Welcome to week four of the DiabloFans Beta Key Contest! This week is going to be slightly different than the previous three weeks: this time we're doing a mini-writing contest. If any of you haven't seen already, there is an NPC in Diablo III named Binkles the Frog and we're dying to find out more about him! We want you to come up with his backstory, fit him into the Lore of the Diablo Universe, and simply tell us what in the world he is doing around Sanctuary.
We'll choose the best one or two entries week and they'll be granted a Diablo III Beta Key. In addition, the winning piece(s) will be placed on his wiki page permanently as his "fan lore." Submissions should be posted in this thread and you are allowed more than one entry if you'd like! You have until October 31st at midnight to get your submissions in.
Sorry to sound like a newb, but where do we see Binkles the Frog as an NPC in Diablo III? Am I the only one that feels lost?
His presence has been datamined. That's all we really know about him, the rest is up to you! Click on his wiki link in the OP to see him.
Thanks for the info. I'm just curious if/when we've heard of Binkles before today. If he's been mentioned before, when?/Where? If not, I can move on and create my amazing biography for him! BTW, good luck to all!
I am no longer going to put effort into these contests. Every single time, someone who puts very little effort and time into it wins. A few lines of text + some heading on the bottom >>>>>>> 3-4 hours of effort. Stupid contest.
Binkles the Frog was once a rich merchant, known by the name of Gheed. He was part of the one percent, the richest men in all of Sanctuary. He built his wealth by gambling and trading a vast selection of products to many great warriors.
One day, Gheed had a shipment of rare expensive potions coming in and he decided to sell guarantees of receiving the item to his customers. Among his customers was a powerful witch doctor, the witch doctor mistakenly trusted Gheed and paid to be guarantee a potion from Gheed's shipment. However, Gheed miscalculated and he had oversold the amount of potions he received in his shipment. He was able to deliver the potion to only half of the customers that he had promised a potion and due to his greedy nature he embezzled the gold he received from the remaining customers and fled.
The witch doctor happened to be one of the customers who received nothing; he was extremely upset that he did not receive his potion so he went looking for Gheed. When he finally found Gheed gambling somewhere in the Borderlands, he brought his own form of justice upon Gheed by setting a plague of toads upon Gheed, poisoning his skin which rotted his flesh slowly while paralyzing his limbs. Gheed was presented with an ultimatum by the witch doctor, to either die slowly or to become a frog as it was the only way to stop the poison's terrible effects. The once rich and devious merchant now begged for his life, he did not want to die. The witch doctor turned Gheed into a frog and decided that he had not suffered enough. "I must think of a terrible name for you, something ridiculous and embarrassing so you will die forever alone", said the witch doctor "Ahh I really have to go tinkle! WAIT! I've got it! Binkle! no, Binkles! Binkles the frog!"
Everyone in the Sanctuary had heard of how Gheed was turned into Binkles the frog. Merchants and traders became more aware of not breaking promises or robbing their consumers. Binkles the frog is now part of the witch doctor's arsenal of attacks as one of many exploding frogs that he unleashes against the undead and other Evils.
Binkles the Frog is a descendent of Frog King, the one and only Frog King who helped stop Wikileaks from destroying the lives of millions. Few know as to why Binkles the Frog is now roaming around New Tristram though.. that is until recently when Binkles the Frog visited the great Deckard Cain. Deckard Cain was told by Binkles that great evil was afoot, but he was also told of 5 heroes that would arrive to vanquish the evil. Binkles the Frog was said to be the one to guide the heroes through their journey as well. Until these heroes arrive though, Binkles can usually be found at the local bar or the alley behind the blacksmiths selling illegal potions.
Binkles the Frog. That was his new name, and he had better get used to it. Diablo had chosen to return in the most obvious way possible, in a comet, in order to instill terror in peoples all around. Mephisto, however, had wanted to come back in a more covert way. Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred, had returned as the most hated thing of all--a simple mosquito. His plan had been to invade and take over the body of a human--perhaps a certain Necromancer that had gotten lucky years before--but alas, it was not meant to be.
Upon his first night of return in Sanctuary, in the swampy woods of Kurast, he had encountered his first problem. The angel-demon offspring had found a deep magic to disguise themselves...they called this magic "repellent" and kept it contained in impenetrable bottles of all shapes in sizes. For a week, Mophistosquito hovered around the village of the Kurast Docks, waiting for the invisibility spray to wear off, hoping he would by chance run into the fiendish creatures. By the time the seven days were over, he felt age getting to him, as if he had lived half a lifetime. Mophistosquito knew then that time was running short.
He worked faster, spreading out further as his hope failed. And then he saw it: a human male, emerging from an outhouse--the evil magic had been overriden by some other smell, highlighting him! Mophistosquito charged, needle-nose extended as much as possible. But his greatest challenge awaited him. A creature many times his size and weight, rippling with an odd skin, pounced in front of his path. A frog, green to blend in with the swamp, had wandered into town. Mophistosquito pulled back, trying to stop or avert his course, but it was too late. The tongue lashed out and wrapped around his outstretched nose, pulling him in to the beast's mouth. He tried to struggle, only to puncture the frog's throat with his needle. Instead of blood pouring in, Mophistosquito was sucked out. The frog's green coloring became tainted, becoming more yellow.
Mephrog was born, but it was not over yet. The human had reached him and was bending over. Mephrog's body quivered with rage and fear--he was in no state to fight!
"Yes, you'll do quite nicely," the man said. "Come, I take care of you. You Binkles. Binkles the Frog. I Witch Doctor and we have much fight to do. Oh, yes, many demons come and Doctor and Frog must unite in battle."
And so Binkles the Frog was born...or reborn. Whatever.
Yeah I kinda have to agree. I mean everyone has their own sense of humor, but there are way better submissions with a lot more creativity then the ones that won the contest. Oh well though, congratulations to the ones that won you lucky sons of binkles. I did read that more beta invites are going out after blizzcon and the new patch for the beta though, so hopefully more people will get into the beta soon.
