Diablo: Diablo II hits #7 in top 50 games of the decade from Destructoid. http://bit.ly/4on0lk
So Diablo 2 made it to #7 best game of all time.
Back in 2000, Diablo II was unbelievably popular -- it was one of the most played and talked-about games of the year. That?s a pretty amazing accomplishment. But what?s really amazing is that you can hop onto Battle.net today (Blizzard?s free online gaming service) and still see around 50,000 people playing the classic hack-and-slash role-playing game. 50,000 people. TEN YEARS AFTER THE GAME?S RELEASE! This die-hard devotion is what makes Diablo II so timeless, and an obsession among certain gamers.
The story in Diablo II is classic Blizzard, involving a dark lord and some mystical powers, but that is not what makes the game so fantastic. The addictive gameplay is what brings people back to this game over and over again. By choosing between a handful of varied classes (Barbarian, Necromancer, and Paladin, to name a few), players enter the isometric realm of Diablo II and explore elaborate, multi-level worlds while fighting an ungodly amount of constantly spawning enemies. Unlike the original game, Diablo II was designed with online play in mind, so jumping into an eight-person party, exploring a randomly-generated dungeon, and collecting loot and gaining levels is hopelessly addictive. It really is one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences you will ever have.
I have to admit, while I have played this game for the last 10 years, I never took the time to learn the small minute intricacies of the game. Maybe this might just be my lack of knowledge but what is with this dragon in the screen shot of hell forge.

This only shows how bad taste can ruin a list. I would have included bioshock in the top 20 games. D2 in the top 3, I see games as a package so d2 also comes with d1. Where the fudge is mass effect?
A accurate measurement of these things would be to compare the amount of people playing online. But that would of course only work for games that have an online function that most people are using.
And thats why D2 IS and D3 WILL be better than WoW you can play off line if u want to and of course NO PAYING!
Frankly, I've just played the first one, and while Halo certainly was somewhere between "ok" and "good", it's far from revolutionary, except that somebody for the first time in history understood that there's no point in trying to make a PC shooter for consoles, but you need to make a console shooter for consoles. Hell, the story is its weakest link.
Actualy Halo was originally a Mac RTS, then it changed into a Mac FPS, then it changed into a PC FPS, then it was ported to the Xbox.
And Halo was a fantasy shooter, bringing nothing new to the table, not even for this decade.
Well the sole thing it brought was that after being thrown around on different platforms, at the end of the day it was given console-friendly controls, which was the thing that made it so popular.
Then what makes it better then other console-friendly fps's, like Golden Eye? It was just another game that just happened to stick as far as I can personally see. Yea, it was fun, but it had no story, it didn't do anything different, and it didnt add anything. At least Half Life 2 brought the idea of using physics as a weapon, even if the game was bleh.
I'd say the list is pretty heavily biased, and the writer didn't really use consistent logic throughout his choices. Phoenix Wright, after the "WTF?" has worn off, is not at all a good game. Memorable for the WTF and quite amusing, but not top-50 by a long shot.
As far as the Halo debate goes, who says a game needs to be revolutionary, or even creative to be great? -not to say that Halo isn't revolutionary/creative. Arguing about creativity when it comes to games is pretty pointless anyway. There's almost always a book or movie that's done it in some way before a game has, and you can over-simplify any game to the point it looks like a copy-paste job on the part of the writers. Arguing about what's creative and what isn't is pointless. Judge the game by its own merits.
The story of the Halo universe is definately above average. Much better than, "You're a reporter (no, not an army scout) sent to investigate an island occupied by military forces. They capture you and use you for genetic experiments. You're pissed." or "Bad guy took used time machine to take over world. You use other time machine to fix it."
No one saw the flood coming till that fateful level. You didn't expect the end-game superweapon to destroy, not save you. Several plot twists While there were some cliches (AI serves itself, etc.) and such, it was overall very good and by far better than the linear stories of most other games.
Then gameplay. This is where Halo hit home. It perfected console FPS. Did it make any major, revolutionary changes? No. But it made so many small improvements it didn't need to. Instead of a bunch of half-baked features with a new, half-baked feature, Bungie did its best to perfect the pre-existing elements of a shooter. The game's multiplayer popularity should speak for itself on this one.
EVERY single time I see one of these "greatest games" lists, Halo gets mentioned in the discussion boards. Almost everyone has heard of Halo, even non-gamers. The franchise has always been extraordinarily popular throughout it's 8 year life, and has had several record-breaking sales figures. Among the millions of players on xbox live, Halo 2/3 haven't ever dropped out of the top 10 most played XBL games. Halo, the game that started it all, is most definately "great."
Its....not revolutionary....in the slightest... When a new prettier FPS comes out, people will drop Halo and go to the new prettier FPS. We all know it. Golden Eye was revolutionary. Wolfenstein 3D was revolutionary. Halo was....generic... Good stupid fun, but generic none-the-less.
Maybe if they took some time to come up with original ideas...then cool...but as it is, it's a generic stupid-fun shooter.
Not saying the people playing are stupid, or the game as stupid, but using the word "stupid" as a descriptive word for the word "fun".

Golden Eye WAS revolutionary cause it was the first successful fps that was released on a console. I don't know about wolfenstein 3D i've actually only played the original on my uncles old 95.
And yeah i got to agree with Link most fps last for a certain amount of time, die, and are replaced by something else. But thats just how the fps community does things.
Hmm. I loved Shadow of the Colossus, but I don't know if it really deserves first.
Also, we can't judge based on Online play.
Runescape would win. Is that really the best game of the decade?

First place though....hmmmm....
That means that your favorite game wont be on it if it was made before 2000...
It got 19 kinda sad really but this is just one poll.
HL2 definitely deserves the spot it got, very good game would and will play again.
WoW in my opinion should have been in the top 5 at least.
And thats why D2 IS and D3 WILL be better than WoW you can play off line if u want to and of course NO PAYING!
"Sorry Master Chief, Wario kicked your ass."
