Haha, the same thing happened to me. Everyone was shitting bricks about how it could murder your computer, so I avoided it.
Recently got it, and it's pretty decent, not worth buying though.

Doom 3, when you are locked in the control room and then that giant beast (Pinky demon) leaps down and bashes in the door...and jumps through the window. I had my brother play this scene in the dark with my surround sound system and he just about had a heart attack!!
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis scared the brick shits out of me, especially since I was about 11 and when I got to the police station. I walked down some stairs and just after I passed a window, the boss came through the window so suddenly, I jumped and literally shat bricks. It took me three months to even touch the playstation.

Dont know any game that have scared me actually, but thats kinda logic because I only play cute games, sorta, and Diablo-clones aswell as the original diablo games.
Legend of Zelda on 64. I was 6, and had no idea what I was doing. Somehow, between running around in circles and not listening to people talking, I made it out of town and into the fields. I was running in glorious happy sunlight thinking "this is great!" - then the sun suddenly set, it night fell and skeletal warriors rose out of the ground and chased me. I ran to the little outpost in the middle of the field and stayed there until we had to take the game back to the video rental store. And a few years ago, I was playing F.E.A.R with my friend; we were walking around in an abandoned office, just after finding a dead body. We were going very slowly (in spite of ourselves we had the volume way up too) and once we were finished exploring we went "aw well let move on" we walked towards the elevator and it crashed with an enormous sound- I jumped out of my seat and my friend fell over. And ironically, a few minutes after we gathered ourselves, the phone rang and we screamed again. F.E.A.R was awesome.
anyone remember the first fear. Cause i do. Remember that silly little bitch alma popping up in pitch black . Try playign that in the dead of night with headphones on you might really piss yourself there are just some pitch black parts where like a light would flicker for a milisecond and bam youd see her. Or the flashbacks to when she was born and you were in that firey hopital. Woo that was a scary one.

The game "Clock Tower" always got to me. There was something about hearing those scissors clink and never knowing when your head was going to get cut off that scared me.

The games I usually find scary are generally not horror-themed (FEAR wasn't even remotely scary to me, annoying was closer to it), but games that are usually somewhat hard to play, e.g., chance of dying is pretty hard; games that sport some nice atmosphere, not necessarily dark even (as the HL2 bridge area).
Usually sounds of some enemy I know that's hard to kill, for instance, could scare me in game... I also found that quests where you can die are sometimes a bit scary due to how little control you have over the character. Ctulhu game was pretty cool...
I forgot that one. So long ago. Really nice atmosphere in the game...with a lot of time spent either in graveyards or heavy mist and....werewolves and demons crashing through windows to get to you... Cool boss fights too.:)
Your right fear wasnt scary actually none of these games are scary in fact they are just surprising which most people get confused with eachother. For example Paranormal activity, NOT SCARY. Just a little surprising when allt he shit happens liek you don't expect it. Scary would be me almost shitting myself going home and not being able to sleep cause of it. Unfortunatley tht happened once when i was ive and was playing the fist resident evil. Just remember make sure the first game your kids play isnt a scary one like re cause that was not cool.

Rise and rise again, until lambs become lions
I never played any RE game besides one for... I believe it was Dreamcast? That was pretty messed-up.

If anyone remembers that game, then they'll remember the part where they have to hang the clown on a hook and swing him across an empty warehouse...
clowns are creepy.

May be a bit too direct for me.
Kind of reminds me of a part in Black Mirror where you looked into some hole and a spike goes through your head...
