I've been playing Grim Dawn ever since its release, and I gotta say I am pleasantly surprised. I thought it was going to become very dull very quickly since one of my friends said it was exactly like Diablo 3, but with fancier looks.
That statement couldn't have been more wrong, I think this game has more resemblance to the Titan's Quest series more than any other, and I am absolutely loving it. The gameplay is smooth, fighting isn't slow and the way they have created their itemization and skill/spell distribution works really well. I haven't even reached end game content yet, and I don't even worry that the game won't hold up in that end, because the skills that I am working my way towards looks interesting and powerful, which is what I gather from the text descriptions alone!
The reason it resembles titan quest is because its made of the same devs and more or less an exact copy.
I have followed GD since it came out as a EA game and played it on and off until it was done. When it was done me and 3 friends started multiplayer. Problem is. Multiplayer just doesnt work.
Most of the time the game crash and you get a black screen. That makes you lose loot from bosses if the timing is wrong. But thats not the worst problem.
For two of us when the game crashed in MP. windows got corrupted and we had to reinstall. Endless bluescreen.
If it happened to one of us it could have been a coincidence. But since it happened to two of us at the same time. Not a chance. Same error message in the bsod aswell.
And ecactly like diablo 3 with a fancier look ? what the hell is your friend on about ? It looks nothing like diablo 3. It look grittier. But the graphic looks like its from 2010. Its pixelated and rather bad coloring.
Diablo and grim dawn are both rather shit. But diablo 3 atleast looks good. Could have been grittier and darker. But the models and graphics are atleast up to par.
You think a game using Titan's Quest engine and following Titan's Quest character progression system, and based on Titan Quest in general resembles Titan Quest more than it resembles Diablo 3? Interesting opinion!
It definately doesn't have "fancier looks" than Diablo 3. I mean...it looks like Titan Quest... Just slightly improved. What makes it stand out is all of the improvements added on top of the basic idea of the previously mentioned game. Grim Dawn is far more complex than it meets the eye at the beginning. Some fairly original ideas like items granting actual active abilities, among the more interesting ones. For a "mostly" single player oriented game it offers a lot of replayability which most games like that do not.
If i could compare it to something it would be a mix of Titan Quest (duh!) and Dungeon Siege 2, which is still one of my favourite hack & slash games out there. Before someone mentions it, Dungeon Siege 3 is just a joke that ruined the "legacy" of the series and is to DS series what Sacred 3 is to Sacred series.
But that said, people behind Grim Dawn definately deserve some heavy props for their product. I hope they will continue to release similiar games in the future, cuz they are damn good at it.
I have just over 600 hours invested into Grim dawn and at present i think its one off the best action rpgs ever made. There's so much depth in itemisation and the amount of sheer fun there is in creating unique and functioning builds is very very satisfying.
Their are of coarse some issues mainly the game does look a bit dated by modern standards but hey i still play diablo 2 so i don't really care about that.
i can not recommend this game enough and prehaps if your on the fence, check out some off the steam player reviews to get a good understanding of what people think.
more like grim yawn ill never get bak those hours wasted lol bak to diablo3 lol there is no arpg ot therte yet that I found better than diabl;o3 and I played/own them all lol ! ohh wait d2 only 1 that can compare love u guyz + no end game in grim yawn.......
Bought it when it was released few weeks back. Played about 90hours since then. I've been having way too much fun playing with a friend. So far I got a level 75 Pyromancer and a level 56 Conjurer + bunch of other low levels.
Only problem Ive had with Grim Dawn is that it keeps crashing way too often. Feels like its still in beta tbh.
For me, Grim Dawn was a good game and a good alternative to Diablo 3. Its done very well by arpg standards, and its still different enough from Diablo 3, which makes it somehow fresh and interesting. Its done by a small indie team, which explains the not up to date graphics and the lack of a multiplayer infrastructure, but for me, as a single player, that is fine.
Right now, i'm at 65 hours played, which is fine for a 20$ game, so it feels like a good investment.
Would i play it for hundreds of hours and dive really deep into endgame? Probably not. The first play through in veteran mode was not too easy and not frustrating, that was quite good. Now in my second play through in elite mode. Progress has become a lot slower. Difficulty spikes between "boring, everything just takes long" and "corpserunning 15 times on a single enemy". Progress by loot is very random. It feels like d3 vanilla, almost everything i find is crap and the good stuff doesn't match my class. The bounty system is like diablo's in very very unpolished. When i was 15 years old and had so much free time after school, i would have played this for hundreds of hours. Sadly, my free time these days is much more limited, so i will probably not finish the game on ultimate.
I like the atmosphere of this game (as shown in the first video), the sounds, the lighting, etc, pretty immersive. I'm not a fan of top-down RPG though, I think this era is now gone and we should move on instead of sticking to the nostalgia of isometric games. Personal opinion ofc. =)
