Another PC-only developer succumbs to the shit-pile that is consoles. Yes I realize Diablo 1 came out for the PS1, I had hoped they would have learned from that failure.
I expect any future diablo titles to be dumbed down console kiddy pieces of shit like the vast majority of games out there today.
Whoa, put down the razor, son. And maybe Blizzard did learn from Diablo 1 being on the Playstation. Such as how to make it better for a console than that game was.
I still stand that games to be played with a mouse can never be played as well as on a PC, but your bias against consoles here almost makes me believe there are tons of people like you who hate the idea just cause they hate consoles in general.
1) PS3 and XBOX360 can both hook up mice / keyboards
2) The new motion sensor technology.... Specifically the PS3 Move. The wand can be used similiar to a mouse
3) Hack and slash = Click spamming on PC and button mashing on a controller. I can name a few PS1 and PS2 hack and slashes that were fun, and had multiple skills...
I can name a few PS1 and PS2 hack and slashes that were fun, and had multiple skills...
And i will.. The Champions series is pretty much just like Diablo but in a console. (Ps2,Xbox) and they were loaaaads of fun. Also Brute Force (xbox) and Hunter the Reckoning (Xbox,Ps2) although both Brute Force and Hunter both also had guns but they also had melee.
And i'd just like to mention, that playing 4 player in these games with my friends was just about the best console experience i had.. So now that i think about it, i would in addition to the D3 PC version, also buy the console version just to relive those moments.. even though i don't actually own a console (most of my friends do though).
LOL... blizzard exploring console concepts for diablo eh. Doesn't surprise me. It was bound to happen eventually with blizzard getting greedy now and activision prodding them along with a cattle stick.
I just hope this doesn't slow down the development for diablo 3 for the pc.
AND I don't like the fact that people who don't deserve the game (those who never played D2) will be able to grab D3 for their console with no knowledge of the story or previous games, just because it looks cool.
How does it make any sense to want to limit the D3 experience to those who've played the previous games? And, even if D3 was somehow forbidden for all people who haven't played D2 to pick up, the vast majority of the D2 playerbase only know that you're supposed to kill the three Prime Evils. And that amount of story takes about 2 seconds to learn by reading on the back of the D3 box when it's bought.
It is tough to also have casual people play your game, but you'll just have to live with it.
1) PS3 and XBOX360 can both hook up mice / keyboards
2) The new motion sensor technology.... Specifically the PS3 Move. The wand can be used similiar to a mouse
Auto targeting system? Not sure I like the sound of that.
While 1) does solve the problem, far from everyone will buy a mouse/keyboard for their console just to play D3. Good for those who do, but not for the rest.
Motion sensors could work, but it would still have to be possible to play it with just a regular controller. Which brings us back to the central problem of porting it, and the precision a mouse gives you. Button mashing works on both, but on the console you can't aim as well. Which some mild form of autotargeting could help alleviate. Or it will be no different from FPS games, where aiming with a controller is harder than with a mouse but perferctly learnable.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
I think most of you guys are forgetting that the way they have designed Diablo 3 is that it already basically plays exactly like a console game now with decreased potion use, less town visits etc. A regular console controller would be all that you would need for a console version. I mean, how many buttons do you actually use in Diablo? Mini-map button, show-items button, menu button (for all your menu needs like char, inv, skills etc), attack1 button, attack2 button and potions. These could easily be cleverly configured onto a controller. The only thing you would have to worry about is the mouse but the joystick button on the controller can work well for the movement and the X button could be attack. Sure, you may no be able to focus enemies as easily but that just means you have to be a bit more careful.
If they could manage to make a UI that's compatible to Microsoft's Kinect then it's going to be not only possible to play but also quite good for the Xbox. Other than that i don't see much of a chance to make it even decent. I still remember playing Diablo 1 on the playstation with a gamepad and it was nothing in comparison to the PC version.
For the most part, I just dont understand why they'd explore this option.
The last Diablo released for console [PS1 I believe] was a complete mess. Add to that the fact that Blizzard has very low specs for their games, which equals more people able to play it on older PCs. So its not like they are trying to get more people able to enjoy it, but otherwise couldnt run it.
Lets face it .. the game needs a keyboard and mouse. You'd need them, so consider those an additional buy for a PS3 or 360.
One cool thing to note -- if they would make it for Move and/or Kinect. That would be wild ... Kinect especially !!!
I dont know ... im glad they said if they decide to do it, it would not effect production for D3 on PC .. but again, I just dont see the point in pursuing this.
Lets say we are playing D3 using a Ps3 / Xbox controler. We will move the character with the left analog stick, and we will be able to change the character's facing direction with the right stick. That means that if you leave the left stick and move with the right one your character will strafe around while still looking at one spot. So that wont work unless they implement more animations for walking backwards etc.
What could work is something like this: The left analog stick moves your character and changes the direction it faces accordingly. For an example, if you are looking north and you pull the left stick down, the character will make a turn and then procceed with running south. This option leaves the right analog stick free for the skills and spells use.
I can see how all the skills could potentially work if you just aim with the right analog stick to some direction and press R2 / RT and the spell would be casted in the given direction. There will be no cursor for aiming but just the direction your character is facing.
Spells like Leap attack and Teleport wont be a problem either. They would either have a fixed ranged or some sort of a mechanism that if you hold down the spell casting button, some sort of UI will appear and show you a line the extends and retracts automaticly. When you release the spell casting button, you will be teleported / leap to the place where you chose to make the line stop.
What im trying to say is a full console port could absolutely work if they figure out all of the little details.
I used to be skeptic about console games and the ability to control something with a controler just like when you use a keyboard and a mouse but since i moved in with a roomate that has an Xbox, my views changed. A controller with two analog sticks would be more than perfect for a game like Diablo 3.
Kinect? Oh god no! I have nothing against motion controllers, using your body as a controller works for games like bowling, tennis, etc. But when you extend it to swinging a virtual sword or casting your virtual spells... well you end up looking ridiculous and your usual hardcore gaming experience is reduced to swinging your arms and making spirals with your head... It is also not accurate, not fast paced (unless you control by moving your fingers... but wait, that is already done with regular controllers...), and a lot of compromises have to be made for the game to work.
A few problems for a Kinect Diablo:
1. Targeting a specific enemy.
2. How to spam spells.
3. How to cast different spells.
4. How to cast spells in a direction.
Obviously you need something for the direction, probably one of your hands, that leaves one hand/arm to control all spells, etc. I really don't see it working ^^
would have the same concerns had i not known they're making a Star Wars game compatible, not sure if it's Force Unleashed II or something else. you obviously need to move, exactly as you should move playing Diablo. perhaps moving your hand in a certain pattern for each spell? (very much like Harry Potter did for Wii with spells). i don't know, really, just brainstorming here. They didn't even say it was gonna be Diablo III, could be just some sword/shield, dual wielding, spell slinging action kind of slaughter game they're thinking of.
This will screw up the experience of the PC so bad if they go around and changes stuff to make it also work with console's controlers... I'm warning you blizz, don't do this.
A hack and slash can definitely work on a console if the developer designs it to play to the strengths of a controller. Blizzard has already stated that the PC version will remain unaffected by any console ventures.
If they made a Diablo spinoff on console with different areas, spells, and classes then it might be really good. I'm skeptical that it could ever compare to Diablo 3 though. I think the biggest limiting factor of consoles is the decreased network functionality.
For example if a game was made for the xbox 360 would Microsoft allow players to connect to Battle.net without paying the xbox live subscription fee? I doubt it. The ps3 may have less restrictions (I dont know, I dont have a ps3).
Actually it would. Instead of making the character face the direction the right stick is pointing at, it will stop and cast/attack in that direction. Like if you would make your character walk to a point in D2, and then click to cast somewhere while running. It overrides the previous action (movement).
Spells like Leap attack and Teleport wont be a problem either. They would either have a fixed ranged or some sort of a mechanism that if you hold down the spell casting button, some sort of UI will appear and show you a line the extends and retracts automaticly. Well I wouldn't be ok with a fixed range, and the second option is obviously either too slow or too inaccurate. Those solutions doesn't work for me :/ The gameplay would be changed too radically, it wouldn't feel like you are playing Diablo.
You probably didnt understand the first part you quoted. And secondly, Gameplay changess are essential imo if you want to make a port successful. And "it wouldnt feel like you're playing diablo" is not a valid arguement unless you are talking specificly about yourself.
The direction that your character is facing must be tied with the direction that you are moving in because if not you would be able to walk backwards and strafe in a weird way. When you want to cast a spell, you aim with the right stick and as you said it overrides the movement command and make you stop in your place. But the question is, when you use the right stick to aim, will your character turn around and "follow" the direction you are aiming at, or will it just turn you to the direction only if you actually cast a spell. In this case, a special UI would have to be implemented to show us the direction we are aiming at.
Lol nvm dude, im just trying to figure out some bullshit. Its intersting
It most certainly would be for the 360/ps3/wii no nex gen consoles are coming out until 2014 least 2016 latest... And unless they are gunna wait an extra two years to release d3 for consoles i don't think so.

I personally think the move would be more compatible with RPGs. The lack of buttons what so ever on the kinect makes it kind of hard to switch items/ switch spells/ use spells/ etc.
The move wand actually acts similiar to a mouse in that you can drag and drop, point click (it has a cursor in some games) and it comes with buttons. You also have the navigator which can be used to move using a stick.
Lastly, the kinect kind of lags compared to the move. The fact that it needs to BOTH draw a wireframe and then analyze each move of the wireframe per command takes a slight bit longer than just watching an orb move and apply a gyroscope.
Why not casting the spell in the direction by tapping the stick in that direction? It would solve the spam issue as well since you can freely launch skills in different directions without delay. Holding in the stick would cause you to repeat that skill over and over.
Still not sure about the teleport system though. Not enough Diablo feel
Yea that could also work. But im pretty sure the movement style will be like WASD. No cursor at all, just the analog. Oh and about the teleport, maybe we can get like 3 different distances that we can tele to. Like, close ranged, medium and long. If you hold the right stick in a direction while teleport is the selected skill, you will need to press 1 out of 3 buttons to determine the distance of the tele. :starwars:

I actually own Fallout 3 on PC and Xbox, but for no particular reason. Seriously I wonder why I have one for each.

Please explain the link between dumb games and consoles, and why this property must apply to a D3 port as well.
Just sayin'. Don't start the hate before we know any details.
