well after playing diablo 2 for 6 years (and then quitting for 4) and playing hellgate london in the alpha for a week, the best way I can explain it is this:
Diablo 2 and Hellgate London are like a Real Pen1s and a D1ldo. They are VERY VERY different things, but they rub the same sensitive spot.
Yea i agree there different, but then again they have MANY similarities. IE all spells instant cast, inventory/paperdoll, non-refundable skillpoints, wierd-ass specs (meleemancer in D2, sacrificial explosion summoner HGL), even the drop mechanics are the same (when you kill onyxia in WoW, she has a chance to drop 1 in 20 or so items you can only find off of her, and those items are better than world drop items; when you kill mephisto or ______ in HGL, he has a chance to drop a boatload of items you can find everywhere). Items changing because of which mode it drops in (Normal Exceptional Elite). There are a little more than 100 different base weapons in HGL, which isn't as much as D2's 160, but this is alpha (these numbers do not include exceptional or elite weapons). And when you say creators, it is Literally the creators. Same Chief Officers, Same provisional directors, Same Visionary. Your creation enviornment is the same as Diablo 2's. The art director, Phil Shenk (yes, Shenk the artOverseer), Erich and Max Schaefer, creators of Schaefer's Mallet. Skullder of Skullder's Ire... Sadly, The Stone of Jordan has moved on to World of Warcraft and has stayed there after promotion to a Staff.
I'm kind of angry with the D3 crew. They're basically praising blizzard like the christian god and shunning the non believers.
Heres an example: J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, is obviously finished with the Harry Potter line of books. She is currently working on a new book based on a different idea than magic, with no Harry Potter characters. The situation? The Harry Potter Fans are saying that J.K.R.'s new book is shit, and that the next Harry Potter book will rock regardless of the writer.
No we add the players: The Diablo series is the Harry Potter series, Hellgate London is the new book, Flagship Studios is J.K.R., and Harry Potter Fans are obviously Diablo 2 Fans.
Is it ok to make that judgement? I mean, she did crank out the fucking harry potter series... and now that shes out of that frame, does that make everything she writes suck? If I remember correctly, SHE made harry potter; Harry Potter didn't make her.
Same goes for a lot of people on this site. They are too busy wrapped up in the awesomeness of Diablo 2 to realized it was created. And Blizzard will not create on the same note as Blizzard North did. No, those two companies are not the same. They obviously will make a great game (because they're blizzard: Fiascos like starcraft Ghost don't hit shelves, and they don't announce games without potential), but it wont be the same flavor that D2 has. Part of the reason they haven't released a D3 yet is simply because they haven't been able to replicate the sweet spots D2 hit.
Another Analogy: A Guitarist created and can play a song really well. Is this due to the Guitarist? Or the Guitar?
You guys are screaming about how you don't want a D2 Replica. Well guess what: HGL isn't a Diablo 2 Replica. It's a step in a different direction. And it builds off of the ideas the team had for Diablo 2. They're considering creating something called a "monster fountain"; an instant boss respawning portal. Everytime you kill the damned beast it respawns, but this time its harder, stronger, etc... and it keeps repeating until you can't kill it anymore! Can you imagine that? thats fucking cool. The crew that Made Diablo and then went on to sodomize the baby-maker and have the child named Diablo 2, have once again moved on and created HGL.
I'm not angry with people who say D3 will be better than HGL, because frankly, I hope they're right. But we all have to remember something pretty fucking important; D3 doesn't exist yet. But I am pretty pissed off at the people who say HGL sucks. Those are the kind of people who help elect narrow minded dumb fucks like themselves into office.
On a sadder note, on most of the profiles of the ex-diablo Flagship Studio workers, they stated to have, while working as Blizzard North, worked on Diablo, Diablo II, Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, and an unnanounced project. Well... Damn.
[Blizzard]obviously will make a great game (because they're blizzard: Fiascos like starcraft Ghost don't hit shelves, and they don't announce games without potential), but it wont be the same flavor that D2 has. Going further into this; The Blizzard North team is what made the creation of the Diablo world possible. The Blizzard team is what made the starcraft and warcraft worlds possible. If blizzard were to have been shut down, Blizzard North would NOT be able to create new starcraft and warcraft games that struck the same calibur as the old ones. This rule is flippable = with the blizzard north team gone, blizzard cannot create a new diablo game that packs the same punch. My proof? the fact that Diablo 3 hasn't remotely been announced (I'm going to say eventually they will, but it still won't give the same diablo feel).
Blizzard has game ideas all the time, and see where they can take those ideas. After a small amount of exploration in their thoughts, they destroy shitty ideas. Which usually results to all of them being destroyed. This is why Blizzard Entertainment ended up with 3 Awesome Franchises and no crappy games. Blizzard is obviously trying to create a Diablo 3. They have been ever since Diablo 2: LoD came out. Its an obvious fact. Why stop a Billion Dollar Franchise? So why hasn't this company produced anything yet? Because they haven't been able to. They don't want to release some shitty half assed game, and thats what they have been creating (and scrapping over and over again). Blizzard North was the brain of the Diablo series, and without it, the Diablo series has come to a hault.
Great analogy's yes, HL is similiar but will never be the same, as it shouldn't.... and for people who say HL sucks... Thats their opinion let it be..... I'm not going to buy HL but I'll prob play it a lil at a friends house and if it's an amazing game I'll buy it, but I don't expect it to be as good any Diablo game..... Let time tell how good the game is.......

I also think this is at least partially correct. Yes blizzard has lost some of the great minds of D1 and D2 but this does not mean that Diablo 3 will not have the original diablo feel. This is the reason (also fun factor) why they are scrapping the projects, in my opinion.
Hopefully they can create a game as amazing as D1+D2 = D3

Like I said, why would Blizzard make Diabo an MMO? They didn't make WoS, why would they? People liked Starcraft the way it is. And so many people here say that WoD would be the worst possible thing... They must know about this site, it is named Diablo3 after all... They know it ould be stupid to release WoD, and yu know what? These are the people who made Warcraft, Starcraft etc. they aren't dumb.
I never said blizzard was dumb i said all u people that can not look past the gun facter are dumb. Now why did i even have to repeat my self
never fan of starcrasft or warcraft wonder why

After realizing that the Schaefer Brothers and Friends had a hit on their hands, Blizzard BOUGHT the small gaming company, and put Bill Roper as one of the heads of the Newly Founded Blizzard North.
Blizzard North had their hit, and created a smashing sequal with a fantastic followup. Then Blizzard North mysteriously got the shaft, and NO CHIEF OFFICERS OR DIRECTORS WENT BACK TO BLIZZARD. Blizzard only rehired some programmers and artists in such that they needed bulk, not idea builders.
So, in conlusion, Blizzard didn't lose some of the greatest minds that created D2. It lost them all.

Ok ill end all this conversation about Diablo vs Hellgate. But you MUST keep in mind this is the ALPHA! Nothing is final! The differences between the games will pretty much be the same tho.
First off I personally am in Hellgate London's alpha, and chose to play as The Guardian (Paladin), The BladeMaster (Barbarian), and The Marksmen (Amazon).
Hellgate London is like Diablo in some ways as in the alpha so far we have a child named Wart and he has lost his peg leg and you must find it (Leg also has the letters 2.0 imprinted on his leg, maybe wirts leg 2?). We have a man who tells you information and is around you throughout the game much like Cain is in Diablo. Hell is unleashing upon the earth much like in Diablo it is.
Difference is the gameplay tho, as it is it's pretty much Doom 3 in an MMO style, Melee users are shit. You can get to level like 7-9 and be alright but then if you don't grab a gun and shoot like a pussy and run you wont last 10 seconds. Im sure they will fix this but as is like I said in Alpha it's all about the guns.
This is like Diablo by the character refrences, the fact you are fighting Demons, The inventory system is an updated version of D2, The skill trees, The skills, and the fact of something that I feel makes Diablo stand above most games is the fact you can take more then 1 monster at once, but thats also a con in this as sometimes to many monsters pop up and you can't tell what's going on.
Its not like Diablo as, it plays like a Doom game but in an mmo style. You run into portals and you are the only person there unless you have a team (GuildWars influence) you can run around the streets breaking some environments, jump, dash skill they auto give you and if you die you can either opt to return to town, return as a ghost and find your body at no cost, or pay to be resurrected right away. Now the healing in the game is good if you like PVP and were tired of kids healing because they have a timer on the health potions, but if your fighting monsters it blows badly, youll find yourself dying faster then the health potions can deliver most times. There is no attack rating as is, you swing you hit, the quests are abnormally easy so far (Go kill 4 zombies). No pvp is implemented yet, and it might not be unless you pay. And the game is not around only the people that pay, hell the game in alpha mode is still fun enough to breath fresh air in your lungs from all the bad games out there now, if you pay yea you will get more content and it will be worth your money but you can have equally enough fun if you don't pay.
I rambled on to much but its all true factual information, either way Hellgate London is almost an updated version of Diablo 2 and one that I feel will be very successful but nowhere will it touch WoW or Diablo 3. If Diablo 3 was even hinted or teased about I am confident it would crush Hellgate Londons whole marketing, much like how Blizzard announced their "uber boss" patch for Diablo 2 right after GW came out? They arn't stupid they are gonna wait till their competition shoots first then they will fire.
The gameplay so far is fun, and beats 98% of the games out there right now I feel but id honestly rather play Diablo 2, and thats just fine with me. This game wasn't meant to be a Diablo clone and I don't feel it is, it steps in a new unique direction and even tho I hate the guns the fact they got the balls to do it and are willing to make it work is great.
So to the people that think this is Diablo 3 you will be sorely hurt when you play this and realize how wrong you are, and for the people who think this will kill Diablo 3 you are a moron, no game out there can kill Diablo 3, And to the people who are guessing wether to play it or not I would it beats most games out there and if you hate WoW you will love this as like I said its almost like Diablo in an mmo style but with guns which is kinda a turnoff.

I feel dumb
Did not know that.....that sucks.......kinda...
So your saying that everyone (the minds) who created D1 d2 went to flagship or only some? and also, If you don't PPM on HL can you have as good of items and skills as people who PPM?
they don't update their site too much and I'm too lazy to search for th information...

Sadly, after Blizzard North was shut down, only some of the minds went to Flagship. Most of the main headers are there, but as you can see, Hellgate London is very different from the diablo series. Since you can see the effect of loosing a few important visionaries through HGL, imagine what kind of losses are at hand with the new D3 working crew.
as for HGL
there will be no PPM only items, or PPM findable items. There will be areas, but I imagine those areas are basically the Pit of Acheron on Crack, Ancient Sewers, etc. All randomized as well. There is raid content, but its more along the lines of a long randomized 2 hour killing spree with a big bad at the end. chance to find loot (and of course a higher loot table) is the only thing that increases in these settings.
Diablo and HL are very different. If you think otherwise, you are very misinformed. HL: TPSRPG. Diablo: RPG. Diablo takes place in "old times." This is why i keep saying (blind leading the blind) first i'll repeat my self (seem like u guys just have blinders on and read what u want to)hgl is a mix of doom3/diablo but being more rgp (lvls, char stats, char skills, armorer, random item drops, weapon mods, socket items so on that all rpg. fps part is guns but do u need be very good at head shot no! like a zon u just aim at them.
for the people who think this will kill Diablo 3 you are a moron
Anyone who says Diablo 3 > HGL is a moron. Something that doesn't exist can't beat something that does. Unless you have something missing upstairs.
It is, of course, fine to speculate that D3 will be better than HGL. I always hope that will be the case; due to the circumstances of how it will be created, I have my doubts.
Well because only some of the headers left to flagship Blizz still has hope of creating a godlike game, fresh talent could replace the ones who left.(hopefully)
Hopefully for flagships sake, PPM doesn't split the game into 2 different groups of people, but only adds material to those who want to pay and doesn't completely leave behind the ones who don't.

i agree... this choice of PPM seems shaky
we'll have to see.
there is actually a lifetime subscription option right now, at least to some pre-order-ers, but i think they're toying with the idea of giving everyone the option to have a lifetime subscription for $120. At 10 a month this equates to a year of paying to play, and it gives flagship a nice amount of money for their first profit game.
FYI Flagship Studios has been operating since 2004, and has yet to make a single penny. Mythos, the 'D2 replica' top-view stop-and-cast fast paced game, is Flagship Studios' only other work, and once the beta is over, it will be released to the world for no charge at all, and cost nothing to play per month. They built this game to test their version of Battle.net (called Ping0) and its stability. They want to work out the bugs in their servers before HGL goes live.
As far as Ping0 Goes, they will be showcasing their servers and selling space to other games that want to ride Ping0's back for online gaming. Mythos and HGL will show how effective the servers can work, and so newer games will buy into serverspace from Ping0.
As you can see, Flagship studios is really banking on a win here =P
And EA is funding them, which means EA sees potential.
But then again, I don't hold EA too high in standards.

i have a question for u if d3 came out would u ppm? or would u like to have d3 like d2 lods with very little patch work done and dupes/cheat go unfix for month and ruin the game?

Yes, I read that. But mostly it's guns. In Diablo the array of weapons feature Mauls, swords, hammers, axes, bows, etc.
Thanks for the comment, it actually means a lot to me, I'm barely active here, but whenever I come on, I consider myself to "nail it."

man dude u know whats up! i been trying say that but i don't know all the name and stuff i just new schaefer brother were panters with guy came up with the ideal in school for diablo and as a team made diablo what is was a great game just like hgl will be!
AND NO MORE DUMBASS RAIDS FOR BEST LOOT WOOT SOLO PLAY IS BACK!
This is why i keep saying (blind leading the blind) first i'll repeat my self (seem like u guys just have blinders on and read what u want to)hgl is a mix of doom3/diablo but being more rgp (lvls, char stats, char skills, armorer, random item drops, weapon mods, socket items so on that all rpg. fps part is guns but do u need be very good at head shot no! like a zon u just aim at them.
