More news on the locations we'll be visiting, somewhat indirectly though.
A user on twitter asked the boys on the Diablo Twitter page how many classes they planned for, and if the locations visited would cover all those detailed on the Sanctuary map.
Their response, was thus...
Official Blizzard Quote:
Diablo: @Midnightact We'll have five classes and no we're not creating the entire world in. We're visiting specific locations similar to Diablo II.
The part about the classes, we all knew.
And the part about the locations, may have you thinking "Oh joy, a vague response."
But bear with me.
The locations in Diablo III so far, have been a forested lowlands, and a desert. The locations in Diablo II, started with forested lowlands, and then moved on to a desert.
If we take that trend, then we can pretty safely assume that next up, we'll be seeing a jungled area, and then, we'll be travelling to hell. This speculation of Hell's sequence in the acts is strengthened by how it appeared in Diablo I, and Diablo II. Both were reserved for the last act.
If this isn't enough for you, remember those bubbling waters we had to trudge through in Act III? Well, some time ago, they tweeted about work being done on a tar pit effect. Discussion ensued, and some suggested that it would follow in the footsteps of the bubbling waters of Diablo II's vision of Kurast.
While we probably won't be visiting the EXACT same areas as in Diablo II, it does seem that the areas themselves, and the sequence that we've seen them in, is quite similar to how they appeared in Diablo II.
Anyways, time has yet to tell what the next act(s) will hold for us, but hopefully, this gives us a hint at what's next.
Or, if you don't agree with my interpretation of this, then check out Scyberdragon's, located here.

Interesting. I honestly hope they don't make the 3rd act too similar to the 3rd act in DII. A similar transportation between acts would work, but I would still prefer a seemless transition by walking between acts.
As for the bubbling tar effect, I think that will most likely be in the Desert area somewhere. Well, maybe not. More that I hope it will be in there.
I just had an interesting idea. What if they had quick sand and bubbling tar pits where a bystander got stuck, and it pulled them in. As a hero, you can try to save them by clicking on the pit area where the person went down. Then there would be a quick Animatic sequence where you character dives into the quick sand, and comes out into a dungeon. This is where you'll have to fight off the demons who tried to drag him to hell.
They could have that style of dungeon with quick sand in the desert and the tar pit in the jungle. What do ya'll think. Nice little change to a dungeon entrance and quest start I think.
Pretty disappointing update. Seeing as they provided a map of sanctuary, a lot of us probably expected a lot of places to be available to us. Even me, I was expecting they would create almost the whole map and have it almost open world like WoW was simply because they talk about these open world scenarios.
Didn't they say we will be visiting multiple locales per act? Why are we assuming Act I forest Act II desert Act III jungle Act IV Hell?? It could be possible that they have only showed a single environment from the act as to not give too much away. Plus I could have swore they also said somewhere the we will be visiting different areas then D2 (besides Tristram of course)
Because Act 1 has been forest, and Act 2 has been desert.
We visited multiple locales in DII as well, but it still boils down to the fact that each act took place in one geographically similar area. Sure, we visited caves, tombs, and ruins, but they were all still in a desert.

Maybe we'll have to revisit all the locations similar to D2, because the wanderer did more than just wandering ? Still quite disappointed at this update, their goal is probably achieved. Lower my expectations, then give more than expected right? hmm
"Diablo: @Midnightact We'll have five classes and no we're not creating the entire world in. We're visiting specific locations, similar to Diablo II."
I think that's what they meant. Not that they'll be visiting locations specifically similar to the ones in Diablo II (which would be a pretty poor choice, in my opinion) but that they are letting us playing in several select locations as opposed to the whole world (like in Diablo II.)

My typical train of thought: Everything -> Sex -> Diablo
i agree that he didnt mean the specific locations would be similar to d2. rather that there would be featured areas and towns (that you fight/explore/interact with npcs in) within the whole world.
however i wouldn't mind the same kind of areas.. in fact, seeing the old towns or travincal or etc would be especially cool to me.

they'll never see me coming.. life is a sequence of tragedies, inconsistent only by fleeting, elusive moments of pleasure,
serving only to ensure absolute vulnerability to the pain of their inevitable absence.

I don't think Zhar interpreted the message as, "well be visiting the same areas as D2".
What I believe Zhar was saying was that we will only be visiting a few areas of the world(like D2), but strangely enough, D3 is starting to shape up like D2 as in the first world being mainly forested, then desert like, etc.

It sounds like he was reffering to the locations working in ways that were similar to how D2 was. Not neccesarily similar locations... Get what I mean?
For me, it's not the environments that are the issue, it's the starting towns. Even if the environments only differ slightly (there are only so many environments in the world), the game will be lost if there is no variety or interest in the towns. For example; what’s happening in these towns dictates how the environments around react and vice versa. I was hoping that D3 would have a much stronger sense of story – or detail. A good example was the beginning of the wizard trailer. So far we have New Tristram and Caldeum, both are similar to act 1 and 2 in D2, but I’m hoping that the difference of the npc’s, the town and the small differences in the environment will be very satisfying. This coupled with something completely new like a watery/coastal area would be fantastic.
bringing us back to a few key locations wouldnt always be a bad thing. It could help the lore in that it brings us back to story we last lived (transition, recolection). It could also be fun if they use it right. Id personally like 1 or 2 flashbacks to previous events that have happened. I dont feel that this should be happeneing at the end of the game however. The first act or two would be the most optimal.
We already have tristrem so thats good, but i think if they dropped us into a 2nd place, thatd be nice. Arret summet has been thrown out in one of these threads, but cant really as it is now a crater. maybe just a flash back during a convo with cain? an actual flashback where ur at a birds eye view watching fallen raid a city. Or, while going through the game, you can see a similar place from the vilage ur in. we dont have to be directly in the past event/place, but seeing it or being apart of it will have some effect on u.
As for this thread, we will not be living d2 out again. They have made it quite evident that this is not d2 with new eye candy, it is a new game, more lore, new mechanics. I personally feel, other than tristrem, there will be little BIG impact from other cities or previous events. just hope some is brought back to help bridge the connection

I totally agree. But even moreso with the NPC's IN the town.

Absolutely, since in the wilderness; with the appearance of monsters, all pretense of realism is thrown aside. However with a town, it's where you really feel the realism of the story. The whole vibe is generated through it. I mean; I was terrified of the Butcher even before I opened his door and shat my pants. *Figuratively Speaking (I was only 11 back then in 1995)
Hence why I hated Torchlight, "so shallow". I literally couldn't bring myself to play through it a second time.

What I really liked about it, was the development of the characters. It's like any good movie. If the visuals are top notch, the action is intense, but there is no character development, it will only result in a more epic failure. (Transformers 2)(Torchlight)
They are fun to (watch/play) the first time around. I remembered loving the special effects from Transformers 2, but it's not something I'll remember and watch over and over again, such as LoTR.
I think I've watched the Matrix and LoTR series dozens of times, and I won't even tell you how many times I've seen the Star Wars Trilogy.
Character development is EVERYTHING.
D1 had it in Tristam, albeit simple by today's standards. That's what gave life to Diablo and made it such a success.

Might I add that for what it's worth. I'm not really looking forward to seeing a difference in both games as much as I'm hoping for a fullfilling experience through amazing character/story progression. I feel alot of the Diablo community are on par with this idea and know that; Lore, Storylines, depth are what set games such as D1, D2, D3 apart from the rest of the mindless junk.
Lol, thank you mate, one of the few who read my post correctly ^^.
My pleasure

You start in the forest area near Tristram, you move west just like in D2 however this is all in one act. You do not spend much time in a desert like are but more in a savanna flavored area. (North Aranoch?) You use a ship to reach Kehjistan obviously.
One problem. We always headed east in D2. "We traveled east. Over the mountains and into the vast desert of broken lands."
I already don't like to see the same type of enfiorment, imagine see it in the same order lol.
ActII as desert is a fail from blizz in my opnion.
But i agree we will se alot of new and different enviorments. In the art works there are some dungeons who looks pretty nice. What i'm trying to say is that if we visit really new and nice indoor areas the bad effect of boring outdoors can be minimimalized.

True dat.
Also, remember that D3 has FOUR acts as standard.
