I really hope they don't resolve the Arthas / Lich King story with WoW and it's expansions. Come on now. I spent countless hours on WC3, and got really into the story, and I refuse to pay for a MMO in order to find out the conclucsion to the (somewhat) cliffhanger at the end of WC3.

Wrath of the Lich King is going to have Arthas as the main baddy like Burning Crusade had Illidan.
It saddens me as well, Illidan was one of the most complex characters in video games...
Personally I hope the retcon WoW out of the lore... (As well as anything on WoWWikki...)
WC4 won't be out untill after SC2 though, as the RTS team is working on SC2 right now, and has to finish that before moving onto WC4.
Yeah, he was one of my favorite characters of all time
Illidan was never really a bad guy, and it makes me sad that they just made him one so a bunch of teenagers can go kill him with a group of 40 characters that according to the lore shouldn't even be able to lay a finger on him.
Illidan was quite honestly a great guy. The not only WoW but the books also made him out to be a bad guy.
Also, Illidan stood up to the Legion. Come on, he's a Badass with a capital B. He doesn't deserve that kind of shit.
Arthas on the other hand... Not really a fan... Though he's still pretty strong...

Take the World out of Warcraft, people! It ruined a great series..
My opinion.
I personally liked WoW, just don't think it should be lore... Something like the Appendix... You know the one...

Anyway, considering you'll be able to play a Death Knight in WotLK it should be safe to say that wether or not the players will encounter the Lich King, they won't defeat him. Cuz honestly, if the Lich King is dead what the fuck is the point of playing a Death Knight?
Lol. Never really even thought about that... It would be funny if a party of 40 Death Knights killed Arthas...

On the other hand, I'm close to giving up hope of Warcraft IV ever coming out. It would be hard to explain the events in WoW (I mean, who's gonna buy that some random bunch of strong guys killed Onyxia, Illidan, perhaps the Lich King, and then weren't satisfied and went back in time to have some fun killing Archimonde?) and from a business point of view, it wouldn't make sence to bring out Warcraft IV when WoW is doing so well, and by the time WoW isn't doing well anymore they'll bring out WoW 2..
How does that leave room for Warcraft IV? I hope I'm wrong, though.
Either A) they will retcon WoW out or say that the guys were lead by a hero, and make said hero the hero of Warcraft IV. Then bring about something coming from the Maelstrom...
I've read articles about interviews with blizz devs, and they've stated multiple times that their warcraft rts line isn't done and that there will be a 4th, and so on. Just gotta wait on that one ole' chap.
I don't think they will include WoW into the lore because there is way too much they can do with Illidan. Not to mention how retarded he looks in WoW anyways.

he was one of my favorites too, but its just a coinsidence i quit just before my guild had a go at the Black Temple.
as a sidenote, its not 40 characters after the Burning Crusade, its 25 (and he has been killed by 10-15 guys from major guilds lately).
Also, as a note on that, a group/army of heroes looks more likely to defeat such a villain (even though i dont consider Illidan one) than a lone hero, as it happens with most RPGs. And we're not talking about just anything, you need to be organized to even get to him (or used to before they nerfed Black Temple, anyway).

you do have the right of your opinion and i have my right to disagree. WoW made the Warcraft Universe much more popular than it was before (I liked the series but never went too far with the lore). Besides, many of the bosses you mentioned (Onyxia, Nefarian, Vaelastrasz etc) were designed from the WoW devs. We may have killed some of the major lore characters so far (Kael'thas, Vashj, Illidan, Magtheridon and Arthas to come) but think that these guys didnt exist before Warcraft 3 (and some before its expansion).
Also, about killing Archimonde, the Lore wont mention it, because it had to do with the interference of the Eternal Dragonflight that tried to alter time to destroy the world as it is (also made by WoW).
WarCraft IV will happen after the people are done with StarCraft II as LinkX said (people almost confirmed it already) and we'll have many more heroes and villains to see.
Think about what happened in the Diablo series when it came to lore:
Diablo 1: the hero defeats Diablo on his own and takes him inside himself.
Diablo 2: the "companions" of Deckard Cain managed to vanquish the Prime Evils but were too late. Notice how the "hero" became a group. Its an easier transition because there can be less questions asked about that "major" lore character that moved the plot forward.
Personally I think they're going to have it easier to create something better without having a new major character that defeated all these guys. Just the race leaders (gogo Gnomes!) are enough!

That's what people said about Illidan before he was brutally killed.
I personally have no problem with anyone killing anyhting. Up until Kil'jaeden tat is. Now teh Sunwell Plateau just makes me confused. Kil'jaeden is most likeyl the most cunning, powerful and devious antagonist in the whole damn Universe. I do not doubt that he can be killed, but I do doubt that his summoning to this world was so sloppy that a few heroes with the aid of the Blue Dragonflight cold kill him. That doesn't makes sense, Kil'jaeden was way too smart for that.

He was a good gouy with a lust for power who intended to create a new Well of Eternity without any regard for the rest of the world.
Then those 10,000 years did their part. I mean can you imagine spending that amount of time with nly Maiev as your companion? Poor fella...

I'd rather just have WoW retcon'ed...
The first option isv ery likely, seeing as how the boss battles have been designed. Is Illidan killed by some random heroes? No, hes killed by Akama and Maiev. Is Archimonde killed (again) by some random heroes? No, he's in essence killed by the Bronze flight. Is Kil'jaeden killed by some random heroes? No, he's killed by the Blue fligth.
Not saying there's won't be any other heroes, but it won't be 25 random people. It will be lore characters with the aid of new anatgonists.
And seriously, isn't it a good thing characters die? Warcraft 3 created almost all of these villains and heroes, we need some change now.

It will be inlcuded. Illidan will hae been killed in his madness on Outland.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.

actually, mate, they dont kill him. They just interrupt his summoning and he goes back. Thats what i heared at least from a friend whos guild "did" him.
would like it more if that happened with Illidan too, to be honest.
