That's probably because you play custom maps. A lot of people play melee WC3.
And there are tons of more custom maps for WC3. The editor is the most powerful yet user-friendly construction tool I've ever encountered. Anyone can build a melee map, but it also offers millions of ways to customize it to your pleasure.
Now I don't know how Starcraft works on Battle.net, but the reason for more diverse maps is probably because a real emulation of DotA cannot be made in the Starcraft editor. Don't worry though, Blizzard is putting in triggers for the new StarEdit so DotA will be playable in SC2
Oh there is a godly game on SC that is almost exactly like DotA. It's called "Storm the Fort". Just about exact game play mechanics, if not exactly the same.
As for StarEdit, that is the most useless Starcraft map editor I've ever seen. Anyone caught making Starcraft maps with that should be shot. As for WC3's superior editors, Blizzard just about took everything thats in editors like Starcraft Xtra Editor, Starfire, and Starforge, and made it the default editor. Trust me, nothing revolutionary with the new WC3 editor.

And why would WC3 be for off-line play? Can you give any reason except for the fact that you like Starcraft more? Beyond the campaign, it's dull to platy against the computer in WC3. Battle.net is what makes it fun.
That is true. My appologies. I was inserting my preference of UMS maps into that claim. Everything truely is better online.

Either way, DotA is far from the only game played, only the most popular. You can always find several DotA games running, but also Vampirism, Rabbit vs Sheep, Green TD, Stronghold, Angel Arena, Tree Tag. And if you can't, host the damn map. It's not that hard.
With all due respect, I live in the middle of nowhere, and am incapable of hosting a map. Always have sense my days on D2 and SC. *Sighs.*

And it's not the gamer emulating an older, it's a bored played who probably liked SC a lot better, but thinks it sucks today, and so has some fun in trying to create a Starcraft map. And the fact that it can be done is another point in favor of the diversity of the Warcraft custom maps.

As far as I know, DotA cannot be completely emulated in Starcraft because it lacks support for an experience bar (which Blizzard is adding in SC2 specifically so that DotA can work.)
Could you provide me with a link to a description of the map?

StarEdit sucks, yes, but the one they're including in SC2 goes beyond the one in WC3.
I've used Xtra, but never bothered with the other ones since I never really enjoyed Starcraft that much, but the impressive thing is that Blizzard actually manages to create something very user friendly in WC3. Other editors released with games fail miserably in comparison.

PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.

No no no, I'm not refering to the experience bar. Because there isn't an experience bar there are upgrade areas. You go to a beacon and then get control over upgrade buildings like evolution chambers and engineering bays. In other versions you get your own upgrade buildings so you dont have to go to base to upgrade.
Only thing I can really tell that WC3 version has that SC version lacks is the items, though in the SC version you can enter vehicles like the Goliath, SCV, and Tank. Shoot you can position the Tank as a seige building and use the SCV to build buildings. So both SC and WC3 have there pluses and minuses in it's version of the game.

Correction: Released with games. There are a good deal of awsome editors for games like SC.

That's a pretty big difference, because as I see it items are what makes DotA into just DotA. That and the balance between the +70 or so heroes.

Oh, there is balance, just with about ~20 characters. As for items, SC may not have items but you can get in tanks, goliaths, and scv's. And you can build buildings too! Nothing funner then building 50 supply depots and having 5 thousand of your side's computer controlled generic warriors going up against the enemy.
Plus with SC you got flame throwers... That's just coolness right there...:D

Yes it does!!!! *Cries.*
That's what I said

Oh! Sorry!
I'm not going to say that this sounds like DotA, because it doesn't. It does sound like an AoS though, which DotA is.
