Well.. yeah, the moon doesn't make sence. But the mooncycle would definately make sence. The length of the months are derived from the mooncycle (which is why they're called months, the word sounds a bit like moon, see? Well in Dutch it's clearer: maan = moon / maanden = months). The mooncycle is how much of the moon you can see due to the earth blocking the suns rays from shining on parts of the moon, once a month there's a full moon when the earth isn't in the way. Dunno how it works with eclipses, though..
