I'm giving a presentation in my physics class next week, and the topic is "Alternate ways of moving". That's it, the rest is up to me, and I need to figure out what to present. As long as it relates to both physics and the topic, it goes. Preferably it should be related to force, speed and/or acceleration since that's what we just finished, but it's not explicitly required.
Problem is, I don't have any ground breaking ideas I'd like to focus on. The beauty and the curse of the subject is it can be interpreted in almost anyway. First of all, what does alternate mean? Alternate from our perspective, or alternate from bacteria? Is it flying and swimming? Or is alternate a way that nature hasn't invented yet (hardly, but who knows?).
Strange thing is, the only thing I can think of to work with is figuring out what would be required for a being to hover in the atmosphere without ever landing, sort of like a giant jellyfish.
So I need your ideas and suggestions. Shoot
EDIT: I wasn't clear enough I noticed, this is from a more biological standpoint. Other subjects that people are going to work with are "Which animal is the strongest", "Different Eyes" and "Movement: The Cheetah, moving fast, Albatross, living in the air"

I'd personally go with moving from a point of reference. As in, while someone may not literally be moving, they are because the world is moving around them.
Say someone standing at the side of a road. From a point of reference from someone in a car driving, the person standing is moving, while the person in the car is not. This applies both ways as the person on the street isnt moving from their point of reference even though the people in the car are.
That or you can do the stupid stuff like circular motion, trajectory motion, etc.

Right, I'll get back to you if I figure out how it works.

There are a couple different ways to go.

Interesting concept, unfortunately I don't think I should use it, and it's because I just discovered a flaw in my translation.
The swedish phrase is "Alternativa sätt att ta sig fram" which directly translates into Alternate ways of moving forward. Unfortunately, I thought the forward part sounded much too focused on movement forward only.
Either way, I need something more practical to work with, but I might be able to put in some relative points of view into it all.

Hmm... That could work. Besides the obvious problem is coordinating everything you can see a lot of benefits from it. I think, perhaps there's a reason why bacteria don't form into huge masses.

They Hydralisk from Starcraft seems to be built from those, correct?
While their shapes are truly unusual, I don't know how to incorporate that into movement. They would move like a snake wouldn't they?

Yes they would, but undergound. So alternative way to move, digging? Well there are worms and such but anyways...
Digging on a large scale is something not seen in nature yes, so that could work. it has to work in real life, but I believe the boundaries for what is possible can always be twisted. I'm not designing a plausible life-form from the ground, but rather an aspect of it. So yeah, gravity-manipulation and teleportation is out of bounds, but I can go pretty extreme I think.

The best place to look would propably be insects and bacterias. Some diseases have interesting ways to move, same goes with plant seeds and such.

If we genetically engineered fleas to be the size of elephants would the massive velocity/acceleration from their jumps break a human neck if he was sitting on its back? or drain the blood from a persons body like a centrifuge that runs too fast?
How big would a flea have to be, to be able to jump at light speed theoretically? or some other type of uber fast living thing.
If the earth stops rotating instantaneously how fast would all life and loose soil be ripped of the earths surface because of momentum?
(Doesn't really relate but i always thought the idea would be insane)
Is it possible for any living organism on earth to projectile itself forward using the force of excrement releasing?
How many elephants would you have to blend up and compress into a cube before the mass of the cube could bend time and space around it?
How hard would a person theoretically have to sneeze in order to lift himself off of the ground?
Sucks it has to be related to nature, mother nature isn't really that good at moving around...

Don't worry about the neck, worry about the legs of the flea. Those will break long before it reaches up to the size of elephants.

The size doesn't matter, it would however need an infinite source of energy, and it would have to be able to utilize that infinite source.

It wouldn't. The escape speed of Earth is around 11 kilometers per second, and if Earth stopped spinning it's 300 meters per second or whatever it is, nothing would reach a high enough speed to fly out of the atmosphere.
Perhaps you only meant flying a little bit though?

Sure, but it would have to be a lot compared to the mass of the animal.

Any number besides zero, since everything with mass constantly bends the space around it.

Supposing his spine/lungs/neck/anything didn't break, very hard. But how do you define a hard sneeze? Do you measure it by the speed the air comes out, the amount of it or something else?

yea im aware of the whole infinite mass, infinite energy scenario required to move a mass at light speed but i was looking from a newton mechanics point of view.
A flea jumps 200 times their own body length in an extremely short amount of time right? I was wondering how big the flea would actually have to be to jump at lightspeed.
(if its legs didnt break :))
My elephant question was just stupid (maybe even more stupid than the other ones :)), but i was meaning that a human eye could visibly see a bend in space.. but nevermind thats just dumb.
The sneeze.. i guess you would have to measure the mass of a sneeze and its velocity/acceleration and all that funky jazz
interesting conversation you guys are having here...

Also slightly difficult for mother nature to work with don't you think?
I realise you responded before my edit, but what I need is something within nature to apply it to.
While their shapes are truly unusual, I don't know how to incorporate that into movement. They would move like a snake wouldn't they?
Do you have any examples?
That's a good example. I'll think about it.
Do you play 40k Snotspill?
Lol this shifted into an interesting conversation.
Hmm, I'm really bad when it comes to this stuff.
Is this just from a biological point of view?
The underground thing would be a good idea, like..an underground system of Maglev Trains.
Magnetic Levitation is the future! XD

Turned out by escaping Earths gravity, by negating it, Earth flew into him.
