A dog will love you unconditionally. They're the type of buddy who'll go with you through thick and thin, no matter what shenanigans you seem to get yourself into. Even if you get drunk and punch them in the face, they'll get upset, but still stick with you until the end.
With a cat you need to earn their love and respect. They're more the easy going type of friends where you build a long lasting relationship over time. But if you're willing to give a lot, then they're willing to give as much and more from their end.
It's different types of friendships for different types of people. Sure it may differ, but this is pretty much how I see the two types of friendships. Bot of them can be very meaning relationships.
I have two cats, but no dogs, mostly because I have no space to keep dogs at my place. I will get a few when I buy a house with a large yard. I prefer wolf-like dogs above others, i.e. huskies and German shepherds.
I have one dog and cat, but I see merit in both pets.
Dogs are like mildly-retarded friends, they make you feel good about yourself and they'll (try to) help with anything.
Cats are like devious-asshole friends, they seldom care enough to help you, but they're clever enough to be funny at times.

Except their furry so you don't quite realize how retarded. ;D

2 of the most annoying grammar mistakes there. If I were a grammar nazi I would totally correct you now. Fortunately, I'm not. (Except they're)...
My family has always own dogs, but I'm getting a cat as my first "just mine" pet.
Cats are the best, it's a shame I'm allergic to them . We had 2 separate cats for about 5 years. So that just show the shit I'll go through to have a pet cat. The best and worst times that 5 years. I have lots of vids of him, showing his retardedness (not just dawgs proletaria ). Miss those furry, allergy infested fuckers everyday!

There are down sides to having cats around your computer too, for example you are playing a game and as usual your cat arrives on the scene at the most intense moment of the game to have a visit with you.
Hey how's it going? I just thought I would stop by and say hi! You aren't doing anything too terribly important now are you? Your keyboard feels really comfortable under my paws.
So funny i see this thread, as I just picked up today my newest little kitten lol =D now it's just gettin my other 2 cats (which are ~ a year) used to her. It's funny she wants to chase them =)

What about the cat that dropped the monitor on its owner's head?
yeah, but be careful it might attack you.
