I've been working on a piece of Diablo 3 fan art recently, and as I'm getting closer to finishing it, I'm starting to wonder whether or not I've added too much gore. The Diablo universe is a gory place, so it's not like it's out of place. However, I don't want to make people uncomfortable (honestly, I don't think it's that bad, but I find it hard to tell sometimes). I'd also like to submit it to Blizzard's fan art gallery, and they don't have an age gate there, so it would be natural that they don't permit some of the more gory stuff.
What's your opinion on what is or isn't too much gore?
Here you'll find an example of what I'm referring to. It's a detail from the painting I'm working on. The painting is supposed to show the monk having used the Exploding Palm skill on a few monsters, and they're blowing up as a result. I suppose the explosions should be even bigger. We'll see...
Where do you think the line is drawn for what Blizzard would or would not accept in their fan art gallery, given that they don't have an age gate there?
Have you tried asking their Twitter? They might respond there. And there's always other ways of contacting them...other people...
It is an important consideration, and kind of an ironic one. The game is going to be gory as hell, pun intended, but their website is open to all ages, not just the Mature audience of the Diablo franchise. Most of the people viewing the fanart are very likely casual players from WoW, who would not want to be seeing such things. It should have been a consideration of theirs for when they were renovating their website over the last couple years. They could always require real ID login or something, although some would obviously object. Do an age check that way.
To me that work is more portraying violence rather than actual gore. Maybe there's a difference, there.
That particular piece looks fine for the Blizz gallery.
However I would like to discuss your desire to make it not that gory. Why? Why would you want to make it not that gory? Why not make it over the top? Aside from the fact that you want blizz to take it. I don't see whats wrong with making people uncomfortable, especially in regards to this topic. A bit of discomfort and uneasiness would be a great thing to convey for a work being attributed to the lord of terror.

A part of the reason stems from something I heard once about not trying to impress potential employers with gore. This painting is going in my portfolio, so it'd be a shame if it makes employers hesitant about hiring me. I guess it's not as bad as that though. The full painting doesn't really scream gore/violence in my opinion.
Ohh I see. By the way I've been watching your youtube vids lately! I'm going to use them to make stuff soon but I've been busy with other academic art stuff.

For me it's more like using fake-violence to compromise different age group in their different perspective to the game.
While making assurance for us that we're still being serious with ourself. And com'on, we know it is more than just splattering blood, for crowding arround corpses, grabing gears on the chase, hunting down gamers could have been dealt with, or expanded into a more assuring depth in D3, instead of being deleted entirely as a flawed design.
It's kinda my last desperate attempt to spark up any traces of remain about this particular topic.
It shouldn't be getting such judgmental response at its now ended possible comeback and people with a more reasonable attention toward those I will call unexplored area would have a different say on the matter.
I agree there's room to make these functions reasonable, obviously crowding arround dead bodies fighting over gear is not ideal at all in a more ideal, interesting Diablo, and that also goes with killing lower level people just because you can. But I do consider those freed up gaps in D2 as a very raw model interface which can be more detailed, and rule bounded with limitation/circumstantial to a degree that it can be really interesting, as it sometimes is in D2.
Though these functions are now not going to be further explore but left for good in the slowly deserted D2. I'm very excited about the now perfected looks of our new Diablo world (D3), with its freshly piled of dungeon design asking for gameplay by me going to it over and over XP
It is a dawn on me to wrote what I just wrote and now feeling the true end of those possibility of robbing/taking of anykind/illegal town slaughtering possibilities.
