I don't die often either but all this is stupid. You know what people do on bnet? They quit and reenter the game to get their corpse back then someone tp them and they're back on their feet before they even know it. I prefer having to suffer higher penalties as long as they keep the pace of the game fast. Besides it's likely that you won't be able to cast tp while fighting monsters so those checkpoints are indeed going to be important to keep the pace fast.
Hmmm... you're right. I really didn't take that trick into consideration, sorry. I was thinking of single player where the game ends when you leave it, while in Battle.net, even if you leave and right after that enter the game again, you will most of the times succeed in getting in before the game closes. So yeah... that really is a flaw. Though I still prefer having that kind of interactive penalty, and not some stupid thing like percentage reduction to health and mana (Like in Guild Wars).

Nope. The game doesn't end in single player either - your corpse just appears in town the next time you enter.
Yeah but when you reenter you have to start everything from scratch that's where they get you.
Yeah but it's not that bad. The same thing happens on the realms too. I normally die from a Maphy run before the game becomes perm. It's faster to enter two games in a row and attempt a run than wait for a game to become perm and then try and fail.
Good or bad new "death mechanics" we later know this, but absence necessary penalty from the death is No good...
Followers.. Possibly can it will be they be hired not one? More interesting? sure!

There was a MUD I played where if you died you were sent to nether world, where you had to sense/find your souls, good and evil part of them. When you merged with them your exp loss was cut down severly and you were sent back to the world.
I think this type of approach could be nice for softcore, you either spend some time finding the souls or lose a lot more exp. The nether world could also be visually entertaining.. you could find some old heroes lost souls there etc.

Now that's what I mean when I say "Interactive Penalty". To be honset what akse said reminds of the FPS game "Prey", where you have a few seconds to strike souls (Red ones for Health and Blue ones for Energy) when you die and when the time's up, you are sent back to the normal world with as much health and mana that you managed to catch... although the feature was executed horribly in that game... there is alot of room for improvements in that concept.
But on the other hand... the problem is that Diablo's universe do not support the concept of "Afterlife", "Realm of the dead" or that kind of stuff. Plus I think that a minigame like that could get boring in time if it doesn't vary.

so you guys bitch about Diablo taking some things from WoW, but if they take it from a horrible game you would be excited?
I'd much rather have Diablo III take a few skills from WoW. For god's sake, most of the skills on WoW are roughly based on lots of Diablo II skills anyways.

hypocrites
What are you talking? I was never bitching around about taking stuff from WoW... I just personally think that death panelty in WoW is a not-so-good one. So far, from what we already know, Diablo 3 has yet to take anything from WoW except from the art style. Everything they took so far was actually from the previous games of diablo so please stop bitching about the bitches...
I like the death penalty in Guild Wars. Each you died, you incurred a Death Penalty which lowers your maximum hp by percentages (15%,30%,45% and 60%, with 60% being the highest). You removed this penalty by killing monsters that give EXP at your level or simply get experience points from quests, etc. I think this would be a fair penalty rather than taxing the player with gold and loss of exp.

I remember that from Prey! That was so cool and innovative. Especially with the idea that you return with the amount of health and mana you earned to keep from your "death experience". I really think they could so something with that. But yeah it'd have to be something that doesn't get too boring.
- Like walking down a very dark hallway and avoiding apparitions, I don't know.
- How about simply becoming an invisible (or slightly visible) specter after death, I'm not sure what you could possibly do afterwards besides float around but it leaves room for ideas.
- Or maybe see the course of your death in slow motion, just so you can feel bad. xD
well... i become a "die hard" player thanks to Diablo II... lose XP really hurts! but still i'm gonna miss that.
maybe "don't gain any xp for X minutes" it's a good idea???
i hope we don't have the "WoW rezz penalty" i hate that in a slow-game like WoW... Diablo III will be unplayable with that.
Wilson: It's a horrible thing, death. So many youngsters these days becoming obsessed with it. So I decided to make them all feel better about it by utilisilidizing after...life. Can you say that with me kids?
Kids & M.Jackson: Af..ter...liife. Yheaayy!
Interviewer: Why Jay, that's briliant. It's also community friendly. Just like all the other things you've done with this project so far.
Wilson: Thank you, I try. It's important that this game attracts as large a population as possible. Kids from 7 to 77 should all be allowed to enjoy it.
Interviewer: Why, that's pure genius at it's best, sir. Might I ask what is the next thing you plan to do?
Wilson: Well, I didn't want to reveal this yet, but I plan on making a secret level vortex inside the game that will allow you to enter the land of Wilsonia. Land of everlasting joy and merrymaking. A place where undead creatures and cute little unicorns can play together in the sunny dungeons. And best of all, if you buy the game, you get to enter Wilsonia for free!
M.Jackson: Yeeaayyy. Freee!
Wilson: I'm off to the nearest homeless shelter to bring some rainbow into the hearts of the unfortunate.
Interviewer: There you have it. Words of J.W. Founder of Wilsonology and god-king ruler of Wilsonia.
No disrespect, it's just a little prank. Not trying to be a jackass, but it seems we have different opinions.

The Barbarian is from Arreat, a very cold snowy mountain top, but they are much tougher than normal humans, so they don't need warmth.

Where are Barbarians originally from? Sumeria, or more specifically Mesopotamia, AKA Europe. Think the Alps and the Pyrenees
Epic quotes... all of them

Not liking that.
It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
make it happen blizzard!
