new content and a reboot for D4, we'll see what's gonna happen. There is a very few of you, old names; who have been around a while and are still checking, so I'm genuinely curious where people are at. Hint: If you're a new account make damn sure your post doesn't look like some ChatGPT random answer or I'm banning you to hell. ;-)
Question to all of you: What are your plans for D4, and what's your backstory of the Diablo universe (and beyond)?
I'll start. I'll just get this out of the way straight away - I most likely won't be playing D4, certainly not at start, maybe come winter if the game and/or my mood towards it changes significantly. What I've seen so far looks like a boring re-hash of D3 (which I've overplayed with around 5k hours), in an MMO setting (not good for me as I'd rather play WoW then, but I prefer solo/small group games over MMOs since the peer pressure makes me play too much). I'm also in general not trusting Blizzard at all anymore, I've elaborated on that topic at length here.
I still remember the beginnings of D1, it was truly magical and a breath of fresh air in the late 90s. Then D2 was maybe one of the most perfect games ever, mostly because of the ambience. And it was the music, not the colour, as Blizzard seems to not have understood - just turning the brightness down and gore up doesn't make a Diablo game, the music of D1+D2 was haunting and that's what made it special for me, Lut Gholein was fucking brighter than a 1000 suns, all this "D3 isn't dark enough" shit does my head in. Then I switched to WoW for about 2 years and got terribly addicted and swore to not touch WoW ever again... and instead was eagerly waiting for D3 because I wanted the single player experience. D3 was okay, but never as awesome as D2. What made it great for me was the friends along the way - some I consider very close, even IRL friends, now. I continued to play D3 even after most of them stopped just to finish the season journey, but stopped doing that about a year ago as well. During the pandemic, I kept my head above water with WoW Classic, and as expected got hooked again - way too hooked. But since the end of the pandemic I've just more and more lost the desire to play video games altogether; quit WoW, and haven't touched any game in 2023. Maybe it'll come back, but I've watched a few D4 beta streams and videos and it really, really didn't look appealing. I could go at length about what it is that I don't like, but maybe the TL:DR is just that... after playing on and off a lot for the past nearly 30 years, the pandemic was a last hoorah of playing waaaaaay too much (WoW mostly) it might just be it for games. At least the ones that consume a lot of time, and both MMOs as well as ARPGs tend to do that. Maybe casually playing some SC2 coop come winter again or so, we'll see.
Contrary to your position I am super hyped about D4.I've played both betas and the recent server slam and I cant wait to dive again later in june(got exams to pass till around 15 june,so unfortunatly wont be around for release).
My story with the Diablo games goes a little chaotic but here it is:
My most played Blizzard game is Hearthstone(and still is to this day) and in 2019 I was casualy watching Blizzcon for the announcment of the new HS expansion. It came and went by,but I decieded to continue watching for a while to see whats next.Suddenly the D4 trailer begins. When it ended I was stunned and was like "What the hell was that and why was it so awesome?".
I immediately open battle.net and install D3 free trail.I played it and fell in love with the gameplay.Quickly grab 20$ and head to the nearest retailer to buy D3 battlechest(Im kinda a collector, like having my games in boxes lol).Run back home to continue playing.
1 whole month.Only Diablo 3.No Hearthsone,no nothing.Even got my best friend to buy the game so we can play together, but after a while he said it just wasnt his thing. My birthday was coming so he gifted me the Necro pack. And this is where my love for the necro class began.Played another 2 whole months only with necro characters.
After that I started losing interest and played less and less and evenually stopped. For 3 years forgot Diablo even existed.
Howerver the marketing campign for D4 got me and when I saw the reveal for necro I remembered my old love and got hyped.Even bought D2R for my PS5 and played trought it.Fantastic expiriance.Heck even dusted the old PSP to try the D1 on it but havent had the time to finish it.
Played the D4 betas an got even more hyped.I am feeling very positive about the game and I kinda belive that it will redeem Blizzard, even if just a little.Big props to the D4 team,I think they really are doing a great job with the whole listening to the community and stuff.
