AUS vs IND, 2nd Test: Experts livid with umpiring on Day 1
Wednesday January 02, 2008
NEW DELHI (espnstar.com) - Cricket experts and commentators were livid with the standard of umpiring on day one of the second Test between India and Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Wednesday.
Coming down heavily on the field umpires as well as on the TV umpire, former Australian captain Ian Chappell told STAR Cricket: "Umpiring needs common sense and the thing with common sense is that it's not very common."
Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar also expressed his displeasure over the decisions. "There can be no excuses for the kind of umpiring that happened today. A bad decision can make or break a match, it can make or break a career.
He added that captains and teams had often talked about going with the fielders' call, but that he did not agree with it.
"If we have to accept when a fielder catches a ball that's close to the ground that he caught it, then even batsmen must walk when they know they have nicked it. If Andrew Symonds takes a close to the ground catch tomorrow, no batsman will walk. It can't be one-way process," he said.
Symonds had clearly nicked Ishant Sharma to MS Dhoni way before he even brought up his fifty, but umpire Mark Benson ruled him not out and the batsman, who took a step to leave, held back and stood his ground.
Former Australian opener Michael Slater said he could not believe his eyes when the third umpire ruled Symonds not out on the stumping.
I was very lucky... That's cricket though. I can sit here and tell you about my bad decisions as well, but I won't : Andrew Symonds
"Three of us were sitting in the commentary box when that happened and all of us said OUT! and then the third umpire ruled it otherwise. It was unbelieavable," he said.
Former Indian captain Ravi Shastri was of the opinion that because most umpires had been players before, they should be able to differentiate the sounds that can be heard on the field.
"If someone is an experienced umpire, the body language of the player should give it away," he said while referring to Ricky Ponting's caught behind appeal.
"Ponting was looking behind and the two batsmen looked sheepish. That should have given it away," Shastri added.
Ponting was given out LBW to another wrong decision - this time the ball had got a thick inside edge before it crashed into the pads.
Some of the cricket journalists covering the match were also asked for their comments. While some said that umpires should be dropped from the elite panel if they do not do their job well, others said the players should decide if they were willing to use more technology and in the process slow down the game.
However, Aussie cricketer Brad Hogg, who hit his maiden Test fifty and strung the 173-run partnership with Symonds in his post-match comments put it the best: "There are two guys in the middle and someday they will have an off day."

Haha. Umpires get such a bad rap sometimes. I used to be a baseball Umpire, and I'd get so much shit for it. I guess in Cricket though, it's a bit more of an exact sport, so Umpiring should really be simpler, and therefore when they screw up it's more important to the game.
Dude, cricket is the SHITE. Its awesome. I watch it whenever its on. Infact im watching it now. Whether or not the umpires were biased, its common knowledge Australia are a better team anyway. So it doesnt bother me much
I've heard that the New Zealand team is the best though! =P
I WILL GUT YOU WHERE YOU STAND! TAKE THAT BACK!
Australia is the best cricket team on the planet! And always will be!

Zubin, if you are referring to the fact that they gave Symonds a "not out" and then he went on to make over 150, get over it. I think you are forgetting the fact that they also called Ricky Ponting (a MUCH better batsman) "out" when he was infact no-out because he hit the ball onto his pad, therefor it wasn't lbw.
So the umpires are on no-ones side, it has just been a bad day for the umpire.
Yeah, of course they are forgetting that we thrashed them in the recent 1 day comp that we had. I won't go any further though because I fear that Elfen may be watching....... *carefully scouts the horizon*
No 1 team is best brothers. Every team has its luck.
The Indian team is very wierd. Sometimes its performance is outstanding and sometimes very poor.

Obviously you don't remember the period of Australian cricket when the Chappell brothers retired and left Kim Hughes in charge. West Indies ruled the cricketing world then.
