Hey guys, I just thought I would make an thread on what i thought were some bad gaming trends, and if you have some to add or some comments, that's great!
1) Regenerative Health
Remember the days of Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, where the missions were actually a challenge? I loved having to worry about getting shot and having armor to find. Besides, for wanting to achieve realism today, that is quite a lousy way to do it. IMO for MOST games (some games work well with this system) i like a set health limit and that's it. With that said, I am also a huge fan of the medic style of battlefield.
2) Chaotic FPS's
Now dont get me wrong, I love some of today's FPS's and chaos certainly fits the genre. With that said, you often find in FPS's today that the enemies already know where you are and you just keep driving forward shooting mindlessly. I loved the approach of Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and Timesplitters (2 being my favorite). That being said, some games like Crysis have done the tactical approach much better then others. i dont want FPS's to be splinter cell, but the idea of starting unseen many times and using the element of surprise is very fun.
3) Western RPG's That Don't Know What They Want To Be
I am sure I will get pretty much everyone here against me on this one, but IMO games like Fallout 3, Oblivion, and Fable II (dreadful game I think) all strive for a feeling of so much to do and tons of customization, but really lack. I would have to say the biggest offender is Fable II. The game seems kinda like zelda but the story, combat, puzzles, and so on are lacking compared to zelda, but the customization and other elements lack when compared to Diablo II. So IMO the game is just too spread thin and doesnt really achieve greatness.
Save system. Everyone's switching to some weird console systems where you can die and go back to your body, or where you go back to a checkpoint. Many don't let you save where you want to. Particularly FPS are an offender. I like my saving system old school, thank you very much. Save/Load. No more, no less.
Bosses that later becomes normal enemies. Just fucking stupid.
And when a boss is just fucking invulnerable and the game doesn't even give you a hint on what to do (I'm looking at you giant worm from Lost Planet :mad::mad:)
Oh and games that doesn't give enough rewards, let's take as RPG with 20 levels. They are spread very thin and the general experience just dulls down, if you had 80 levels instead you'd get a sense of accomplishment all the time.
Enemies that levels with you, a stupid invention that should be purged. You don't feel powerful when the enemies are just as powerful as you.
Games with no auto run, like Batman: Arkham Asylum. You gotta hold a button to run, which is stupid.
Copy cat games, like Limbo of the Lost, stole everything from Oblivion and other games.
Every game that allows you to take a rocket to your head and still stand on two legs.
Giant breasts / asses. You don't need all that, just used to lure horny teenagers (I'm looking at you Ninja Gaiden Sigma ).
Retarded AI, those that keep running into walls and stand in your way.
Games that are less then 30+ hours. They should only cost like 20$ instead of 69$.
Console games that don't allow hyper sensitive right stick.
Japanese RPG's.
Children games, they should be burned.
Quick Time events, they must be destroyed!
Games that are developed from a movie, they always suck.
I agree with you on some, but some I personally think are wrong. I definitely agree with you on the monsters leveling with you...absolutely lame. And to your last one, all I need to say is Goldeneye lol. and there's a couple others, such as chronicles of riddick.
p.s. - no one likes dumb AI lol...I think that's a given
Haha, I agree that the longer the game the better (usually),but the length really depends on the genre. If its an RPG (especially a JRPG), the length had better be 40 plus hours. I don't mind that Diablo II isn't THAT long because it has SO much to do besides the main story. I would love to know how many hours ive blown on that game lol.

This, damn it.
MMORPGs are notorious for this. I am so sick of playing a female character only to find out that the higher level they get, the less they wear. Sorry, but I like my character actually wearing armor when fighting the bad guys, and not prancing around in a chain bikini and spiked heel boots.
I think the only MMO I've played that doesn't do this is Lord of the Rings Online. I was pleasantly surprised to find that female characters actually wore appropriate attire.

No, but it lengthens the enjoyment you get from said game
Well, yes and no. Like SNowfreak said, it depends on the genre.
Take a game like Portal, for instance. The game was only about four hours long (if that), but for the game type, it was perfect; if the game were any longer, the gameplay itself would have gotten stale.
Then again, Portal was relatively cheap from what I remember, so... I guess I have no point.
One thing that really ticks me off about gaming today(trust me theres a lot of other things but most have been mentioned) Is when a developer fucking tacks on multiplayer or even in some cases single player to sell a game.... Its like every game nowadays NEEDS a shitty multiplayer component to be worthy nowadays. For some reason that drives me crazy, I just wish devs would either Focus strictly on multiplayer or just single player for there products unless the intention is to have both of them intertwined well like say in warcraft or diablo. It would probably make most games a little longer and probably have more detail and balance or anything really if games were more focused nowadays.... Well thats the end of my rant

You just reminded me of something that cheeses me off about gaming, so thanks.
I wish that developers would stop giving PC gamers crappy ports of console games. It wasn't so bad before, but now it's gotten to the point of ridiculous.
I hate more then anything these games that are beautiful and amazing graphics and life-like sounds and sound affects....and the story/plot is nearly non-fucking-existant...
Pisses me off to no end... Hell, at least you fucking save the Princess in Mario and Zelda. At least give us something...

thats something else that pisses me right off! Devs making once big PC franchises more console friendly. Now I have nothing against consoles many of my favorite games ever are on consoles but so many great PC games lately have been dumbed down so much for consoles. The best example of this is easily oblivion. Morrowind was so obviously a PC game brought over to the xbox but Oblivion was obviously a game developed to have a far more simple interface for a controller...uhhh Theres a ton more examples but thats the first one that comes to my mind

I recently purchased Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway for my fiance - XBox controls were a part of the keyboard configuration. Now, I know that you can use a controller for PC gaming, but at first glance, that just seems like lazy programming to me.
As far as making games more console friendly, I don't think this has ever been truthier than now with the Call of Duty series. Just look at the mess that Modern Warfare 2 has been making.

What?
But... but... it's Rosa. Besides, she was wearing questionable armor before it was cool.
Also, she's a white mage, but still... yeah, I know.
lol not duriels mother-in-law, hell if youve seen one bug youve seen em all, what about the cross-dressing buthcer? Then it isnt a vagina monster, its "Ah... Fresh cock!"
I agree with one of the original poster's gripes, games without any soul but try to make up for it with a huge number of things to do. Oblivion is to me the prime example of this. Loads of stuff to do but no matter what I did it was never satisfying because the storytelling was so weak and the atmosphere was oh so bland.
It's predecessor Morrowind in my opinion succeeded in maintining some kind of soul and interest while still giving you plenty to do (even more than Oblivion I found). And with the highly active modding community that Morrwind has, the game's constantly improving. I love it.
If only Oblivion had been able to maintain that kind of excellence, I would have been one happy gamer.

In Oblivion there was this side quest where you went into a painting and killed a bunch of drawn trolls. That was frickin' awesome. Just to say, that was some good storytelling right there.
And how about the Dark Brotherhood quest where you have to go back into the secret passage the game started in and assassinate that dude that was giving you a hard time? Pretty cool imo.
But the main quest storyline, yes indeed, sucked.
Yeah you pretty much pointed out what everyone I hang out with thinks about the game. It was all pretty crappy/average but the dark brotherhood and that painting quest were well done and really cool!

Using the UE3 engine for new game like its any good.
But its crap.

I find that Oblivion improved its visuals rather than its gameplay.
I sincerely hope D3 will not be the same case.
If it is, /wrists, anyone?
Sounds to me like another of people are just bad at English
=P
I'm just kidding
what?...no really what does this statement have to do with anything that has been said previously lol I wanna know
I did enjoy the Dark Brotherhood quests, though I found them a bit monotonous after a while.
And then I started used the noclip thang. Forgot the actual command.
