I dont know what Keith Lee is talking about d2 was not all dungeons there are plenty of out doors environment and it still feels like a diablo game
"We want to bring as much variety as we can when you’re playing the game"
DIABLO 2 LOD has variety right here... act 1 every thing till Monastery Gatewere mostly out side plenty of out doors to contrast to the caves environment.... act 2 most quest were done in dungeons but still you travel a lot out doors and its pretty bright outside and they still manage to make it look "dark" act 3 you travel through thick lush green jungle...till like Lower kurast they still manage to get the dark creepy fell as your are on your way towards Mephisto act 4 this is pretty dark and gray but it should be like that your about to go kill Diablo... act 5 your going through WHITE SNOWY area for the most part........ whats more bright than WHITE...... and you don’t see snow in any other act un less your using some spells but that’s not environment
you can have colorful environment and have contrast and still make it look like Diablo but how they have it right now for d3 is CRAP I am sorry I dont know why blizzard cant see that. Blizzard choice of color and contrast is all wrong for the game of diablo. Blizzard have to go backand look through some baroque art to figure out some of color contrast that is needed. If you look thought art from baroque period you can see lots of contrast with very DARK AND BRIGHT colors with lot of fell for the dark that is the kind of thing that I think needs to happen to Diablo.
and to the " It’s a stylized feel and in that sense, it’s very sort of a Blizzard philosophy."
if that’s blizzard’s philosophy then in that case every game you make will look the same bright colorful with no sense of light with you wowes cartoon look.... and as a diablo fan I cant except that I am not saying you cant go all artistic and stylized diablo all I am saying is that you do it in a way that will not change the Diablo’s look and feel. Which in my opinion has changed a lot in d3 and I don’t mind change but change should be for the good not to turn some thing good to crap…
I really hop blizzard listen to the TRUE DIABLO FANES
I think people needs to open their mind a little bit. "ITS CARTOONISH". <-- WTF are you talking about!!!! Go get some lessons about art and you will notice it's nothing about Cartoons.
Sorry but I can't remember seeing something look like this in the video.
What people SHOULD say is that graphic approach CHANGED. Of course it changed, nobody can deny that. You may like it or not, it still NO DAMN CARTOON.
Personaly I think it's just fine how it is. dungeons may look a little bit more "dirty" but I think the color are just perfect
what we mean or at least me is that it looks way to colorful with random bright color in your face with it simple unrealistic look and the color. The photo you have shows is anime which is what wow is in video game way which is very lacking in detail with its own sense of realism.
What is he talking about....... Did he read the petition? I bet no. Coz he didn't mention about anything else, just the colours, which suck.
I updated the first post for those who missed it. If you visit the article and read thoroughfully, this was said the same day the game was announced.
Obviously, there was no way for him to know there was a petition or various petitions online at the moment. Nevertheless, I submited today a link to the survey thread I opened a few days ago. And got response. It was received.
i almost feel exhuasted with this subject. at first i just wanted to yell with spit flying out of my mouth at the poeple who would fall in line with that petition. after a while i felt like i should just sit back and let THEM run out of mana blizzard has already said there were numerous art direction before the one we see in the gameplay and they also said NOTHING is final and no blizzard game has ever looked like the beta. maybe you guys should go put on some more eye liner, all the crying is making it run. little emo boys.
i hope the guy who started the "change everything" petition get so angry when blizzard releases the final product (becuase we know they wont change the way HE wants them too ) that he doesnt even buy the game. That would make the would of sancuary a better place
If this whole petition/movement wasn't a bunch of caffeine-addled crybabies maybe Blizz would take some input seriously? It just sounds like angry 14 year old girls instead of good constructive criticism.
FFS, I thought the acne-ridden nerds who played the first two were now young professionals...........Look how wrong I was.................
LOL you can't be serious. This isn't a protest. Diablo 3 is a game. You don't have to buy it.
Its not "your" game. Blizz didn't sit down and design a game based on your wishlist.
When I go to a car dealership and tell a salesman I don't like the colour of a car, he should tell me to go fuck myself. I don't have to buy it. Someone else will.
*Edit* In short, if you don't like it, MYOFG (make your own fucking game)
Your argument is invalid, not to mention crude. Secondly, this game isn't just my game, it belongs to ever other member of the Diablo community and many of us are concerned about the game's current art direction. Blizzard was once a company that thrived on feedback, albeit they never disappointed before. Now, with a new staff working on Diablo III we have to remind them what the series is all about, since most of them only have a background with RTS based games like Starcraft or MMOs like World of Warcraft (which has obviously influenced the development of Diablo III in various aspects). In any case, we do have a right to express out concerns just as you have the right to make yourself look like an arrogant shmuck.
I'm sorry im not a member of your comic book club or whatever, but what I said is true and no length of this forum can wrong me.
Don't like it? Don't buy it.
You crossed the line between criticism and "my mom cooks me pizza pops" too long ago.
You're all going to buy it regardless of whether it looks good or not, and you're going to learn to like the graphics. I think the main problem right now is people scrutinizing over the only thing they have access to at the moment: Videos and screen shots. While I do agree that the random green and purple lighting needs to be removed as well as the light radius re-introduced, I don't believe a full overhaul is necessary.
I find the finest small details really put the icing on the cake, and those small fine tunings will not occur until much later in the production phase. I trust will make a good game, and they will take your feedback into consideration. If memory serves me right they mentioned during the WWI that they started from ground up with the graphics a few times before they felt that they "had it right". That's dedication folks. It will be time for worry when the gameplay sucks.
I'm not usually the forum-posting type, but I thought I'd add my opinion to this evergrowing argument.
Keith Lee certainly makes a good point in this interview: colour is our friend, and I was never one to disagree with that. The outdoor areas displayed look fantastic and real. Rainbows and sun do exist, and I see no harm in implementing such graphical features as long as it is balanced by the equally dark traits of an outdoors environment, and from many of the screenshots shown, that appears to be the case. That being said, I have seen many comparison pictures of outdoors enviroment screenshots being edited to adhere more to their Diablo routes and I certainly believe most of them to be an improvement. However at the moment I am content enough with the outdoors environments at the moment and believe it only requires a few changes.
My main concern with Diablo 3 would have to be the dungeons. I am the first to agree with Blizzard that you can still have a strong undertone of fear whilst using colour but also the first to argue that Blizzard have not successfully executed such a style. While dungeons now exhibiting shades of green, yellow, red and blue (especially blue) have the potential to look absolutely gorgeous and fitting, smooth walls with handpainted textures, smiling lion statues and an overall aura of cleanliness do not. This is not true to any other Diablo game, nor is it true to any real-life dungeons (or abandoned cathedrals inhabited by evil, for that matter :P). I hate to use this comparison, as it is a sickening abundancy throughout these forums, but it really does appear copied from World of Warcraft. Blizzard can certainly keep the colours, they look great! What I propose is that they work harder on maintaining a feel of grittiness and insecurity in the underground areas rather than continuing it down the path it has started on.
The last thing I wish to address is the character design: a lot of people disliked the Witch Doctor, claiming him not be nearly as impressive as the Necromancer. Aesthetically that may be true, the Necromancer certainly looked more fearsome and cool, but I stand by the conviction that the Witch Doctor was not a bad choice to have made. The frailty and almost arthritic shakiness of the characters animation impresses me, and I am glad that Blizzard chose to sink to a more subtle and disturbing character, who despite his fragile appearance holds a considerable amount of power.
The barbarian's appearance looks fine to me. It is not the barbarian itself that bothers me, but rather it's overly-cumbersome armour. Those massive shoulder plates do not appeal to me, and - as I stated earlier - certainly appear to be a nod towards certain other Blizzard franchises. I'm not saying there should be no large shoulder plates (in fact it looks magnificent on the barb concept art) just that it should be toned down slightly in favour of something more subtle and fearsome. At the moment - particularly on the female barbarian - it looks too bulky and comical.
All of the above being said, please don't assume that I, or anyone else arguing for a renewed artistic direction, is disappointed with Blizzard. I, and I'm sure most people, was absolutely impressed with the gameplay video and could not be more happy to finally see a continuation of such a great series. If the graphics are not changed it will definitely not stop me from buying the game, I am merely suggesting change in the one area that I believe there needs to be change. I signed the petition not because I wish to whine or was disappointed with Blizzard, but because I believe if Blizzard responds to this criticism and re-evaluate their artistic direction it could truly benefit from doing so.
If this whole petition/movement wasn't a bunch of caffeine-addled crybabies maybe Blizz would take some input seriously? It just sounds like angry 14 year old girls instead of good constructive criticism.

With comments like that, it's hard to see how you're any more credible than them.
I posted this on the main DIII forums as well. One more opinion to the pile.
At first glance of the new graphics engine, I was too blinded by the fact that I was actually watching D3 to think about what I was looking at. After watching it more, I realized how much it looks like WoW and how not creepy it was at all.
In my early days of diablo, I remember not wanting to go into certain areas because of the fact that they were dark and scary. That's what was always so cool about diablo. It's so gothic and dark. It really pulls you into the heaven/hell concept well. Seeing demons in blue-lit dungeons that show every nook and cranny doesn't impress me much. The design team should be looking at more horror games like silent hill for inspiration. I want to be scared to go around corners (until I get at least 180 hours into the game of course). =)
Anyways, here is my somewhat quick try at an edit of a D3 screen shot. I'm all on board with you guys. I tried to do minimal sharpening/grain addition but keep it as natural as possible.
looks like WoW? what the hell are you all blabbing about.
you think by getting the game darker, it will not look too, how do most people here say, WoWish...
cmon.
plus, cant see shit on the right image.
The fans have a right to have a concern about the way the game looks. It is a pretty dark rendition, I know. I was trying to capture the feel you have in the Durance of Hate or other dungeons. We're all trying to voice our opinions the best we can to help blizzard get the best end result that we feel stays true to the series.

omg u have your gamma set so far down you cant see anything... since when was trav that dark? looks like you've edited the picture and blacked out the edges
slipperyninja - it usually looks like ...
i'm very surprised by your post ...
since when you got theese dungeons brighter ?
- well - if you got a better light radius , or rise up your brightnes - yes could be - but - this is normal look of the things in D2. ( except desert on act 2 and act 5 )

I was going to say the same thing, I was just in Trav last night and it was by no means that dark on my screen. I was actually able to see the entire area!! There was a post on Battle.net D3 discussion that shows the so called "gothic" feel of Diablo 2.
Looks freaking sweet! Come on guys! Stop complaining about such small thing like colors! This is it! the GREATEST HACK"N SLASH RPG ever made! It has to move on just like other games out there!
