PCGamer recently had a chance to gets some more hands-on time with Diablo 3 and chat with Jay Wilson about the game. Nothing too incredibly new in this particular interview, but it does have some interesting comments from Wilson about the game such as referencing God of War when designing the Monk and the following statement about dueling:
Official Blizzard Quote:
"It [dueling] was tacked on, a button that you'd just enable. We'd like to give it a bit more thought than that. We'd like to serve that community, and put real time and effort into making it much more than an afterthought."
He also went on to say some more in regards to the overall tone of Diablo 3 which really shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody who's been playing Blizzard's games over the years:
Official Blizzard Quote:
"Players have a memory of Diablo as very serious, very dark, and very straight. But Diablo was full of humour that took the edge off that seriousness. That's our goal today. We're not going to be silly as World of Warcraft. We're not going to put any of our characters in a hand-made rocket car. Having said that, I don't think any licence lives in one note. This is a big world that our players are going to live in, maybe for years. It's got to have more than just a serious tone."
For more of their hands-on thoughts along with additional comments by Jay Wilson, you can read the full article here.
First off, the link doesn't seem to be working for me.
I really like that they want to implement humour, but I just hope they won't overdo it. D2 had a number of moments which broke the tense atmosphere. At least acts 1-3 did. Beautiful lines such as "Gheed is a pig" and "Why don't you people just leave me alone" still make me smile.
Were you going to have an interview with Mr. Wilson too?
We may, it all depends on who Blizzard thinks would be best suited to respond to our variety of interview questions. We'll keep you guys posted as soon as we know something more!
Shatterer, I just checked the link and it's working fine. Maybe try again or try loading it in a different browser.
Yea im not sure what humor he was talking about either, there wasnt much of it except farnham and even then his story was depressing.

I found humor in D1 and D2. Why not put a little in D3 as well?

Anybody here read the Hellboy comics? If you don't, they have a very slight sprinkling of rather dark or sarcastic humor, but it's never overdone. It's the kind of humor that can bring a grim smile to your face
I think there will be options for humor in the "hirelings" you get in D3, which seem to be watered down pet class tagalong guys who lives are measured in ticks of the second hand God bless, little guys!
Anyway, i guess my vague point is, Dark humor is good, i have nothing against it. Keep the humor as dark as the game and life will be one big grooooooove
I'm quite shocked why so many people see no humour in these games. To name a few moments:
Farnham: "you drink water?"
Ogden: "We would never serve black mushrooms to our honoured guests!"
Warrior: "Yup, that's a cow alright"
Gheed (no quote needed)
Lysander: "Horazon's urinal? Oh Journal!"
Geglash (yeah...)
Even the Fallen family/fetishes are, what I consider to be, funny.
I'll stop now, but you can see that there are plenty of funny tidbits in those games. They aren't integrated in the main storyline, but that's not what Jay is implying.

It works for me now and still using the same browser. Maybe it was just a temporary downtime?
My favorites from farmhan were "Why don't that old crone do somethin' for a change. Sure, sure, she's got stuff, but you listen to me... she's unnatural. I ain't never seen her eat or drink - and you can't trust somebody who doesn't drink at least a little."

I agree, I think Jay's quote is being misconstrued. It's not like he said "D1 and D2 were a laugh riot from beginning to end." There are funny characters and moments though; as Kenzai just mentioned. I personally think that this is what Jay is referring to.
Maybe he just meant to say that not every single second of either game is completely grim, dark and foreboding....there are little morsels of humor here and there, which helps to break up things a bit. Honestly I think throwing in a little bit of humor here and there makes it more realistic and believable.

I couldn't have said it better. I like the dark humor.
Necromancer - And just as I was beginning to enjoy this darkness
That was actually a really great read. No new info, but the author is an excellent writer. And yet, every time I see 2011, I sigh as another piece of my soul withers away.
I'm still wondering how the Diablo 3 team is going to be able to reconcile it's high, fast-paced action approach with the serious nature of the game. I mean, action games like God of War are fun and all but who takes them seriously? I feel the same way about graphic novels. Sort of fun to read and marvel at the badassness of their plots and characters but also pretty laughable.
The Diablo series has always had a prominent action orientation to it but if it's as quick, in-your-face and flashy as a game like God of War I'm not sure a serious tone can be maintained.
Well im betting that whats going to happen is that with all the subquests were going to get theres going to be plenty of humor in some of them.
