I already started reading birthright and to say that i was practically turned off by the beginning chapters, i stopped reading it... I'm assuming it gets better near the end or maybe the others in the series do.
what are the best books in your opinions in the whole collection of them? I wanted to read Legacy of Blood but didn't want to read it being off on the chronological time ordeal..
A lot of the books start slow. But especially Birthright picks up a lot. You will be in shock at the things you learn from it. I advise you to continue reading.
But my personal favorite is Kingdom of Shadow. That one starts off slow at all but has an awesome ending and is great as a whole.

I actually just started Birthright a few days ago. I was really into it after the first chapter or two. There wasn't much interesting as far as plot is concerned but I guess I just like how it's written. How far did you read before you gave up on it? There's a bit more action starting in chapters 4 and 5.
It''s been interesting reading so far since I haven't read a fantasy book in about 11 years. I think I'll probably read the rest of the Diablo books in the next couple months and maybe even check out some of Knaak's contributions to the Dragon Lance series.

Probably the third chapter. I was also pretty confused about what was going on.
The Sin War Trilogy were my least favorite. Legacy of Blood is easily the best, The Black Road second best. I didn't like Kingdom of Shadow very much. It just was kind of boring. I mean, they're all a little boring, but that one especially. I haven't read the spider one yet.
I thought it was pretty unfortunate, really. Ureh is supposed to be one of the most fascinating locations in Sanctuary. It is to me anyway, but everything that was happening in and around it in the book was hardly interesting at all.
I thought MotS was by far the best, but I'm biased towards it for being the 'newest' one chronologically, meaning it gives us the most information about where the lore / world of Sanctuary is heading in D3. I do think it was also the most interesting in general, the most well-written, which no offense to Knaak, is saying a lot.
So what is some basic knowledge I need to know for reading birthright? Or what I should say, some clarification on everything in the beginning.
Sure, I'm only like 6 or 7 chapters in so I guess I'm less likely to give any huge spoilers for the first 3 on accident.
A run down of characters and places in the first few chapters:
[spoil]
Seram- a small rural town, Uldyssian and Mendeln live at a farm nearby Kehjan-the region that the book starts in, also the name of the region's main city-state Uldyssian- A farmer who lost his parents and all but one sibling due to a plague. He has since become disillusioned with religion and mostly just values practical information and tools. Mendeln- Uldyssian's one surviving relative and younger brother. He is more interested in studying things than a farmer's life. He spends much of his time with Cyrus. Diomedes-Not an actual character, but mentioned often as Uldyssian and Mendeln's dead father. Serenthia- Cyrus's daughter. She's quite a bit younger than Uldyssian but has strong feelings for him, though he sees her more as a younger sister than an eligable woman. Cyrus- Runs the main shop in Seram. Achilios-A local hunter/archer. He is a good friend of Uldyssian and Mendeln. He loves Serenthia but as mentioned, she is more interested in Uldyssian. Lylia-A somewhat mysterious, beautiful noblewoman that appeared in town. She has done some odd things like disappearing randomly and calming Uldyssian's horse that normally bites anyone but him. She seems to sweet talk Uldyssian and he quickly falls for her. Dorius-Seram's leader(basically mayor) Tiberius-Seram's gaurd captain(basically top local cop) Cathedral of Light-A growing religious group, sent a missionary to Seram Temple of the Triune- Another religious group that competes with the Cathedral. They worship Bala, Mephis and Dialon and use triangles/things grouped in 3s as a theme. They sent 3 missionaries to Seram, although one seems to be missing when Uldyssian first sees them at Cyrus's shop. Brother Caligio- The missing preist from the Triune Brother Mikelius- Master Inquisitor from the Cathedral of Light (acts as judge, jury and executioner)

Summary of Chapter 1:
[spoil]Chapter one:Uldyssian argues with the Cathedral of Light's missionary while at the Boar's Head(Seram's tavern). He then sees the Triune's 2 missionaries at Cyrus's shop. He then meets a beautiful blond noblewoman, Lylia, who seems a bit odd/mysterious. [/spoil]
Chapter 2:
[spoil]
Mendeln goes into the woods with Achilios to see an ominous stone Achilios found. The rock is black with markings in it that Mendeln can't understand. When touching the stone, Achilios is reminded of death while Mendeln blanks out for a moment. While Uldyssian is looking for Mendeln, a strong storm begins to brew and Uldyssian sees Lylia walking into the woods. He feels compelled to follow and protect her but once he catches up to her in the woods she spots the badly butchered body of Caligio, the missing Triune missionary. Lylia feighnts and Uldyssian takes her back to the inn. He meets up with Mendeln and Achilios on the way and tells them to report the dead body. After getting Lylia to a room in the inn, Uldyssian is confronted by Tiberious and the two other Triune missionaries who accuse him of murder. He denies murdering Caligio but then finds out they were unaware of Caligio's body and are accusing Uldyssian of killing the missionary from the Cathedral of Light. Uldyssian is being accused because he had been seen arguing with the man in Chapter One and his knife was found in the body. [/spoil]
Chapter 3:
[spoil]
Dorius sends word to the Cathedral and Triune about the deaths. Uldyssian is in the town gaurdhouse's jail. At one point the door to his cell seems to open itself but he doesn't attempt to run. Lylia visits Uldyssian and reveals that her family was accused of violence that the competing Cathedral and Triune were responsible for. Her parents were taken away, brother put in a dungeon and sister unwillingly married off. She says similar things will likely happen to Uldyssian if he doesn't escape. Serenthia sees Lylia leaving and is jealous of her increasing closeness to Uldyssian. Mikelius and several other armed men from the Cathedral show up demanding justice for the death of their missionary. They assume Uldyssian in guilty and show no interest in any sort of trial. At the end of the chapter Achilios and Serenthia show them to the graves of the two dead missionaries. Mikelius says the grave and body has been desecrated[/spoil]
i like the kingdom of shadow and moon of the spider the best. but all the books are good. birthright is just the first of three books so it will be slow at first.

My life is like a dragon, first praised, then hated, now lost.
No problem, if anything it's always good to recap. I had forgotten who was town guard and who was the leader. I don't know yet if they'll have a returning role in the book but it was nice to look back and double check.

I'd say if you must just skip to the last... 5 chapters of the book. That's where it gets real good. And if you don't know something wiki it.
