I've just watched the World Lore and Environment Art panel video avaible in high def here (the file is huge and it took forever to download) and around 4:00 Leonard Boyarsky starts talking about the areas we won't see in D3 which are use to create a background for new classes and he uses Skovos as an example.
I think it was said previously that Skovos would be one of the new areas we would explore in D3 but that somewhat kills it.
Anyway from what I gathered from this video, Skovos is an Island where a secluded society known as the Iskari lives (not sure of spelling). This society was apparently built by an Angel and her lover who is actually human and they are also the ancestors of both the Rogues and the Amazon.
Here's some artworks of Skovos
Anyone else has a feeling that the next ranger class will have some Greek influences
I think I have a good name for a male ranger coming from over there.
Myrmadions would be a warrior class... Hunters would fit, but they couldn't get it past the WoW haters, so something inspired, but not taken from, Greek mythos. Atlanta and Apollo were both Greek gods who fought with bows.
Skovos, I believe is the capital of the Amazon Islands (which have since been renamed the Skovos Islands). And since it is an Amazon locale, only the woman from there would be warriors. The males assume governmental roles.
While Hoplite, Myrmadon type classes could still exist, I do not think you get a female version, that is kind of what an amazon is. But this is Diablo not earth (in history) so a female Myrmadon could be possible, but probably not as a playable class since it has been said the Barbarian is the only class to return as a playable class. The Amazon or a character that resembles or is reminiscent of the Amazon from D2 may appear as an NPC or an enemy.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
What if it's not the ranged class. It could be something more of a Gladiator, or a monster slaying hero like hercules or Theseus or Perseus or Achiles. It would probably be a good place for the shield user to come in (think 300). Only problem is, the males don't fight in skovos, they leave that to the women. That said, it could be Gladiator, a criminal, then the whole gender issue would be solved. The only problem with that would be making sure that this brawler didn't muscle in on the Barbarian's territory.
He would have to be a warrior specialized towards something else... like the paliden was to support. Maybe like a warrior-magic-monk type of deal, but that really doesn't fit in with the Greek think, maybe acolytyes (spelling)

I know Skovos is an Amazon Island but the way Leonard was talking about it, it seems to be populated by those Iskaris which are actually the ancestors of the Amazons and not the Amazons themselves.
Also it is not clear if the warriors in their society are exclusively female, so there's still place for a male warrior.
I think the Myrmidon class sounds both original and awesome, it could be a mix up of javelins/spears and bows like the Amazon but in a different way of course.
Wait, oh no there are already Myrmidons in WC3, lol what's with Blizzard and WC...

actually from what i remember the major goddess that had a bow was Artemis, the Goddess of the Hunt.
They may get some small elements from ancient Greece in matters architecture but i really doubt they'll get much more. It would look too similar to Titan Quest and Loki that has the exact same setting. Doing that would really be a disaster.
also, if they bring back a class from the Skovos islands, that most likely will be the amazons, so no need to think of myrmidons or something like it

If you are talking about the Amazon culture then it is clear. Very clear. If you are talking about the Iskari, then it is up for interpretation.
Quote from name="Arreat Summit/D2 Manual »
In the Amazon culture, only the women serve as warriors, their intrinsic superior dexterity and lithe body structures are better suited to combat in the dense rainforest environs of the islands. Their society is far from stratified, however, as men are responsible for any number of positions in the community, government, and clergy, as well as merchant and agricultural occupations.
It clearly states Amazon women are warriors, while Amazon men have religious and governmental roles.

Technically yes. As Men can be priests, clerics, or the Amazon equivalent version. And generally speaking in Fantasy priests can cast various spells.

I was talking about the Iskari. If a new ranger class comes from over there, it would make more sense if they could be from both genders unlike the Rogues and the Amazons.
Achilios was a man with a Greek like name and he was a good hunter after all, coincidence I don't think so.

Does that leave men possibly up for a magic/casting class? Even if it's unlikely?
