A Battle.net user recently asked about whether deaths in Diablo 3 were hand-crafted or not and Bashiok had this to say:
"I think the videos Steel linked explain it pretty well. We do have both havok based and hand-crafted animations, and which of these is used is generally dependent on which monster it is. We have a few in there, like the skeletal summoner and grotesque, that have hand-made death animations and those will play through every time. But most monster death is determined by how they died. Was it a critical, was it a critical from a type of elemental damage, was a specific ability used that maybe kills them in a specific way, etc. etc."
And when a user asked the follow-up question, "can we hope for dismemberment in Diablo III?" Bashiok
"Does decapitation count?"
Yes, I believe it does. And having played Diablo 3, I do recall seeing quite a few heads a rollin'!
This is also a great way to promote using multiple skills. I know I will be trying to kill all monsters in every possible way to see all the animations. Add to this the ability to smash and toss around body parts and the possibilities are endless. How can you top infinite gore?
What about evisceration? Has any one seen this yet? Would be great on the thousand pounder or unburied.

That's actually possible on zombies. You can cut them in half and the torso keeps crawling at you. Crawling Torso is what it's called, and you can see it in the WWI demo.

Oh yeah, I do remember seeing that crawling torso. I guess I don't remember seeing the entrails, but they must have been there. I was thinking more of having the guts of a large monster spilling out on top of you as you cut them open.
Yay, nothing like decapitating some baddies to brighten your day. Didn't I also read something once about damage over time, like something loosing and arm, than another or partially developed monsters like a half developed thousand pounder? I'll have to look for that quote.
Bashiok: For boss fights we don't really want to just start throwing "damage decals" on them. It can very easily be too subtle if you're fighting a smaller boss or one that has odd geometry to it, and it can also end up that no matter the flavor, style, and cool look to a boss you just end up fighting a big gory mess.
Also we think that we can go a lot further than just simple decals and get something much cooler out of a boss fight. So what we hope to do for at least the bosses where it makes sense is to show more apparent and visually noticeable damage states. Instead of a blood splatter they may actually lose a limb, or a piece or armor, or - like the Thousand Pounder - may transform in some dramatic way changing how the fight progresses. We want to go a lot further than just showing sword slashes and instead use dramatic and noticeable (which can be difficult in a game like this) ways to indicate a boss' current state.
Speaking of battle damage though, and I don't think this came across in the gameplay video or any of the screenshots as of yet, but when an enemy dies a critical death it actually drenches your hero in blood if you're within proximity of the spray. It's awesome.
I'm hoping that the blood, gore and bones hangs around the ground for longer than is shown in the game play videos. The fact that it dissapears after a few seconds is lame. That is my sole complaint so far, liking everything else combat wise. Edit: Also lol @ a few months ago when people were paranoid about whether Diablo III was going to have a Teen Rating or not.

I know they addressed this already since people mentioned it after the gameplay demo was show. I'm pretty sure Bashiok or Jay or one of them said that they were going to make it so the models stay longer. I guess a part of that had to do with keeping specs low.

How awesome would it be if this were so in Diablo II. Playing an Assassin would be so dope. And not to mention seeing Whirlwind in action; with a maul!

They already stay for a long time now. Check out the recent vids from the archivist class, the lorenado killed one at beginning and corpses stayed for whole 30s clip and the entire time they were getting dragged around by the lorenados

Last I heard bodies will have a capacity. Like 40 bodies on the screen and when you leave the screen they disappear, but if you want to stay and look at them all you can.
Bashiok: First, touching on the corpse fade timers as they stand, the tech to have them last longer has been in for a while. Pretty much how it's working is that there's an allowed number of physics "actors" that are allowed to remain at a time. These actors could be corpses, but they can also be pieces of destroyed tables, or railings, etc. anything that relies on physics. These are corpses and destructables generally. As you 'create' physics actors the oldest ones disappear. So as you're fighting there are always a number of actors remaining in the world, and it works out pretty well. Obviously how many of them can remain at one time will come down to final performance tweaking, but right now I believe it's around twenty.
On to blood and fading; the "cost" of decals, which include the blood stains, are fairly high. Cost being the relative strain put on the machine running the game. Decals account for blood, but they also account for quite a few other effects, most of which haven't yet been revealed. In the potential case of a full party creating these decals, blood flowing from creatures, skills that create them, as well as monsters themselves using skills that create them (Wretched vomiting all over the place is a good example), there is the potential to have a large number of decals on screen at any one time. So again, it's going to come down to final performance tweaks as to how many of them will remain on screen and for how long.

I bet people will still be seeing new death animations even after months of playing the game with this type of system.
Now, when will they release a real update on the Diablo III site?
