If all things turn out well I might be heading over to college/university soon and of course I still plan to game, however I won't be lugging around my old-geezer PC around (this thing can't even run StarCraft 2) and I need something portable, so why not a laptop that can actually run and play modern games on it?
And yes these laptops do exist, problem is finding them. So this thread (hopefully) is for you guys to list some laptops you believe are good (no Alienware please) and I would really appreciate it.
Yeah but I can't (and I most likely won't) be lugging around a desktop wherever I go. The laptop is not just for gaming but for college stuff too. Most likely I'd want a laptop that could run SC2 on atleast medium settings since running SC2 = running Diablo 3 and probably any game out there atm.
Edit:
Yes they do exist and they are more plentiful than you might think. There are also hybrid laptops now. I will explain hybrid and post some suggestions on where to look for for gaming laptops.
1st a hybrid laptop has multicore processor with 2 video cards and switching software and before you think SLI or Crossfire it`s not that at all it`s 2 separate cards one card more powerful than the other for example you could use one card for playing power hungry games and the other card for less intensive projects such as class homework or Microsoft paint thereby saving and extending battery life
Got this piece of info from another forum on same topic, might consider a hybrid maybe...
Asus G73JH, or JW the cheapest versions. The Asus G73's have a great cooling aspect and the JW has small improvements upon the JH model as well as nvidia graphics card 460m instead of the JH's 5870 mobility radeon, plus the JW has 3d. Best buy used to have the cheapest JH which didn't have a 1080p screen but it had the 5870 in it i think 500GB of storage and room for another HDD if you would like to buy one, and a regular DVD drive instead of blu ray. All for i think it was 900, and since black Friday is coming up i think you could probably get some good deals, maybe even on cyber Monday. But i highly recommend this as it doesn't overheat a lot, and it can play a lot of games at good FPS notebook check has benchmarks for both cards and how they preform in game, and yes they have benchmarks in SC2 on there, here is the Link GLHF and i hope you get what you came for.
P.S NEVER GO ALIENWARE, They might have the cool effects cool design, but they're so expensive its not funny, configure this on an alienware 17 inch and its about 2 grand, they are making you pay for the name, not anything special.

If you really want to though, read up on building your own, go to Newegg, and do it your way. Much cheaper to do it yourself. Else it's too expensive and not at all cost effective.

Well best buy has it for 1.2 grand i know thats out of your price range, MSI has some gaming notebooks that i'd look into although i'm not certain on prices or anything.

I can probably knock off $200 with my own money (I currently have around $120 saved somewhere in my desk), my parents are gonna pay for the rest though.
It is harder. But it's really worthwhile and better in the long run.

Some suggestions:
-Don't bother upgrading the processor, since it'll give very marginal returns
-Pay the 20 dollars for the cooling compound. Gaming laptops need all the heat help they can get
-You might want to invest $40 or so on newegg for a set of speakers to accompany this thing
-Should you look at other gaming laptops on the market, don't bother with an i7. It's expensive and it's overkill.
4 hour generic use battery life, pretty decent processor and graphics card... I'd say this would be able to play all current games and probably the next 3 year's worth at medium/reduced settings. This baby's got the best bang for your buck.

Woah, I've been doin' some research on some cards, anything above GeForce GTX 460M (On notebookcheck.net I figured this was the lowest possible in running SC2) and I've recently looked into Toshiba products and found theQosmio X505-Q892 and Qosmio X505-Q885
I haven't figured out specifications for Qosimo X505-Q885, but it's incredibly on the 3-digit pricing and I figured it would be worth looking into, would like some opinions on these products.
Edit: Added specifications for Qosimo X505-Q885, it has a GeForce GTS 360M, however this doesn't have a SC2 benchmark on notebookcheck.net, any clarification if it can run SC2 on high atleast without any problems?
It probably can't, cause the 5870 is worse than the 460m on ultra in SC2 and it's low is about 32, so it might just make it but you might have some spikes where it will drop below 30 which is the universally accepted playable frame rate.
Sorry thats at Ultra settings, For High It should make it just fine because if you look at the 335m's benchmarks they hit at an average of 30 fps which is playable, so that should mean the 360m should preform better, probably in the 40 fps, but medium should run absolutely fine with it.

Well give us the specs of your desktop, or if it's old as in 4-6 years old than shell out that 1.2 grand you can use for a desktop. and then buy a shitty cheap laptop. If your desktop is four years old you might be able to just put in some cheap new parts and run everything fine. Buying a 6870 only costs what 240 bucks? and that is close in performance to a GTX460 and beats a standard one. Xfired it can beat a 580, which costs 20 bucks more than xfired 6870's. If you are willing to spend closse to 500 on a gpu so u can play games at max and u have a case thats pretty roomy inside than buy a 5970 its better than dual 6870's and takes up one pcie x16 slot. If your low on DDR2 ram its dirt cheap DDR3 is 100 bucks for 4 gigs, also pretty damn cheap. These small upgrades can give a huge boost to performance. Also upgrading from a 5400 RPM HDD to a 7200 RPM HDD will only cost about 100 bucks, upgrading to SSD atm is seriouslly not worth it, although buying a 100 dollar 40 gig SSD and running windows and apps off that while saving movies music and files onto ur HDD is the best thing to do now for SSD's. Think about your options. Post specs, What PSU? What CPU? What GPU? How much RAM? How big and fast is ur HDD? How many PCIE X16 slots do you have?
