As an older gamer, big into D2, but a touch more relaxed in D3 Im curious what the next step is with the ladder. Ive made a very modest P 180 with limited game play, but with renewed focus in D3, do most reroll with new ladder or do they just continue their toons and ignore ladders?
Im half disappointed with new ladder, since it makes my current ladder toons moot, but also looking forward to starting over and playing a whole season HC ladder.
The only real difference between playing the game non-season, and playing the game on-season, besides the paragon reset, is that seasons tend to have a few exclusive items. It's totally up to you if you'd like to play seasons or play normally. I've played all 3 seasons so far, and gotten to paragon 600+ in all of them, never really aiming for competitive play / leaderboards, though I did place in the top 300 in S1 for my class. But I won't be playing the next season. I'm going to just casually play my main(s). But that's because I'm burnt out and don't feel like restarting and leveling gems again. It's a personal reason -- you decide if you want to, or don't.
The best thing to do - is to do what's fun for you!
Levelling up and progressing in your second full season will be easier. If you play casually, then there will be plenty of people on these forums who will be very happy to power level you. That way, you don't have to go through the grind of levelling up to 70 (if you find it tedious). Effectively, you will catch up with your previous P180 reasonably quickly, so will not really be missing out. You can also dip in and out of playing the season/non-season toon - so best of both worlds :-)
I set my char up and forgot season play, been enjoying just non season but just created a season char the same, going to have to get through the storyline and give season 4 a go.. want to see how I can go.. seems to be getting abit boring doing all the bounties and rifts (for me as its repetative) but its great when others come into the game.
Heavily leading towards doing season 4 a full season, not too interested in leaderboards or e-peen but it does get grindy after awhile searching for gear you already have but with better stats. I like the changes with the upcoming patch too. Sometimes I just want to recapture that old D2 glory when Id go beastmode and lock 50 games and pop a server.
Thanks for the input, I think I knew all along what I wanted to do, just wanted to see what others think/do

So what do most HC players do??
I roll a new character every season, but I really don't care about leader boards. I don't think I could break any records anyway.
I like unlocking new content like portraits, pennants, pets and stuff and trying new builds (usually available only on season because of exclusive items)
I'd suggest to go with season, unless you got a reason not to (friends, only few hours for the entire season, ...).
Why:
- Every season, they change stuff, making 90% of your current items basically useless. You will have to farm for the new set, changed item, ... anyway. So you don't "loose" as much as you would think. Also, you can keep your "old" char untouched like this, showing you the evolution of builds over the patches maybe?
- The make the levelling and gearing process faster and faster. On this PTR (test server), before the xp and drop buff came in, I solo levelled a char 0-70, geared him up and farmed T10 (T8 efficient) in about 20 hours. I must admit, it is a monk But most important: the levelling experience felt good for once, with useful and a good amount of legendaries dropping, exciting loot the entire way, a bit of crafting, ... I actually levelled a WD 1-70 later on, because I wanted to doublecheck if I would get the same experience, and it really was fun.
- Maybe the most important thing: If you can start when the season starts, the multiplayer experience is amazing (for the first few weeks), everyone trying to level and gear up, looking for items for their builds, sharing loot, ... Not the "look how OP I am" chars in public games that make you feel weak, worthless and bad (and make it so you don't get to hit a single mob), or the other way around "I'm new and want as many items as possible to I'll leech in T6/10soon", but a nice friendly talking and sharing community -> this will stop as the season continues, since there will be more "OP"/"Leecher" chars (depending on how much time you played), people starting to compete, you don't find upgrades anymore, ... but that's even worse in non-season
- Season items. Sadly, even though a lot of people wanted ladders (else they were not introduced?), those same people need a reason to play season, resulting in season only items. Often, they are not just "fun" items, but mandatory, almost "a set piece that is not a set piece because we don't add legendary powers to set pieces". So, on non-season, you'll be missing out on the latest build, and you might never get to change a build because of changes next season.
- Rewards. You get some transmogs. I think some banner patterns for season only achievements. But in S4, you can get a pet, new frames around your hero, a lot of patterns, ... While they don't give you any advantage, some people do like it.
- Fun! It's free to start, you don't loose anything non-season if you start season. Give it a try. If you don't like it, you wasted a few hours (playing a game, made for wasting time?). If you like it, you have more fun
Going to have to see if I cant find a casual to serious HC clan now
Fellow old guy here (43). I'm playing season 4 HC, if you'd like to join me, just add me (btag in my siggy). Most HC clans are pretty "serious", from my experience.
It's a pain in the butt to get into the <dfans> clan due to it always being kept full. It is NOT a HC clan, but rather has players of all stripes, all modes. You could apply in-game by sending a join request, as well you can throw your name into the hat in this thread.
Myself and the other officers do our best to accommodate requests, but we're always full and typically new members are done on a first come first serve basis.
All that being said, I run with HC players both in and out of the clan, so if you add me, you may have some company. Some of the fellas I run with aren't planning on doing Season 4, so if you're not planning on it, you may be able to meet fellow NS HC players through playing with us as we wait for patch 2.3
Hey Altreg01... Fellow D2 veteran here as well. I started D3 pretty casual.. took a break and started up right before Season 2 ladder began.. I gave it a shot. From my experience, playing the season ladders has added quite a bit of enjoyment. It rekindled a bit of that fire I had back in the D2 days. From what I've read and what I have seen on the PTR, the next season, season 4, and the patch that will go with it, 2.3, are going to be pretty great. There are a lot of things going on with this patch that make the game easy to get into and have a lot of fun with. I plan on running the ladders. Granted, I am no top tier player at all.. But its fun to get onto the top 1000 ladder and try to have your name up there somewhere when the season ends and the ladder becomes permanent.
If you are going to play HC for season 3, which I was thinking of doing also, (I've been wanting to play HC since D2 and never had the stones to go through with it lol) I would suggest going with a high utility class that you think you can have fun with and go at it. No matter what you decide to do, gluck and have fun!
Thanks all, I have applied to <Dfans>, those of you who have asked, no I dont have any leveling groups. Really looking forward to the new season, next Friday is sooooo far away. Going to be really active too, Im done trying MMOs, ever since Lotro tore my heart out Ive been dabbling in others and they just dont cut it.

BurningRope#1322 (US~HC) Request an invite to the official (NA) <dfans> Clan
Seems "older player" section is required (55) and always loved Diablo and with D111 RoS and the patches update its more exciting each time.
Dont play HC myself as still trying to get my gear and coordination up to speed but good luck with the clans
