anyone else that played Dragon Age: Origins and really looks forward to this one?
i sure do and think its gonna make the wait time for Diablo 3 better.
I loved the first game and went through 2 consecutive playthroughs. All in all I got about 100+ hours out of it. Really worth the 60-ish euros it costed!
Apparently the magazine Game Informer has some info on the story and some features. I haven't searched thoroughly through their website, but here's a list of new feats and some info about the new game. For the moment I'd take some things with a pinch of salt..
- Can import data from the original game
- Flemeth will appear
- Causing issues with party members won’t always be a bad thing:
"They won’t necessarily leave. They may still join you, but they’re going to try to show you up, and that may influence battle in a different way."
- Mass Effect 2 conversation wheel, now a symbol is shown to show what sort of reply it is (ex: aggressive or sarcastic)
- Manner in which the story unfolds will be different than previous BioWare titles:
"Dragon Age II has a framed narrative structure, which means that the exploits of Hawke occured in the past, but are being retold in the present." "Narrators with unique insights into the events in question tell the tale of his past adventures."
- Events from the original at the start may be shown, but from a different perspective:
"Dragon Age II begins as the events of Origins are still taking place, so you may see some familiar events from a different angle."
- Will see the consequences of our actions sooner instead of a little text at the end of the game
- PC version’s combat system the same for the most part:
"The PC version implements the same strategic approach afforded by a mouse-and-keyboard control scheme. Rather than try to mimic the PC experience on consoles, Dragon Age II has a battle system more tailored to the strengths of the PS3 and 360."
Another quote:
"You may be controlling a different character in Dragon Age II, but the choices your Grey Warden made in Origins are still imported from your save and reflected in the world."
About the conversation system:
"Dragon Age II uses a conversation system similar to Mass Effect’s, where players select paraphrased versions of the dialogue from a wheel. An icon in the middle of the wheel even illustrates the line’s basic intent (like aggressive or sarcastic), so you can focus more on the interaction rather than reading and analyzing your dialogue choices."
Game Informer speaking about the game, having played the Xbox 360 version:
"[Game Informer] can confirm that it is faster, more responsive, and more fluid than before. As soon as you press a button, something happens. As a warrior, Hawke threw down special strikes and used a new dash move to slash through darkspawn with ease. It isn’t on the Dynasty Warriors side of the spectrum, but with obvious improvements to the targeting system and animations, playing Dragon Age II with a controller finally feels natural."
had 2 playthroughs (both Origins and Awakening) and i'm really close to doing the same with my mage (first were warrior, rogue - damn city elven origin didnt let me be queen!)
can't wait for the sequel to come out. i just hope we get many customization chances, as we did with the original. pretty sure the name is set, though which bummers me a bit. if you get a nice party and the party members are so well made as the original, i dont think anything could go wrong
only 4 per tab, there was a whole defensive, two handed, general class skill tab etc, most of which useful, especially if you planned your spec well. was far better than many games skill system too.
the combinations were very effective (especially for the mage and in many cases for the rogue too).
the skills were even more impressive with the expansion, if not a bit overpowered (where's the balance?).
anyway, overall it was very decent.
I just hope DA 2 is actually optimized on PC. The first one runs like crap and there were HUGE lag issues that made certain parts, especially the end, almost impossible to enjoy. I swear, I'd see my character swing at a monster, and he would take the damage TEN SECONDS LATER. That only happened when I was having excessive lag, lag which I have no idea where it came from. The game just naturally lagged anywhere.
I also don't like that they are using the ME wheel now. What the hell? This is just that, its a ME thing. Just because you dumb asses invented a new and special wheel system doesn't mean its superior and should be used everywhere. Its certainly unique, but its annoying as fuck when you have no idea what your character is truly going to say, and sometimes it had unexpected effect because you can't really predict all he's going to say from that alone.
Its not like Bioware has any grasps or knowledge on how to make good games besides the story and the characters. Which is the only reason I'll be looking at this game.
I didn't enjoyed DA that much. The ice spells were completly overpowered, i found the bow skills very boring and i disliked the specialisations, specially the mage ones (SS is almost useless, Arcane Warrior is unbelievable boring to play).
Maybe i'm a bit to harsh to this game. Prablably because I expected something better then BG2. Imo the whole DA mechanics are inferior to the DnD ones, and DnD has tons of flaws.
But i'm looking forward to play this sequel though. I really enjoyed the story.
i see you guys mentioning some of the very flaws that annoyed me, no doubt, but some of the things i see could be easily countered by right choices (berseker/reaver for warrior for playing for damage, champion/templar defensive - assassin/duelist were amazing for the melee rogue - agreed that the ranger/ranged abilities were completely useless).
i havent had any technical issues though. my computer is pretty strong alright, but friends with worse systems than i played without any problems. did you have the latest patches and drivers installed?
on the spell combos (mage is by far the most interesting class to play) there are tons. there's a site that mentions them all that i cant remember right now. but Cone of Cold + Stone Fist is the one obvious. Grease + Fireball another that works well. i think death hex and death cloud also work together but cant remember exactly right now.
character development and storytelling was amazing, though (best thing i played in a very long while in that) and i sure hope to see more of that in DA2. i also liked the gameplay alot, felt like playing in a movie with the fatalities and the slow motion against the really big monsters.
what annoyed me more than the overpowered skills (or the little time i needed to finish Awakening) was that you couldnt talk to your party members and gain influence by your decisions too. i liked the characters and how they interacted with each other (Oghren and Anders especially were real fun to listen to when they talked to each other) but not being able to have real dialogues and having to look for gifts for each to listen to 1 (one) conversation was sad. it felt a bit like they rushed to get it done so they could work on DA2 for some more time. still found the story (both possible outcomes) interesting.
Yeah, I enjoyed being able to go talk to Sten in DA:O and hearing his often sarcastic and brief remarks.
Weird how you couldn't start a coversation with party members in Awakening yet if you gave Anders the cat and click on it he says "Who's a cute little kitty?"

Most of your complaints vanish on nightmare difficulty. Obviously on easier difficulties any immobilisation spell will rule supreme, but imho fire, ice and lightning are all equal on nightmare difficulty. Earth is not as good, but also requires less points to be spent in order to make your mage able to shatter enemies, so it's kind of a choice between how much you want to invest in that. If you take ice, you still have to get 2 earth skills also, or you could get the Forcefield line (which is great in and of itself even without the crushing prison having the shattering effect, but just takes more skill points to do it that way). Thus, it's balanced imo.
No it's not. I finished the game in nightmare with only a single wipe.
Cold spells were completly overpowered not because of shatter effects but because it's a overpowered CC. Ofc cold spells is not OP alone, you need good DPS or else the support will be useless. Still, Cone of Cold outshined all the other CC and debuff spells by far, so far...
Yeah, me neither. I can see why many people like it, but I never got into it. Mainly becouse I fucked up my character badly and it really demotivated me.

one thing i liked in the expansion was that you could change your characters spec. helped alot with the occasional screw ups (respecced a few times myself).
Now that we're getting closer to release, i decided to see how many are still interested in it.
The http://dragonage.bioware.com/da2/home/ has quite some info ready and i'm really pumped to try it out. Tomorrow i think we'll get the chance to try the demo aswell (always nice before the release - and rare). It's going to be a good way to check the changes they made from the original.
If i can live with them, this game is definitely going to be my main way for time to pass till the D3 beta!
I suggest you have a look at the demo. It includes a decent part of the introduction and it's pretty awesome overall. After playing it i can't wait for the full game. Will definitely take most of my time while i'm waiting for the beta.
Still not sold on this game, DA:O was a decent game, I'm a sucker for story and DA:O's story was forgettable. More excited on Witcher 2 just for the story :whistling:
How long is the demo? I downloaded it off of steam tonight and plan on giving it a try tomorrow night after I fail a few midterms, but I want to know about how long it will take so I don't have to quit halfway through the demo to do something else.
I have the demo sitting on my PS3... I didn't know you could get it for PC. PC = way better than consoles. I don't want to play it until I beat the first one at least once. Still working on that.
