Evil has to return for our entertainment and evil has to return to be slain by us and lastly evil has to return to face the mighty power of SICK.

It's so funny that this community feels Diablo 2 LoD had an open ending. I do as well but every single real life former D2 addictee I talk to or just on members on different forums, all feel D is completely done through and through and I'm a fool for thinking otherwise in their opinions.
entities as Diablo, Mephisto and Baal couldnt be destroyed, at least not in the world of Sanctuary. When their mortal bodies, their "anchors" were defeated their spirits simply left their bodies till they had enough strength to anchor themselves again to someone else. Unless trapped in a Soulstone. Soulstones they managed to corrupt with Izuals help (according to the game) and use some of their powers. With the destruction of the Worldstone, the source of all Soulstones, the ending was left wide open by what Tyrael said. "I do not know how the destruction of the Worldstone will affect the world". How more open could they leave it?
I havent read any of the books of Knaak though to see what he did with the lore.

I've long held that LoD's ending is not as open-ended as many think it is. It was always my impression that with the destruction of the Worldstone, Heaven and Hell would no longer be able to enter the realm of Sanctuary.

while that is possible there is still the matter of Belial and Azmodan. we should get to fight them we fought all the others of the seven great evils.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
Maybe. I'm just not sure they're that essential to the storyline in any way. But who knows, really. Personally I would love to fight them, or at least have them play a significant role in the next Diablo game. But my money is still kind of riding on a prequel game.
Belial and Azmodan were responible for banishing the three to the mortal realm and they still control a vast amount of Hell's army.
they seem more sotryline related that Andariel and Duriel, yet we got to fight those two.
but yeh prequel seems logical, set in the sin war/capture and binding of the three.

I don't think they're more significant than Andariel and Duriel. The four Lesser Evils together overthrew the Prime Evils. So in that sense, they're all equally as important. When Andariel and Duriel are slain, I reckon they just go back to Hell, whereas the Prime Evils are banished into the Great Abyss. So with the return of the other two Lesser Evils, once again the four of them remain in Hell; possibly more powerful now that they Prime Evils can no longer marginilize them.

I've come to enjoy telling people the next game will probably be a prequel. Since I think the Sin War is a fascinating time period, yet at the same time prequels piss people off so it makes me laugh.
ive seen the name of tyreal pop up a lot in here, but so far i havent found the name hadriel once (havent looked at all posts, so might be mistaken).
But im more afraid of hadriel then tyreal. At the time when youve gotten through almost everything in the classic version, and approach the waypoint of river, Hadriel is waiting for you to give you instructions on how to defeat Diablo himself.
Someone with this knowledge can never be a good person, especially no angel.
Tyreal is just an angel that requires the help of a mortal to defeat the prime evils.
Though Hadriels somehow seems to be more interested in taking out all the demons. It could be me, but i think he is trying to take over, but he was still watching your progress.
This story kinda sounds like dungeon siege2, where a strange mentor is aiding you throughout the battle, and when you finally meet the "bad guy", you find out that you were just a puppet to your mentors command.
If maybe Hadriel had appeared more than once in the game then I'd give more credence to your theory. And I'll even admit that I always thought his sudden appearance there to tell you about the five seals, or to turn back and destroy Mephisto's Soulstone always was kind of strange to me. But I honestly feel today like he was just a last minute NPC they decided to throw in there.
It is also my theory that Tyrael would've been completely aware of Hadriel's presence. Maybe Tyrael even posted Hadriel there to advise you at the last minute in case you weren't able to make it back somehow to the Pandemonium Fortress. And one reason I believe Hadriel is subservient to Tyrael is because his wingspan is not as long as Tyrael's. And I kind of think that wingspan has something to do with rank or level of power as far as archangels are concerned.
yes they are dead physically, but not their essence, it went back to the abyss. (this is what smashing a soulstone does)

well considering that the worldstones were destroyed as weel as 2 lesser demons, 2 lessers remain who in which may have the poiwer to revive the demons yet, you think about it. I think tyrael will turn bad because the balance between good and evil was destroyed changing everything. but thats my prediction

What you do judges the decision of going to heaven or hell...Im going to hell so i could pwn uber diablo!:D
It was left WIDE open and i like it a lot (because it was very clear the ending of D2 without having that "wtf? over already" feeling, plus the cinematics are always a treat)
I don't know about wide open. But certainly open. However, I really think after LoD's ending, the Prime Evils will never return to Sanctuary.
for diablo, well, it definately did not end in diablo II
espeically since theres going to BE a diablo 3...
i hate my false hope
ITS GOING TO HAPPEN!!! we will all rejoice!
