It will be a new laptop, I don't know what kind it is because it is my graduation present.
I don't know much about laptops so if you guys could fill me in a bit that would be appreciated
1. How well do they run games? Will it be powerful enough? Think...a standard, pretty good laptop...as in, don't consider it a piece of junk, but don't consider it alienware either.
2. If I want to say, add ram or maybe a video card, how do i do it?
I ask because I won't have my desktop, my laptop will be my only computer.

You will only be able to upgrade ram and hard drive. The vidcard that come with the laptop is the one you will stuck with. So, choose the best possible vidcard on a lappy you can.
You want 2 gigs of ram. no less than 60 gigs of hard drive space...thats actaully pretty small now a days.
Get an intel core 2 duo processor and a good video card. If it says integrated graphics... run like hell.
no... you want 4 gb of ram, 160gb hard drive and geforce 9600 gt or better...
less than this.... choose a desktop
heheheh
The problem is that I can't choose. It's my graduation gift, so my mom already got it. I hope she got a decent one lol. I'll use the info I got here to judge.

haha well, moms and computers... Do i need to say more?
9600M GT gets about 5500 3dmark06
260M GT gets about 11k 3dmark06 equivelent to a 2 year old desktop
Though, most laptops with the 260M GT are 1500 bucks.
It all depends on the cash

She works with technology for a living. I think she knows more about computers than I do. In terms of software i believe she knows more butI know a bit more internally whats going on.

And I don't think cash is an issue. She wont skimp out I dont think
I think the specs will probably be ok.
Is it difficult to change out ram and harddrive on laptops?

It comes down to how the laptop is built. Some have special openings for the place of the RAM and HDD so you might just need to pop 2 screws but in other cases it can be more complicated.
Btw, tell us if she gets you a pink netbook
lmao! that made me honestly laugh....will do.

integrated graphics card... its fused on the mother board. also means the designer was cutting corners to cut cost (read, cheap). that is unless it was one of those really thin and light notebooks. A good graphics card takes up more space and consumes more power. That means a bigger and heavier laptop with less battery life.
Eh, well if you're planning on using a laptop for gaming, you won't be able to play many higher end games :/.
Since laptops are more compact, they also heat up WAY faster, so if the system is under stress (high end games) it could actually burst into flames, I've seen it happen before.
Though there are pretty good laptops out there now that can handle most games, so hopefully she picked out a good one ^^.

I was able to play Oblivion on my laptop on mid to max settings without much lag. So laptops combusting into flames is actually not that typical. That would be kind of funny for the person watching though hahaha. Im sure there are games out there that all but the best laptops would have trouble with, but I think you would be surprised. Just don't buy a big a** desktop "replacement" notebook and dont get some cheap a** laptop with integrated graphics and you should be fine.
It's hilarious to watch ^^.
My friend bought a laptop which turned out to be incredibly faulty, the thing barely had any kind of ventilation, and it actually spewed (Yes, spewed) flames out of the tiny vent on the back. We were playing dawn of war at the time on LAN, and all of the sudden he's tripping out and yelling.
Good times... good times...
It was a cheap laptop though, so as long as you get a decent one, you'll be fine.

rofl...Thats soo funny! That reminds me of my old pos gateway laptop. We used to make fun of the retarded gateway salesman and their idiotic technical support.
Back when they stilll had those gateway stores you'd expect to walk in and if you had a severe speach impediment and spazzms with your hands you'd expect to be hired on the spot... "YOU'RE HIRED!!!"
Haha, my dad used to go to a gateway place, they barely spoke a word of english, and his first laptop from there crashed within 3 weeks.
We tried phoning in there like 4 times and I swear, they outsourced their customer service to like.... afghanistan. Not to sound racist or anything, but it was near impossible to understand this guys accent, it was such a thick accent.
Oh I miss those days ^^

"choh chnooo!!!.. Seems like you need to delete everything and reformat!"
"ahh sir, but i didn't even tell you what my problem was."
Rofl, god I love hilarious accents.
And again, not to sound racist, but come on, who doesn't love an accent.
Anybody can appreciate one ^^. Even us humble Canadians have pretty funny accents.
"Aboot", pfft, I still don't hear it.
Man, I'm really thinking about buying the lowest priced laptop they have just to go through their customer service again.
Hell, even a telemarketer call could fill my desire for accent right now.
Gonna go wait at the phone for a bit.. maybe I can will them to phone and try to sell me shitty vacuums.
edit: Just for the sake of having something on topic, max out your RAM if possible, future shop had a pretty good deal on laptop RAM a while back, they might still be selling it cheaply.

You are totally effed if it has an integrated graphics card. I'm willing to bet for sure diablo 3 wont play on it then.
