Hey, guys, chill... game will be released before July and then this and all "contest" threads will be at the end of the pages, and we are all going to enjoy playing The game.
Its the whole principle of the thing dude. Its less about the key... i entirely admit i stand even less of a chance of getting a key now that i'm protesting the sites contest... and i'm still doing it.
This site decided to fuck over its long members in the pursuit of money.
This would be a whole lot more convincing if any of the communitarians among you could produce even one solid reason (which stands up to philosophical scrutiny) for why membership (note, not enthusiasm for d3, but a registration date) gives certain people some intrinsic amount of worth and dignity.
As I have repeatedly stated, posts = contributions to the community. Posts that are not being bribed by the chance of a beta key are more fluid and natural and almost always a better post.
As being long time members we have built, and maintained the community that is this website. If people did not post here, no lurkers would come, and there would be no site hits AT ALL. This means no community and no website.
This being a fansite means that the strongest of fans will gather here to discuss all that is diablo (and sometimes philosphy and religion). Being a fansite... it is driven by its fans and therefore by loyalty. If fans are loyal to a site... the site should reward the members with some sort of recognition.
You need to clarify one thing in your post. -> Contributing members <-
Lurkers are going to argue that they are fans... and they very well maybe. However, for all we know they only checked this site once in a great while and in stead frequented the other sites. Or that they only checked once a month... etc.
Lurkers do not contribute to the community, but they get our banter from our conversations.
By all means that's exactly what I meant. Thing is though - the site has around 3000 constant members lurking and around 100 that actually make the posts that can qualify. So...

Your first point is unsubstantiated. Having read this forum for many years, I can safely say that there are plenty of bad posts being produced by "the regulars". You did not produce a reason why lurkers, who are diehard d3 fans, should be excluded based on a registration date. Your point that fansites ought to reward specific groups of members with betakeys is still not convincing. We get that you feel that you should get some kind of advantage over others, but beyond feeling its just not a good argument.
I'm sure you read Bibi's post about the legal issues involved in favoritism too.
Which is full of crock of shit. There are 1 million and 4 ways to make it legal.

If by "specific groups of members" you mean "the posters that make a forum - a forum", the people that create the content that you read on daily basis without contribution, then yes, I believe me and Sabvre do mean exactly such people.
Well coming from a looonnnggg time lurker and recent member ( took a while to register, just would not let me) I do sympathize with the long standing members of this forum but I think that as long as any one is a fan of the Diablo series then every one is entitled to a key.
I know we all would like to have a go at the Beta more so me but it is like trying to win the lottery, if it happens it ihappens and if it don't then count to ten and keep lurking.
uh, thanks for not contributing anything? The issue is not about what the meaning of a "forum" is, but why Sabvre somehow thinks that a registration date confers worth on people. Why shouldn't enthusiasm for D3 be the main criterion, if we absolutely want to consider the pointless question of who "deserves" to be in the beta?
Because just being interested in a game ... or playing WoW and hearing that your buddy got a key and being curious doesn't make you a TRUE fan.
Lurking != Contributing to the community and this whole betakey contest was around community.
I know how cliche this will sound... but you are only arguing because you somehow want to justify why you think you deserve a key (when you never did shit on this site). If blizzard was giving out keys directly then yes you are just as entitled (or not entitled) as the rest of us. However, these were given to fansites... and were not meant to be just throw away keys.

As i said before its not about me personally not getting a key. I've accepted the fact i will not play diablo 3 until release. It is about the fact that diablofans is throwing fucking keys at people for useless and redundant posts...for spam and for repetitive crap. This is not community building but community destroying. They are rewarding people who got linked here by the Blizzard post for doing absolutely nothing.
Blizzard could have given a key to you through their own lotterys (like they did with facebook) but instead gave it to diablofans. They should have used this for their members rather than random fucking people.
This topic doesn't help fix it : there are already tons of topics of that kind. If you would rather not see those topics every once in a while, stop visiting the forums and you are good.
Many people also lurked the forums a lot and this contest made them create the account, so not everyone actually asks old questions since long-time lurkers first time-posters read the forums for a while.

Actually just because I have lurked here a long time does not make me a random f%#& person, I was lurking this site before I even went to the official Blizzard site. And you don't have to post left and right all over the place, I prefer to post when something is left unsaid or I have something worth saying (better then ranting and raving like some here)
i think this contest incentivates people that normally only read the forums, to post, and that's a good thing.
I agree with you. As I am one of those people that actually read a lot on diablofans, but have not bothered to find out how to get an account to write stuff on the forums. Usually I find it interesting to just read, but since there is a contest involved, actually posting makes it a bit more fun to it. I actually used some time to figure out how to be able to login and how, which is probably why I never really tried before now
Personally I've seen more actual members win the random posts than "one hit wonders". It just sort of works itself out. Long time members always post here, so they have no problem making quality posts so there is a greater chance to land on one.
I think some of you have this misconception that we make money based on how many viewers we get, and that's not the case, this isn't youtube. We as individuals do not see any extra income. These decisions weren't made thinking "How can we make the most money." Rather "How can we be fair to EVERYONE and give everyone an equal chance." None of us here are seeing any extra money for how we structured the contest and we had free reign to design it like we wanted, and no the whole staff isn't paid. Most of it isn't it's fans who love the game volunteering to help a site they love.
Of course we want to bring in more people, but that's mainly for the sake of good conversation. After this is over the people who came in and saw what they liked will stay, the ones who came just for a key will leave. We are primarily and will always be a fan site and part of that is having lots of fans.
We tried to be fair to everyone. Sorry if you don't feel that's the case.
I can understand your perspective from the typical "veteran" viewpoint, but at the same time I have to disagree, and not just because I am one of the people you speak of.
1) It adds legitimacy to websites like this as it is endorsed by Blizzard itself.
2) It gives exposure to websites like this and promotes the building of a greater community on these fan sites and the community as a whole.
3) It gives people a very creative way to feel like they are doing something to earn a beta key.
And who knows? Once I can change my avatar picture without it bugging out, I might just make this part of my internet rotation.
I would like to formally protest this post contest.
1.) People are just going to create multiple accounts in order to increase their odds of getting a key.
2.) The long time members are going to get flooded out by the newbs that are ONLY contributing for the key.
3.) The influx of new members normally creates an influx of repeat topics and questions that are often retarded as they are old old old news.
I am one of those people that created a new account to get a beta key, but that won't keep me from contributing constructive posts. The contest will make "newbs" create many accounts, but it won't do anything since they need to make constructive posts and I'm sure they aren't going to give it people with random posts. Also, people that made an account just for the key can still add to the community despite their initial intention.
