This was something I assumed would be in Diablo 3, but it turns not to be the case. Since it's currently a hot topic of debate, let's take a poll on the issue, shall we?
I voted no. To me, if you die but get your gear back, then all you have to do is start over and re-level and it's the same character again. So did you REALLY, in effect, "die"?
Of course, I played solo HC games in D2, so I'm used to losing all my gear when I die.
No. I don't want safety nets in hardcore. Also, think about the folks who play solo - doesn't that put them at a disadvantage since they can't get someone to pick up after they die?
HC was perfect in Diablo 2, if you exclude the PvP/PK system. Why take of something that worked?
I got used to the loot option on HC. It was just one of those things that you enabled loot so your friends could save your items if you had a lag spike or a dumbass moment. It was second nature just the same as throwing up your buffs before teleporting to Baal. I have been so used to that I figured it would be in D3. But to actually think about it, I see how it actually undermines HC. Even with this loot option available in D2, I STILL lost big items, so really I don't see this affecting my recovery from mishaps anyway.
I say yes. Then again I am that asshole that would go out of my way to try and get you killed to get your items. I feel it creates a more dynamic community, not everyone has or needs to be a hero. If that was the case shit would get old and boring quick. Evil actions create interest and opportunity for growth.
Evil actions are also bad karma. Aside, public hardcore could be unsettling for the reason Adon notes however, evil trolls lurk even amongst the best of internet-friends. Somehow I kind of like the permanant loss of items on death. Hardcore death confetti though... my eyes are awll sparkly.. I think i'm sitting the fence on this one.. the no side of the fence by a small margin actually.
Originally voted yes, because I thought it meant to have other people loot your corpses. I wasn't thinking about friends getting it for you, and then I re-read the title, and it's for saving items? No.
Personally, I'd love to see something were if you die, anyone can use your gear, except you (so friends can't grab it as a safety net). I think it would add an interesting dynamic to public co-op, where you have to watch your "team" to make sure they aren't trying to farm you.
Hmm I was originally in favour of yes just like D2, but some good points about no ladder resets and taking items out of the economy now have me leaning towards no. When I last played D2, culling of inactive accounts was still ongoing, which also helped keep economy healthy, howver that isn't going to happen for D3.
Having said that, many people play HC solo or mostly solo anyway.

I may ask Blizzard to wipe my account with every death.
OMG I think I'd rather dry-shave...
