Bashiok talks his view on PK and cooperative PvP play in Diablo III.
We're - in general - not big fans of griefing for any game. It's really only "fun" for one person, and that definition of fun isn't generally something we're going to want to encourage. It's far more positive to encourage and support meaningful and skillful options and systems within a game, than a mechanic for people to instantly turn against one another for no meaningful gameplay reasons.
I definitely remember running with my friends, and someone toggles it, and bam everyone is dead and your one friend is laughing. Ok, ok, good joke I guess, and then you run back and *bam*, you've toggled it to get them back. After a while everyone usually agrees to a truce because it's just a waste of time. But I also remember running with random players and losing extremely nice items because of it, not cool. I'm sure that it was a feature that was right up some people's alleys, I won't deny there are some that would enjoy nothing more than to see others frustrated, but is that truly something that should be encouraged through design - if not directly opposed?
We have a large focus on cooperative play for Diablo III, and the mechanics and design decisions related to multiplayer are likely going to be based on supporting and encouraging it as much as possible, and not breaking it down.
That doesn't mean that PvP won't have its own focus, but those are details and features we aren't yet discussing.
Maybe changing the PK or PvP system...like players agreeing to fight each other. Don't quote me on this cuz I haven't played WoW but I think thats how it works in WoW right? Maybe a PK game in "Create game options"?
But I totally agree with losing items and getting frustrated with some random dude killing everyone.
I really hope they re look this.
If they eliminate the option or ability to join a game and kill someone regardless of their opinion then I am gonna be very very sad with Diablo 3. One of the prime things about Diablo that I felt put it apart from other games is the fact you had the ability to make your own decision and you could hunt people down and kill them.
Very least they can do is make an option for your character to always be in pvp mode or something, it wont be the same but it will be better then horrible WoW PVP.
They pussify PVP in Diablo and I know ALOT of people are gonna be pissed so they better look into the game more then just a coop game.
PK'ing and Dueling are essential parts of Diablo, Especially in HC where I played. It adds a certain fear and adrenaline rush to the game and keeps you on your toes... I don't think the Diablo I style PK'ing should be brought back, but definately keep the D2 style. I don't think the game would be fun for so long without the PK and "PKK's" out there. Its a whole other element and it was always one of the things that kept my heart beating fast. Don't take that away. It was fair enough to give people a chance in d2 and it should remain that way.

HC mode think the one thing that made this game fun is to be able to build a Char that can be COMBATIVE to almost any PK that might join the game that is what made it Exicting to play the game. Keeps the game fun an makes Newbs step their game up. PVP--PK all the way.. Maybe i would still play WoW if they had a HC mode but they dont get killed put another quarter in an keep playing.
i was noticing with the gameplay video that most of the pathways are vesy narrow, imagine having 8 playing doing a quest in those dungeons, it would be like maggot lair throught the entire act. lets all form a line folks.
if you look at what the game is about, then it doesn't make sense to remove PK'ing. Sure as an actual game-mechanic it's not always very nice and fun to experience (depending on which end of the stick you are though), but last time I checked, you're fighting hordes of demons and stuff that's crawling out of hell. So it's not a "nice" world; it would feel wrong not being able to kill someone, just because you feel like it...
on the other hand obviously, they should find a way where it's annoying that you get killed, but it's not like you would lose stuff you've been working for, or at least not for consecutive kills. Let's say you would lose XP as a percentage based on your level, they could make it so you would lose that the first 3 times, but after that, within a given time, the penalty is removed, since there's obviously something else going on.
Anyway, I hope it's in there, I'm not a big fan of PVP in Diablo2 or any game for that matter, but it takes the game to a whole other level, if you can get killed anytime, and I personally enjoy it =)
Too early to speculate, we will have to wait until Blizzard shows what new ideas they have. Maybe they device a new system or measures to benefit that range of players who enjoy PvP in a way that won't grief or disappoint other type of players.
Fact in Diablo 3 everyone will have their own separate drops totally eliminates half the argument right there. People are crying because they lose items well duh you die so what, not like the other player can grab your items when he can't even see them because they are assigned to you.
Other half is its frustrating.. yea so is sitting there hearing a kid talk alot of smack and not having the ability to just say "You know what, you talk alot of smack now im gonna hunt you down and kill you and shut you up" PvP is what MADE Diablo 1 and 2 for me. It adds a realism that no other game brings. The PvP in Diablo is so much more then just dueling its unlike any other game out there.
The only reason I've played the Diablo series for so long is for PvP... Monsters are hard at first but when you own them, what do you have left besides other people? At least they can put up an equal fight and keep you on top your game more than PvM. This game is pretty much based on PvP to a LOT of people. I hope they have PvP channels and games where you can edit like crazy. Like.. go to a 2 vs 2 barbs only game, or 5 vs 5 with 1 of each class and edit what lvl characters can join. Or even a PvP ranking or PvP ladder so you can see how you rank vs other duelers... I hope they put a LOT of effort into setting up the PvP components.
HC = Hardcore. dont complain about ur "XX" hours like a little girl. you knew what it was before u started ur chars... its part of the game and it what made it so great. i hope it continues. and no people dont always deserve it, but whatever can go wrong...
I think it would be cool if they had a tab on the Diablo 3 Battle.net menu that would allow you to join a PvP game, similar to the way the WOW battlegrounds are.
I hated PK. I got screwed several times with my sorceress and amazon alike. Does anyone remember how hard it is to get Windforce to drop if you are playing the game without cheating? My friends and I quit playing in unsecured games because of PK nuts that would come in (with a hack), kill people and steal their items, or kill them and ruin their quests - just to feel like they were better than everyone else.
I finally quit bnet, though it was well after all my friends had left for other game servers. They got tired of the crap with PK, hacks, bots, and the overall rudeness of the general population. If they are going to allow pvp, they need to keep the PK people away from those who want nothing to do with it. It made battle.net a frustrating experience rather than a fun one.
They need a seperate place forPvP are being able to like have somethin whe re you can turn PvP off so they cant hostile you so ppl cant just come in hostile and kill ya.

They should make the PVP system, where you have to Create a game with PVP enabled in order to PVP. That would stop 100% of all TPPK and PK this and that. It would also be extremely easy to code and do.
I would be very suprised if this is not implented.
Pking is part of the game to me, if it's removed Diablo won't be the same. But, I think it should be restricted to a small degree. They should just make it where pkers have to face some kind of consequences for their actions, but still allow them to PK. Like make Pkers hunted or something, They should have bounty hunters or Player Killer Killers PKK!
As far as traditional PvP goes I hope it is greatly expanded compared to D2, but also keeps it roots to a degree. For example, structured PvP with team play and what not that has a ranking system (arenas), and then duel games like there are now that have really no rules and are just senseless killing

I love dueling, but I can't do it, cause of tppks.
