Just a random thought I had, well it’s not so much a thought but rather a question I have been pondering as of late. What would the world be like without the lord of the Rings (/The Hobbit)?
Think about everything LOTR has given us.
-Dungeons and Dragons, without LOTR, DND wouldn’t exist -Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights without DND, they wouldn’t exist
-Kingdom under Fire without DND, it wouldnt exist
-Legend of Zelda: Role Playing Game with DND this wouldnt exist. -Warhammer it wouldn’t exist without DND -Warcraft without exist if it wasn’t Warhammer and of course the falling out between Games Workshop (who make Warhammer) and Blizzard, Blizzard at the time under a different name Silicon & Synapse, decided to go in a different direction with the game, and what they had done on it so far, and thus Warcraft and Blizzard Entertainment were born. And if Blizzard didn’t exist as they do today, they wouldn’t have acquired the game development company Condor (later renamed Blizzard North) who were working on Diablo, and thus the reason we are here the inevitable third installment. ok so Diablo was going to happen regardless, but probably not in the same form it is we know it.
-Starcraft if Blizzard didnt decide to do their own thing when making warcraft, Starcraft might not have existed today -Music, if it wasn’t for LOTR we wouldnt have such great songs like Stairway to Heaven, The Battle of Evermore, Ramble On, Misty Mountain Hop, Over the Hills and Far Away by Led Zeppelin and if there is no Stairway to Heaven, tenacious D cannot make a tribute song to it.
man my life would be boring without these things.
And I suppose you could say the LOTR movies pretty much introduced the world ot Orlando Bloom, so chicks who dig him can thank JRR tolkien for that one, while I sure we would have seen him in something but the LOTR movies definitely made him known.
Now I know I tend to ramble on, And now's the time, the time is now To sing my song…..
But it is something to think about.
[lol basically i just said if it wasnt for LOTR i wouldnt be able to make this thread]

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
but without LOTR would there have be a Silmarillion?

a world without LOTR is a world without life. those books have inspired millions of people, they have been the base of thousands more creations, diablo and warcraft being some of those. after all, orcs, elves, and dwarves were popularized by LOTR if not created, and all three of those make the basis of warcraft. not to mention the books and games that are fantasy of the times of swords and bows, of dragons and magic. Tolkien was a genious, and did more for this world than he is given credit for. its like edison, he made the lightbulb and is partially given credit for the technological revolution that came after the inspiring things he invented.
I wouldn't put Kingdom under Fire as a worthy accomplishemt in the wake of LotR, but otehr than that then yes, what would have happened without it? Porbably we would all have been playing Final Fantasy and Pokemon
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

Don't get too high expectations, I tried it one year ago, it isn't that fun to stare on a small screen and only being able to walk in four directions.
Besides, all of them became crap after Red, Blue and Yellow. There we had some good-looking monsters at least, then it just became strange strange things.

sure, Silmarillion was the earliest book Tolkien started to write and never finished. LotR was way easier and more straightforward. Oh, Silmarillion describes the first ages of Middle-Earth and Valinor. LotR on the other hand only the last years of the 3rd Age.
right its been so long since i last read Silmarillion, i forgot when it was set.
prehaps this thread should have been a world without the Hobbit as it is a prequel to LOTR, or better yet, a world without the writings of JRR Tolkein.

well Kingdom Under fire: the Crusaders was pretty good, havent played KUF: Heroes yet.
they do have the same creatures as DND which has the same creatures as LOTR that was my point.

KUF: Heroes has the same gameplay with more campaigns and more independency. More heroes like Rupert and Ellen are leaders of campaigns and you play the vamps and orcs as well.

Those before me shall quiver in my wake as I unleash the fury within!
there would be diablo but not as we know it today, Blizzard acquired Condor which was already 6 months into making Diablo. They renamed Condor Blizzard North.
and LOZ, dont recall that having much to do with LOTR, LOZ came from Miyamoto wandering around in the woods out the back of his house as a child
the LOZ role playing game is a combination of LOZ and DND, but like i said earlier without LOTR DND and thus this game wouldnt exist

o i c, cleared that one up for me, then i guess i would b fine if it didnt exist although alot of the games u did mention i still like and would suck to not hav
my point exactly. no LOTR and so many games we all play, songs we all listen to, movies we have all seen, dont exist.

there are same games like Legend of Zelda that i think has little to no influence from LOTR, so we would have been playing these instead.

Yeah, but Tolkien itself is also only a branch in the tree. He borrowed heavily from Norse and other mythologies, grammar from Welch and Finnish, among other things.

true, but to think of all the things that have in some way been influenced or inspired by his works, and a world in which they didnt exist.

does anyone know where elves and dwarves originated? im pretty sure they're from LOTR, but im not too sure. or maybe they just became popular through LOTR??
-EDIT-
elves are from german mythology, and dwarves are from norse mythology. both however were poularized by tolkien, and we still use his grammarizing when refering to elves and dwarves. (original spellings were elfs and dwarfs.)
