In response to some of the videos from the recent coverage during the Gamescon in Germany, some video stills may show that the Magic Find item modifier and the tetris/grid-based inventory system have returned. Whether or not this is wholly welcome is up to you.
Among the many YouTube and gaming coverage site videos uploaded from visitors to the Gamescon of 2009, it would seem some have proven to show that there is tons of information about the upcoming Diablo III title if one is simply willing to look hard enough. The following image shows a cursor hovering over a timed buff that increases Magic Find and gold dropped, an effect gathered from a shrine, none-the-less:
Some interesting things are of note here. MF shrines? What's up with that? It can be remembered that there were some fans who suggested a similar idea, even on this very board, but it will be interesting to see, if kept in the game, how this will affect the typical Diablo-grinding fest players often endured to find the best items. Similarly, it also makes one wonder how Magic Find will work in Diablo III- hopefully better than it did in Diablo II.
Also, the fact that they even bothered continuing with the increased gold modifier makes one wonder if they have, indeed, come up with a way of making gold more useful in light of the relative ease of gathering and uselessness of it in Diablo II. One would think that the developers would not even bother with the modifier again if it would not prove useful. But, of course, we all know that Blizzard developers are just as prone to mistakes as everyone else and, if it is any consolation, any issues that arise will hopefully be patched.
On the other hand, yet another video still shows something else of more nostalgic beauty that even more fans may be happy about. The late inventory system "overhauling" in the early days of Diablo III, a system based on new principles not yet seen in the Diablo series, proved to most of the fan base to be very alien. At first, many, including myself, resigned to the fact that it was a changing game and just maybe this new system would be really fun and dynamic once we got our hands on it at release.
Things have changed, it would seem.
The backpack has digressed (perhaps not in a negative way) back to the system of old in the form of a 5x8 (40-space) grid, which, like previous games, will presumtuiously work just as the old tetris-styled system (as many fans have labeled it). Now, if everyone now approves of this return to the basics is yet to be seen, as some have stated a previously-happy transition from the sometimes-annoying game of "fit the square peg in to the round hole" when dealing with larger items or little space.
All the credit for these two images and finds goes to biff exploder who discovered both of these in this post. If you seem him, give him a positive reputation point if you have the moment. I would say this is pretty interesting news.
umm... lol i dont like the mf shrine idea, as if i have to hurry up to go kill the boss in order to get the max mf possible. hopefully it lasts very long

Working with adobe and/or java is like pushing a paper clip against a building and expecting it to move...
Yay at the inventory! While the one item takes one spot formula works for MMO's, it doesn't seem right in an action-rpg, especially when it's been a staple in the other two games.
That would be like removing peons from Warcraft 4.
I was just warming up to the tabbed inventory system. Once again, we see the impermanence of features during the development cycle. At least it won't feel utterly alien.
One other thing about the inventory is that the space that was previously empty (at least as of Blizzcast #8 screenshots) directly across from the 'Talisman' slot now has something in it. Curious to say the least.
Edit: Also there appears to be an additional slot. Previously we had: 2 Weapon/Shield. 1 Belt. 1 Body. 1 Helm. 1 Shoulder. 1 Amulet. 2 Rings. 1 Pants. 1 Boot. 1 Glove. Not counting the new Talisman and Other feature. However this new system appears to have 13 instead of 12 equip slots. The right slot directly across from the equipped gloves.
Unless its a useless slot taken up by the gloves as well, which seems a bit wasteful from a design perspective, it could be an additional item type. Pure speculation on my part, but I thought interesting nonetheless.
It will most likely be a slot for bracers. I highly doubt they would make us equip one glove at a time, especially considering the boots aren't designed this way.

I guess it could be nice to have some huge MF boost from shrines.. I hope not from items this time.. it went over board in D2 with people being equipped partly in blue gear in order to get 1% more MF.
About the tetris inventory,.. maybe the old one was just a placeholder or they were testing which type of inventory works best.. might be that now they are testing the tetris inventory.. maybe it isn't permanent. Anyways I don't really care what type of inventory it will be.. the game looks awesome!

Or hopefully, this time there is no need to kill the bosses only the get good drops. Just any monster if high enough level should be able to drop good loot at same chances. Of course some minor bosses could have a tad higher but not like D2.. and major quest bosses of course when you kill them first time.(but this time they should fix the glitch that is in D2)
5x8 is 40, not 20. At least the inventory is bigger if they are going to include Tetris.
I think MF would work best if bosses had set loot drops, as opposed to smalll chances for excellent loot. If they had a set list of yellow items that dropped, and they were all of the same quality (with different stats for different classes of course), then it wouldn't matter if you rushed to the boss before your MF shrine ran out as you would get the same quality item no matter what. If this were the case MF would obviously still have a place for getting drops while fighting regular monsters and possibly opening chests.
When you scroll over an item it compares the item to the one you have equipped. Well I am sure you all have but it raises the question, how do you know what is on the item? In D2 we had to identify items, are they throwing the identification system out the window or is it possible it will take a more 'lore' based approach like Bauldurs Gate?
Also it looked like the shields and such only took up 2 spots instead of 4-8 on the grid. This could me carrying more overall which would still allow them to cap carrying capacity to weight, with more allowable due to strength or some other stat.
The grid system is very unique to the Diablo series and I am glad it is making an appearance again. No grid systems work like in Bauldurs Gate (1&2) but the emphasis on those games is not so much killing things and looking for items (Magic Finding.) Even if they have a killer story that takes hours to complete the replay ability of Diablo games comes in magic finding, which I personally think the grid system works quite well for.
Ugh! I hate that there's all this news before BlizzCon. It's making me feel like there's going to be nothing new when I've been waiting so long. I've literally been blocking all the pictures, screenshots, and videos with my hand. I wanted it to be news with BlizzCon..
The only thing I liked about the old tetris system was that the items were in higher detail than other mmos that used the one-item-one-square system. Otherwise, I found it to be little more than a nuisance, having to constantly re-adjust crap to get more items in. Now, if they put in some sort of auto-arrange button (I've played a few games with tetris inventories that had such a button), that would be nice.

I LOVE how they have the DPS of a weapon listed on its popup, as well as a more specific description of its speed (swings per second rather than the vague Normal, Fast, Very Fast, etc.).
MF shrines sounds like a really, really stupid idea, I have to say... its still better than MF equipement, but I can't wait to have people stop at a boss and say "FIND A MF SHRINE BEFORE WE FIGHT THE BOSS" or some silly stupidity like that.
I like Tetris inventory but.. I don't know. This or WoW slots don't matter much to me. Tetris style makes it more immersive in my opinion. And I don't want a freakin' auto arrange that screw your organization all over everytime, but I do want a system that can move items a bit to make room for another one, if logically possible.
My only problem right now? WAY TOO FREAKIN' SMALL.
 Especially considering he might be using a backpack, and I don't see it going much larger (and how? more "pages" of inventory? Not as fun). In such a case, I'd rather have the WoW-based system.

And I'm loving that new Inventory!
Awesome! With half the stats bonuses of the pair, when you wear only 1 glove!
