But anyways, it's a silly theory. And you can't have a Diablo game without the big guy himself, so I'm sure he'll return. He might not be in the game storywise right off the bat, but over the course of the game I'm sure he is ressurected.

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
Maybe...
But i wanna kick Diablo's ass in D3, and D4, and D5, and D6......
I think there needs to be some encounter with Diablo in any game...
Maybe something like you beat Diablo at the End of D3, but you couldn,t prevent him from slipping through the portal into hell where he could rejuv.... thus leading up to D4.

I sure hope the next Diablo isn't an MMO... even though Blizzard could do that and make it a good game. With the World Stone gone the powers of Heaven and Hell take the Great Conflict to the mortal realm with full force. You chose to be an Angel or a Daemon.. and since neither side will ever win this fight, it's the perfect setup for a MMO... God, I hate MMOs.
Anyway, here's 2 important quotes we need to keep in mind
"And a child will cradle Terror in his breast as the heart of man falls under the shadow.
A Wanderer will pass through the ancient lands trailing chaos in his wake.
The Three Brothers will be reunited as the mortal world trembles before their might.
And so it was foretold that the Three, once reunited, would be shattered again --
And the last of them would set his sights on the holy mount. The warnings held that
Their defeat would be illusory - that the final gambit had yet to be played . . ."
* * *
And now at last the storm surges forth from the southlands, and the hand of Destruction
Reaches out to undo the workings of the Ancients. The tides of Hell surge - ready to smash
Down upon the shores of the mortal world - to drown the guilty and the innocent alike.
- Excerpt from the Prophecies of the Final Day
You have done the impossible, hero. Your defeat of the last of the three prime evils is a great victory for the light. Strange that you say the Worldstone must be destroyed. The prophecy said nothing about that. Perhaps all we have fought for will be lost. Or, perhaps, we will never need fight again.
- Anya, after Baal has been killed
Also, has anyone ever noticed that Tyreal's voice is different in the World Stone chamber than from the rest of the game? perhaps the original voice actor wasn't available for the expansion, or maybe Blizzard did that on purpose? A little "Belial in disguise" theory seems appropriate here, no?
I, myself, am not too fond of the idea of a prequel. I do, however, think that putting more story into the game would be great. I would love to see some cut-scenes taking place during the Sin War and the imprisonment of The Three. Perhaps at one point you will be following the path of an ancient Horadrim and this ancient character becomes wrapped into the Diablo 3 story as well, much like Horazon in Diablo 2. I also agree with the Books for story, and possibly a few quests.
One last thing:
"Seven is the number of the powers of Hell, and Seven is the number of the Great Evils."
We already know about all 7 Evils, where are all of the Angels?! Understandably they don't want to get involved in mortal affairs, but we were in their realm at one point and we only met one new angel.. and he was evil! I want to see some more immortals on our side.
I really wish Blizzard made a world if Diablo instead of warcraft. I mean Warcraft is OK, but it's really just diablo with no darkness.......
Anyway, they probably won't make it an MMO because they have WOw to fill that spot up.

It would be interesting if Cain had a prodigy to which he teaching Horadric secrets to.
OR.........if you had to fight Caine because HE is the one Big D chose to possess!!!! Diablo armed with all the knowledge of the horadrim + demon powers!!!!! That would be some cool shit

although that would be extremly interesting i doubt it will happen....cause after diablo dies.....now im talking in theory here cause i believe diablo is dead and wont come back.....anyway after he dies his soul attempts to posses a body but he has trouble because he is weakened...i believe that although cain seems like a ricketey old man he is likley more strong minded than king leoric whom diablo failed to posses
according to the prophecy it would seem that hell manages to come to the mortal world(who didnt see that coming) and destroy humanity...this is kinda like a story line i was working on before...where nearly all humanity is gone and the rest has gone into hiding....the remaing humans have heros(the player) who go on quests and hunt certain demon lords and generals and do other quests to the benifit of humanity...now of course in would follow a lore filled storyline that I may sit down oneday and dream up..but not today lol
yay first post and im planning on staying with diablo3 but in my opinion maybe archbishop lazurus got some of it wrong and belial was actually one of the demons searching for diablo and azmodan took over hell. Belial hears of the fall of the prime evils and brings them back and maybe MAYBE tyreal (may sound a lil stupid) tyreal has a evil half that actually came and destroyed the world stone and opened a portal that lead to hell where millions of demons awaited the 7 heroes and they entered the portal and were killed after a long battle and tyreal and belial bring back the 3 prime evils then belial and tyreals evil half learn of a small series of villigas that have heroes traning their and they send belial to persue after them. The heroes being weak were fightining some demons while Deckard Cain is in the camp belial comes and (amazingly Cain was not all scholary) makes a fight with belial and by the time the new heroes get back into the town they witness a battle between belial and cain. cain of old age eventually falls in the battle and belial beats up the heroes a bit and then moves on to another type of place like worldstone only if you destroy it angels will come to the mortal realm and try and stop the evil. the heroes manage to get to the stone first and break it summoning the angels into the mortal realm one angle stays behind to try and stall belial but he eventually kills that angel and angry at the heroes persues after them. the heroes after a LONG! while end up facing the 3 prime evils again and somehow defeat them. Then kill azmodan. Belial catches up to them and grabs the soulstone (a new plot they were all fused into one stone and they found diablo and trapped part of him in the one with the other 2 and the other one was ju st a really weak form) belial plunges the stone into his head and he becoms a form of all three prime evils at once and fights the heroes the heroes defeat him and then evil side of tyreal comes and they find tyreal unbetable then the good side of tyreal comes and a horde of other angels come and destroy the evil half and peace is restored on the moral realm forever more.

kk so ive done some thinking and after reading the prophecy again and thinking about ive become confused a gambit for those of you who dont know what it is...is a chess move where you sacrifice a peice in order to gain a advantage....now seemingly the only thing that could have been sacrificed was baal so who played him to be sacrificed and to what advantageous gain
The prophecy states the gambit is a series of events to occur after the Three are defeated, and the sacrifice is not limited to the defeat of Baal. Though I wouldn't doubt Baal's, Mephisto's, and Diablo's death and soulstone destruction becoming integral to this sequence of events, the prophecy at that point is after Baal's death, as well as Diablo's and Mephisto's, which could also be a part of the sacrifice
As Norgan said, Tyreal's voice in the Worldstone Chamber is different than at other instances in the game. If this is a planned device, then it would not be shocking if Belial or some other powerful Demon used the Prime Evils to gain access to this chamber, pose as a false angel and destroy one of the main barriers preventing Demons from entering the mortal realm. This could be "the final gambit," the sacrifice being the Three, and the victor being a mystery demon(most likely Belial, who hates the Three). And with some fictitional creations, the resurrection of the Three in the mortal realm may not be too far fetched. However, just because Diablo's name is in the game title, doesn't mean it has to be focused around him, it could end up being in the hands of Belial, or any powerful demon for that matter.

Why not lilith? She could've posed as Tyreal, wouldn't be the first time she takes form of another, example in the sin war book series. She has wanted the Nephalem to gain power ever since they were made. She would then rise to take control of them and fight to take over hell and heaven.
So whether she posed as tyreal or not, why can't she be the main character in diablo 3? The worldstone is destroyed, and it's purpose has been linked to two things. One is to hide sanctuary from Hell and Heaven, which didn't work too well, so in the end it just prevented them from easily accessing it. The second thing it did was that it slowly limited the Nephalems power until they were merely human. With the worldstone destroyed Diablo, Mephisto, Baal, and Lilith ( who also happens to be daughter of mephisto) can return to sanctuary and the humans will slowly return to the strength of the Nephalem.
Lilith who has wanted to control them, and the brothers who also want the power of the nephalem to take hell back, could join together and try to enslave the race. The game might start with you being a rebel against the slavery, you attempt to rise up and have to defeat the 4 high demons and maybe some lesser ones. Might even see something of Inarius trying to help you to prevent Liliths plan. Then maybe to end the series your character has to sacrifice himself/herself to make a permanent seal that closes any portal to heaven or hell and rids sanctuary of the power of the nephalem, or some strange ending like that.
I'm also tempted to bet that the third book of the Sin War trilogy will reveal alot about the storyline of Diablo 3. I think it would make sense for blizzard to try to announce the game before or at the same time as the book release. Otherwise the book would give away too much storyline and could hurt the interest in Diablo 3. Also if they announce both together it would make great publicity for blizzard. Even though we haven't heard anything about closed or open beta testing for diablo 3, it is possible that at least the closed has been completed. If after all these years they feel the game is perfected they could even do something nearly unheard of, which is to release the game shortly after announcement.
I think it would be a pretty great move on blizzards part. Plus I remember reading something about the second sin war book being dedicated to all the patient diablo fans. Why wouldnt the third book have the dedication as a type of encouragement to wait if it was going to be released long before the game? Seeing how the third book might be the last diablo book, at least before the game, I think that dedicating the third book would make more sense.
Most of that is just my hope for a quick release for diablo 3, but the storyline does make some sense if you research the worldstone and lilith's history a little bit.

Strawman? Not so much anymore, I'm just stating my opinion.
OK, i'm new and actually i don't know nothing more than waht u've told here about the books and saddly never will... anyway, i've come up with an interesting idea for the storyline for D3... i've seen that u all have noticed the absence of books in D2, and belive that this game has loss a lot of the original game magic it has been reduced a lot just to search for more powerfull items and kill monsters... so i think why dont reverse this situation, first of all, why does the character has to die?? why don't just keep them, and make them start with powerfull items, and center the atenttion of the game in the progress of the character in an intellectual basis, the path to become a horadrim magi, with cain as your mentor, to reinstate the brotherhood to be prepared to contain the Evils and Angels that will come over the mortal realm. So at the begining you have to grow on the knowledge of the story of the sin war and the great conflict, and so you have to search for your quests yourself, by knowing the "history" but with "yourself" i mean player not character, so the quest thing is a little bit harder, is not something given is something that u have to earn, make the game more intellectual, and of course kill some ugly beasts around... and in the end of it all, you and all the nephalems have to face the heaven and hell realms so they stop fighting here and go to their one realms and to their stuff... so the fight is not against one demon or evil or angel, but with them all, so, of course, aven thoug u'll have tofight a lot, u will also need to find a way to keep them away from this real, of course with some horadric super-mega-rare-unique-exceptional-magical-fantastic-item... so the thing can have an end, remember that the evils and souls, and angels and those thing doesn't die... ever... no matter how many times u kill them... they won't die... belive me
I think you had the longest run on sentence that I've ever seen. Congrats , but please try to be a bit more grammatically correct. Makes it easier to see your point.

The only reason I wouldn't totally disagree with you is because with Diablo, anything seems possible at this point. Some things less probable than others, but possible nonetheless. I'm not sure why Lilith would pose as Tyrael just to get the Worldstone destroyed. I mean, assuming that was why she might have posed as Tyrael-to destroy the Worldstone's destruction, that would mean her entire intricate plan was wholly dependent on whether the hero kills Baal or not. Cause if the hero hadn't killed Baal, Baal would have had his way with it. And that would not have served Lilith's aims.
Plus, we don't know yet what happens at the end of the Sin War trilogy. Lilith could very well be somehow banished from Sanctuary and forced to serve the Prime Evils only in Hell. I suspect this mostly because she really has a lot coming to her. However, right now Inarius has her imprisoned so who knows how that's supposed to play out.
Quote from "Tale" »
So whether she posed as tyreal or not, why can't she be the main character in diablo 3?
As I said, it remains possible, but still seems unlikely. And besides, while Lilith's role in things is interesting, she's kind of a boring character if you ask me.

Keep in mind that the mortals of Sanctuary can still perform incredible magic. It's just not the kind of magic that is based on the individual's whim. I believe aspects of the Nephalem still exist in every mortal, but are either deeply dormant or still dissipating slowly.

Depending on your interpretaton of the Worldstone's destruction. I personally believe that with its destruction as well as that of the Soulstone's, no Prime Evil may ever return to the mortal realm short of another intricate plan of exile like the one Izual helped mastermind.
Quote from "Tale" »

I'm assuming in brothers you mean the Prime Evils. Keep in mind that no other being is equal to the Prime Evils, at least not in the Prime Evils' view. They might certainly use Lilith to meet their ends, but they'll never be allied with her in anyway. Lilith is due for punishment by the Prime Evils. She's a renegade. She went against the tenets of Heaven and Hell with Inarius by creating what they did.
Quote from "Tale" »
Might even see something of Inarius trying to help you to prevent Liliths plan.
I think the only thing we'll ever see of Inarius, unless the game is a prequel, will be him as a crazed angel turned overlord demon inside his prison of mirrors. I've always hoped for the chance to fight Inarius. I picture him looking way more grotesque and torturous than any of the Prime Evils themselves.
